The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame announced this year’s inductees, and some great names are getting the honor this year. As revealed on Today, the honorees are Tina Turner, The Go-Go’s, Carole King, Jay-Z, Todd Rundgren, and Foo Fighters. So yes, that means that Dave Grohl has been inducted twice in less than a decade. (Nirvana was inducted in 2014.) King and Turner are also two-time inductees, since King had previously been included in a non-performer category for songwriting and Turner was inducted in 1991 under Ike & Tina Turner.

Rundgren’s induction comes after the “Hello, It’s Me” singer said earlier this year that he doesn’t consider the Hall Of Fame to be of any importance. “It’s no secret that I don’t care about it. It doesn’t matter how many times they nominate me. It’s not gonna make me care,” he said earlier this year. He also referred to the fan vote to get nominated as a “scam.” “Most fans don’t realize that their votes count for absolutely nothing. The first time I got nominated all my fans, who all these years have been like, ‘Geez, you’ve got to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!,’ they all stepped up and bumped me up to No. 3 in the fan pool — by a pretty wide margin. And then when the actual inductees were 1, 2, 4, 5, 6…they essentially hosed my fans. So that made me angry, and I had to tell them that it was pointless casting votes, ‘cause it really doesn’t count for anything.,” he added. And now that’s finally being inducted, Rundgren continues not to care. He hasn’t even posted about it on social media.

This needs to be rebranded as the Music Hall of Fame, because JayZ is not rock and roll.

  • bs-leblanc-av says:

Wait, hold up. You mean to tell me Tina Turner is not already in the HoF as solo artist?

    • nycpaul-av says:

      Isn’t that nuts?

    • roadshell-av says:

She’s in as part of “Ike and Tina Turner,” which I think most voters thought was enough.  A lot of that 80s solo stuff was kind of over-produced and didn’t fit too great into pre-poptimist critical taste.

  • mwfuller-av says:

Dave Grohl is the most boring person ever.  Why not induct Sky Saxon and The Seeds?  Jethro Tull?  Or those dorks from DEVO?  Aw, heck!

  • magpie187-av says:

Foo Fighters & Jay-Z deserve it eventually but not ahead of ahead of Motorhead, Pat Benatar, Motley Crue, and Iron Maiden. Nice to see Go-Gos finally get in.

    • kirivinokurjr-av says:

Can you educate me on Motley Crue? I feel like they were huge in the late ‘80s with Dr. Feelgood, but I’m not clear on why I would consider them notches above Cinderella, Skid Row, or Warrant.

      • magpie187-av says:

They have sold over 100 mil albums globally & were one of the biggest bands of the 80s. Without them the bands you mentioned would not exist.

      • toddisok-av says:

Educate you about Motley Crue? The singer killed and maimed some people driving drunk, the guitar player’s skeleton is turning into cement, the bass player killed himself with dope then wrote a pretty cool song about it, the drummer has an impressively large penis as well as every hepatitis known to man and…John Corabi.

      • garrisondeanog-av says:

I love metal. I even love 80s metal. I have never understood Motley Crue. It’s a real problem with me and some friends of mine.

    • MannyBones-av says:

I actually saw Foo Fighters on their tour with Motorhead. Only most of Motorhead got stuck somewhere because of a tornado or something. But, instead of just playing their set and ending early, Foo Fighters played a full double set. It was pretty awesome.

      • toddisok-av says:

Dave Grohl seems like the nicest guy-who-looks-like-a-homeless-child-molester.

        • jab66-av says:

Who seems to be incapable of getting a good tattoo. It’s like he says to his tour manager, “When we get to the worst town on the tour, find me the crappiest tattoo studio there, find the least-talented artist, and tell him I want the dumbest design he’s ever thought of. Oh, and it has to be huge.”

    • kev55555-av says:

You can argue Foo Fighters but I think Jay Z absolutely deserves it first chance

    • kremple-av says:

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been a joke since it’s inception really

    • kinggojira-av says:

Maiden not getting in is some kind of BS honestly.

    • torchbearer2-av says:

I would imagine the lower weight of public voting has something to do with it. I am surprised that some of those names aren’t already in though. I actually had to look them up just to see that they weren’t.

    • garrisondeanog-av says:

Maiden not getting it is both tragic, and expected. Iron Maiden is able to fill stadiums around the globe for almost 40 years and yet still is considered a niche band.

  • surprise-surprise-av says:

Turner was inducted in 1991 under Ike & Tina Turner.
So she had to spend three decades sharing a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with her piece of shit abusive ex-husband when she’s been eligible to be there on her own for over a decade?

