Tom Brady, star and subject of the upcoming film 80 For Brady, has retired from professional football (again). The news comes exactly one year to the day from the last time the famed quarterback attempted to retire. He reversed that decision after 40 days to play what would be his last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This time, he promises that the retirement will be “for good.”

The athlete shared his decision in a video posted to social media. “Good morning, guys, I’ll get to the point right away: I’m retiring for good,” he said in the clip. “I know the process was a pretty big deal last time, so when I woke up this morning I figured I’d just press record and let you guys know first. So I won’t be long-winded. I think you only get one super emotional retirement essay, and I used mine up last year. So, really, thank you guys, so much, to every single one of you, for supporting me. My family, my friends, teammates, my competitors, I could go on forever, there’s too many. Thank you, guys, for letting me live my absolute dream. I wouldn’t change a thing. Love you all.”

Brady says he wouldn’t change a thing, but one imagines that he probably un-retired in the first place in order to play one last Super Bowl. (He said, at the time of un-retirement, that he had “unfinished business” on the field.) Instead, this year’s Big Game will be a face-off between the Philadelphia Eagles (a team Brady faced twice in the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots, with one win and one loss) and the Kansas City Chiefs (a team Brady defeated with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in his last-ever Super Bowl ).

Like it or not (and many do not), Brady says goodbye to football (again) as the greatest player in the history of the National Football League. With seven wins, he has the most Super Bowl rings of any player, ever. Per a release from the Buccaneers, he’s the league’s all-time leader in wins (251), Pro Bowls (15), Super Bowl MVP Awards (5), completions (7,753), attempts (12,050), passing yards (89,214) and passing touchdowns (649).

Now, Brady will have time to really focus on his Hollywood career, beginning with 80 For Brady starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sally Field and Rita Moreno (out in theaters this Friday, February 3!). He will soon film his Netflix roast for Greatest Roasts Of All Time (for which he is also a producer). And according to a previous Variety report, he is poised to join Fox Sports as a football analyst.

I guess credit is due for getting through a whole Brady-retirement post without mentioning speculation that his un-retirement led to his fractured marriage.

It would be amusing if he tries to get back together with Gisele because he knows he fucked up.

It will never cease to amuse me that he gave up a 13 year marriage to a super model with more money than he has so that he could go 8 – 9 and get blown out in a first round playoff game. 19 years in the league, 3 MVPs, 7 championships, and it wasn’t enough to keep him from trading his family for one more mediocre season.

I question which is cause and which is effect here. Did the marriage fail because he went back to football, or did he go back to football because it was clear that the marriage had failed?

The latter seems more likely, but the former is a lot more entertaining to speculate on.

It was widely reported that when he started getting antsy and contemplating unretiring, Giselle told him if he went back to football she would leave him.But nobody really knows since neither he nor his wife have confirmed anything  but it isn’t really their responsibility to keep us informed of these things so all we have is speculation, really.

This. Tom Brady is a weirdo and I highly doubt that everything was *perfect* between them for 13 years (!) and then him wanting to give it one more go this past year caused Gisele to suddenly flip out and demand a divorce. Instead, I suspect they have had deep problems for a long time (I have written on other articles about this that I suspect Brady is just a dull person and that gets old fast, amongst other things) and this was just another in a litany of things that were not working between them.

        • planehugger1-av says:

I think the answer is probably some combination of “both” and “neither.” People’s reasons for getting divorced are often complicated, and I doubt it came down just to “football” — we just tend to assume it did because that’s the part we can see.

I think there’s a bit of a chicken-and-egg thing when it comes to Brady’s divorce and his decision to un-retire.  Their marriage had apparently been strained for some time.  It could be true both that Brady’s decision to play this year was the straw that broke the camel’s back in his marriage AND that Brady chose to un-retire because his marriage was on the rocks and he wanted something in his life that felt familiar and made him feel accomplished.
