On paper, Jennifer Lopez’s new movie/musical/thing This Is Me…Now: A Love Story makes a fair bit of sense: It’s sort of an artistic retelling of the basic story beats of her life, set to Jennifer Lopez music, co-written by Jennifer Lopez, and featuring every single famous friend she has on her contacts list. But that still might not help you understand anything that’s happening in this trailer for the Prime Video musical spectacular.

The whole thing seems like over-the-top music video fantasy sequences, with very green screen-y backgrounds (finally, a spiritual sequel to Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow), but then it’s intercut with stuff that seems to take place in the real world, but then everyone starts dancing, but then Jennifer Lopez’s heart appears as a giant steampunk machine, and then it cuts to some serious-seeming relationship drama with an endless line of different male suitors, and then we’re flying through space with Neil deGrasse Tyson narrating it, then she’s doing Singin’ In The Rain, then she’s unionizing the women who work on the heart machine through dance.

This Is Me…Now: A Love Story – Official Trailer | Prime Video

The official synopsis calls it a “narrative-driven cinematic odyssey” from director Dave Meyers (a music video director) that will also drop alongside Lopez’s first new album in years. A press release from Prime Video also blurs the line on whether this is meant to be a reflection of her real life, saying it’s a “personal journey to love and the importance of self-live.” Does it even have to have any connection to her life in order to be a “personal journey” anyway? When and how will Ben Affleck appear in this?

This Is Me…Now: A Love Story will be available on Prime Video on February 16.

Damn and here I thought they were doing a sequel to the Bob’s Burgers movie already…

She looks like a head in a jar on Futurama.

That’s just what the real world is like when you’re Jennifer Lopez. Which is why Ben Affleck is moonlighting at the DD drive thru.

This doesn’t sound very compelling at all, but thanks for the reminder about Sky Captain. I’ve been meaning to go back and watch that again. I was pretty high the first time I saw it and loved it. I remember it as the best modern version of Commander Cody and Flash Gordon serials that I loved as a kid.

The giant steampunk heart looks like the clock from Alice in Wonderland 2: Whatever It Was CalledThen there’s the motorcycles (gliding?) on water, like they’re in The MatrixThe song and dance in the factory, aka the white person version of No Bad News + Brand New Day from The WizThe horrible “overly-beautiful” cityscape shots that look like a Spielberg version of a Thomas Kinkade painting.
… and none of that mashed together seemed any weirding or more outlandish than “my heart never sleeps.” I don’t know if this movie with be the next Citizen Kane or the next The Room, but it is destined for GREATNESS.

    1. This is more confusing than “Tenet”. 2. Now we know why Ben always looks so miserable.