    • roadshell-av says:

It’s not like she literally needed to be in the same room with him…

      • surprise-surprise-av says:

No shit. But you don’t see why it’s gross that she has to share a spot with someone who abused her? She’s been pretty open about the fact that she doesn’t even like to perform a lot of the songs she recorded with Ike because it triggers PTSD.
And just going through the years on their website, the number of inductees varies every year, so it’s not like spots are finite and they’ve had many, many, many double inductees. No one ever thought, “Maybe we shouldn’t have one of the most beloved performers of the later 20th Century sharing a spot with the man who famously made her life a living hell to the point she tried to take her own life?” And to top it all off, someone just pointed out they were inducted by Phil Spector. After the publication of Turner’s memoirs where she first really opened up about Ike’s abuse, Spector went on a media tour defending Ike.

    • pearlnyx-av says:

Neither she, nor Ike attended. Phil Spector accepted it for them.

      • surprise-surprise-av says:

I didn’t mean the induction ceremony. I meant just in general that, up until now, her spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was something she has to share jointly with Ike despite the fact that the years of abuse are so well known and most of the public knows Tina Turner for her solo work at this point now. Although that it is really gross since Spector went on a media blitz publicly defending Ike Turner from the time Tina Turner published her memoirs to the release of the What’s Love Got to Do with It? film.

        • lectroid-av says:

Maybe she realized that The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is an ‘honor’ right up there with being selected for one of those “Who’s Who of High School Students Class of 1986″ books. Which is to say, pointless and of exactly zero consequence. She lives abroad, having gotten sick and tired of the racism and sexism of the US. She’s retired from performing. She has a lifetime of both trauma and accomplishment to reflect on and is, presumably, surrounded by folks she loves and love her back. Who gives a fuck what a bunch of douchebags in Cleveland think? Who even DECIDES who’s inducted? Record execs? Anyone who can vote in the Grammy’s, but not if you’re in the Jazz or Classical categories? Turner and Rundrgen both have the right attitude to this stupid, stupid institution. It deserves your complete and undying apathy. (I will admit, occasionally the celebratory jams produce fun. Prince on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, Foo Fighters doing a Rush Tribute. Geddy Lee replacing Chris Squire on Roundabout and looking like a 12 year old getting to pitch for his favorite ball team. But that’s three I can think of off hand that stand out, out of what, 25+ years of performances?)

        • jmyoung123-av says:

The Ike years are her best and most influential work.

  • peon21-av says:

If Foo Fighters can back Tina Turner for “Proud Mary”, I can die happy.

    • kirivinokurjr-av says:

What if Mel Gibson inducts her into the HoF?

      • toddisok-av says:

What’s the problem, she’s not Jewish?

        • belgiansexwaffle-av says:

True, but she’s black, and he did wish for the mother of his child to get “raped by a pack of ….” …. well, you know. I don’t think he has a very high opinion of black people, either.

      • digitalviking-av says:

Only if she calls him Raggedy Man.

    • MannyBones-av says:

I think it would be harder to prevent them doing that than convincing them.

    • cheboludo-av says:

I just learned that The Foo Fighters semi-regularly back up Rick Astley when they are in town together. Never Gonna Give You Up! Never Gonna Let You Down!

  • mamakinj-av says:

Rundgren’s induction comes after the “Hello, It’s Me” singer said earlier this year that he doesn’t consider the Hall Of Fame to be of any importance.Rundgren is a lot more than just Hello, It’s me.He also had a great producing career, including a little record called Bat out of Hell which has sold over 50 million records worldwide and still sells 200K a year, some 44 years after its release.

  • dollymix-av says:

Maybe Todd Rundgren and Jay-Z can play something from Rundgren’s ridiculous electronica-rap album No World Order.

  • thebtskink2-av says:

Happy that Tina and Carole got in. Hope Iron Maiden makes it in before one of the current lineup dies.

    • kinggojira-av says:

Maiden deserves it but I highly doubt the band gives a crap about awards or being in the rock n roll hall of fame.

      • thebtskink2-av says:

Very true. Was hoping for a fun performance at least, but I’ll just content myself with watching them every time they come around for a concert until they give up or croak.

        • kinggojira-av says:

Yeah Id rather see them live n their own element instead of doing a stage show for a hall of fame spot. Last time they did a stage show they swapped instruments during the song.

  • nycpaul-av says:

My favorite Todd Rundgren story is actually an Iggy Pop story. Iggy was hitting on Rudngren’s girlfriend some time in the mid-70’s when Rundgren was out on tour. Iggy made her drain her waterbed and put in new water before he would sleep with her because that was Rundgren’s water. (I’m pretty sure she was under-age, too, which means both of them could have gone to jail, but didn’t. But get in line for that one when it comes to rock stars in the 70’s. I’m not making light of it. It’s just a fact.)

  • ruefulcountenance-av says:

    The Go-Go’s, splendid!

