After getting down and dirty in Netflix’s The Devil All The Time, Tom “Spidey” Holland will again flex his dramatic abilities outside of a green screen. Joining him are the Russo Brothers, the architects behind Infinity War and Endgame, who are also dialing down their big-bang aesthetic with Cherry, a sprawling addiction drama based on Nico Walker’s 2018 novel. We caught a teaser of the Apple TV+ original film over the weekend, but now a full trailer has arrived to show Holland’s striking transformation from doe-eyed schoolboy to PTSD-afflicted veteran to drug-addled criminal.

Co-director Joe Russo tells Entertainment Weekly the film represents Holland’s transformation “from a teen actor into an adult actor.” He adds that it was their personal proximity to the opioid epidemic, which he describes as an “existential blight that has gripped the Midwest,” that led them to pursue the project.

Watch the trailer below:

Ciara Bravo co-stars in the sweeping drama, which, across its six chapters, careens through events both absurd and tragic. Each chapter, according to the directors, was shot like “individual, miniature movies.”

“We like mixing incongruous ideas and seeing how they morph and surprise us,” said Anthony Russo. “That’s when things become really slippery, when you’re smashing together things that don’t normally fit together. And that’s exciting for us on a creative level.”

Cherry arrives in theaters on February 26 and will premiere digitally on Apple TV+ on March 12.

Anytime someone bitches about the MCU killing the movie industry remember that starring in, or director one, basically allows these film makers to write a check to do whatever they want after. Those get made so that shit like this can be made.

if anything this is as much a departure for the russos as winter soldier was, considering they were sitcom dudes who made middling shit like ‘welcome to mooseport’ before the mcu.

All it took was 10 years of mediocre effects-driven corniness for them to make one (1) cliche crime drama.

This trailer isn’t special, but I read and LOVED the book. Nico Walker was in prison for robbing 11 banks in Ohio, after he lost his mind due to war and drug addiction. He wrote the book from prison and was only released last year. I highly recommend… and I only picked it up because of an AV Club review back in 2018.

I enjoyed the book too! Not sure if I’m going to watch the movie but am curious to see what Walker writes in the future.

My only takeaway from this was that it sounds like My Chemical Romance in the background.

I thought “The Devil All the Time” was excellent (at least grading on a Netflix scale), and this looks quite good too. It’s interesting to see how the MCU cast expands their resume, but Holland definitely feels like he’s making some of the most interesting choices.

The poster on IMDb has the words “Best Picture” above the title. Apple wants to break it’s Oscar cherry with Cherry.

It’ll be nice to see Tom Holland in a film where he’s not constantly wondering “I hope I don’t let down Robert Downey Jr’s character.”