  • spikop-av says:

    (i) How was’nt Tina in on her own ALREADY?(ii) Thankfully for the Go-Go’s, but did the HoF really have to be shamed into nominating them for the FIRST time this year, only AFTER the Go-Go’s doc came out??(iii) Jay-Z on his first nom, but not LL???

  • asherdan-av says:

Such beautiful mutants, may they all dance the poot to the thunderous spud-boy acclaim. We must repeat!

  • daveemrich519-av says:

Cannot believe that Iron Maiden and Rage Against the Machine were missed on this.

  • jodyjm13-av says:

And now that’s finally being inducted, Rundgren continues not to care. He hasn’t even posted about it on social media.Props to him for sticking to his guns (so far, at least). Of course, since it’s taken the Hall this long to induct Tina Turner as a solo artist, I’m tempted to side with Rundgren. Imagine if the Baseball Hall of Fame had asked Bob Gibson to just chill for a decade before letting him in.

  • froot-loop-av says:

I sincerely believe they just choose their lists of nominees based on who will make people the angriest so it gets talked about. It’s the only explanation for a why it’s such a pile of garbage every year.

  • toddisok-av says:

Does Todd Rundgren have any other tone of voice than “detached arrogance”?

  • brianfowler713-av says:

    Where’s Weird Al?

    • toddisok-av says:

      Over there —>

    • hamologist-av says:

Al isn’t even in the Polka Hall of Fame. Total madness.

    • msanxiety-av says:

He really deserves it but I doubt he’ll ever get it which is a shame. Sure the man does glorified cover/parody music but his original stuff is banging too plus he is a chameleon, no one can do what he does with the same sense of style and respect.

Plus anyone who has seen him live knows the man can put on a show like no other he is a performer and he brings it.

    • jdonnaught-av says:

He made a wrong turn at Albuqueque.

  • dripad-av says:

Yeah, after my favorite band, Roxy Music, got in after 20+ years in the waiting, I gave up giving a shit. Jann Weiner lost his rebellious touch and doesn’t know his rock anymore. He is a corporate schill. Fuck him and the whole RRHOF selection committee.

    • toddisok-av says:

Your favorite band is Roxy Music?

      • wabznazm-av says:

America needs to deal with Roxy Music. That is a serious fucking catalogue.

      • jzeiss-av says:

Is there a problem with that?

      • dripad-av says:

Love’em. Creative as hell. Especially their first 5 albums. Don’t judge them on Avalon alone. And Bryan Ferry is one of the few lead singers in rock who acts his age and has aged gracefully. Wish most people had as much class as him.

    • digitalviking-av says:

When Joni Mitchell was rated a better guitarist than Zakk Wylde, that’s when I was done.

  • gabrielstrasburg-av says:

They should change the name. It hasn’t been a Rock n Roll hall of fame for a long time. Jay Z is great, but he does not make rock n roll music.

  • jab66-av says:

I love Dave Grohl, I really do. He’s an absolute tornado of positivity and good, both for rock and roll and humanity as a whole. He’s great. That said, the Foo Fighters do not belong in the RRHoF. Not now, not ever. They are a Velveeta and mayonnaise on Wonder Bread sandwich of tedious mediocrity. They have contributed nothing to the rock and roll landscape other than album after album of safe, uninspired McRock radio fodder. It’s music well performed enthusiastically by talented musicians, but it’s staggeringly unremarkable. There are still dozens of groundbreaking, daring, singularly talented artists who aren’t in. The Foo Fighters are not among them.

    • lapchick-the-mad-hungarian-av says:

Well said. Damn well said. Take your star.

    • timchester606-av says:

Say what you want about their last 10 years preforming, but The Colour and the Shape is hands-down one of the best rock albums of the 90s, and few singles of that decade can rival Everlong in terms of how well they hold up.
Also, saying they contributed nothing to the rock and roll landscape is a laugh. They might not be the most popular musical act out there in 2021, but don’t forget that they absolutely dominated the rock charts throughout the 2000s. Remember, this was a decade where emo, nu metal, folk, etc took over the radio waves. To have the impact they did without straying into these areas is pretty impressive.
I’ll agree with you somewhat on your last paragraph though. I’m as big of a Foo fan as they come, but they should not have been inducted this year. I think the remaining grunge acts of the 90s deserve to get in before them (Soundgarden, in particular), but they definitely still deserve to get in.Final note: I’ll make the daring assumption that you haven’t gotten around to listening to their non-singles. If I’m right, please take a listen. There’s some fantastic non-single tracks of theirs (except Burn Away … that’s hot garbage). If I’m wrong, ignore this final note.

      • jab66-av says:

Say what you want about their last 10 years preforming, but The Colour and the Shape is hands-down one of the best rock albums of the 90s.But it’s not. It’s not even close. Unless it’s a list of 6,000 albums. Few singles of that decade can rival Everlong in terms of how well they hold up. Many many, many singles from the ‘90s can not only rival but far surpass it. Several by Grohl’s former band, for instance. Also, saying they contributed nothing to the rock and roll landscape is a laugh. It is if you think the truth is hilarious.Don’t forget that they absolutely dominated the rock charts throughout the 2000s. Remember, this was a decade where emo, nu metal, folk, etc took over the radio waves. Exactly. That’s like saying don’t forget that they could bench press more than anyone else on the debate team. I’ll agree with you somewhat on your last paragraph though. Good. You should agree with me on the others as well.Look, again, Grohl is a treasure. He has a really good band that performs fun, energetic, generous concerts, brings on great guest stars, and honors local alt/punk legends by performing their songs, sometimes even with the original band members, They’re the best. But their material is the worst.

        • timchester606-av says:

It’s funny how your only debate-worthy statements are comparing them to Nirvana (we should move on from that as a society, honestly) and the positive things you say about Dave, and then the rest of your comments are hot salty garbage with no argument to back them up. Thanks for the chuckle though, it’ll be nice to vaguely recall this interaction when I watch them get inducted in October.

          • jab66-av says:

Um… you seem to be missing the point. The reason there’s no “argument” to back up my hot salty garbage (which is the most delicious garbage, btw) is because there’s nothing to argue — the Foo Fighters career output is the argument. And the reason I brought up “only” Nirvana isn’t because it’s the only example I could find, it’s because it’s somewhat ironic that among the scores of albums and singles that overshadowed anything the Foo Fighters ever did, Grohl even bested himself. I mean, if you really want an analytical breakdown of the relative merits of the Foo Fighters vs. the entire output of the past two decades, how long do you have? Do want 100 albums? 500? 1,000? Particularly in the ‘90s, the Foo Fighters aren’t even also-rans. Forgetting about Nirvana (who I’m personally not a huge fan of, but I can’t deny their influence) and grunge, you’re talking about the most influential decade ever for hip-hop, which is now the predominate popular music worldwide, and a decade-defining run by The Beastie Boys, an absolutely definitive decade for women, with remarkable output from PJ Harvey, Fiona Apple, Liz Phair, Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, and many others, the entire Britpop scene, the rise of EDM, the Riot Grrrl scene, Pavement more-or-less redefining the alt scene, the resurgence of punk, a strong power pop scene, the rise of alt country, and absolute domination by Prince, Madonna, Metallica. Should I go on? Do I need to go on?So smirk all you want, but know that the Foo Fighters are being inducted for one reason: because their safe, pleasant, predictable, utterly ignorable music is basically the only thing keeping a wheezing, dying FM rock radio industry alive. They create consistently profitable product and make the right people lots of money, and those people are saying thanks. So if they’re inducted by Bon Jovi, don’t be too surprised — same band, different decade.

    • belgiansexwaffle-av says:

Everything after the first two albums, I agree. But, those first two are still bangers.

  • bagman818-av says:

Maybe just call it the “Music Hall of Fame” or something rather than just ignoring the rock and roll bit?

  • 123456abcefg-av says:

So when will this just be renamed the Music Hall of Fame? Jay Z and Tina are great but neither have a place in a Hall of Fame for Rock and Roll.

  • knukulele-av says:

Hello It’s Me is arguably Rundgren’s worst song. He’s got far better stuff, especially with Utopia. And if you pick up any handful of rock albums from the 70’s, he’s likely to be on at least some of them as either a musician or producer. Todd is Godd.

    • kinjascrewedupmyaccount-av says:

The XTC album Skylarking owes its brilliance to Rundgren, despite the fights between him and Andy Partridge, both of them being control freaks. Partridge later said that it was “one bunker and two Hitlers”.

  • burnout1228121-av says:

Great to see women getting inducted multiple times! Tina Turner and Carole King has been long overdue as solo artists! And “YAY” for the Go-Go’s!

  • sh90706-av says:

Todd Rundgren is correct though. Fan votes barely count for anything. And JayZ…. while very talented, is hardly Rock and Roll.

  • quizamajig-av says:

Until Weird Al makes it in, the Hall is just a sham.

  • frycook-on-venus-av says:

Warren Zevon is fucked over once again.

He’s too damn good for the thing anyway.

  • opioiduser-av says:

Why Tina Turner again?  Ike Turner should have never been included to begin with.  I saw Ms Turner way back in the 80’s before her resurgence.  Damn she was sumthin’.

  • wabznazm-av says:

I’d love to say that the local organization in Cleveland didn’t explode with ignorant racist comments when they suggested Fela Kuti for induction. I’d love to say that.

  • schmilco-av says:

I wonder how many years it will be before the entire new class is made up of artists who were never considered rock musicians. Back when they created this museum, I don’t think they expected rock to fade from mainstream culture so quickly.
