Tower rebuilds

Aux Features Newswire

After the venerable superstore chain Tower came tumbling down last year, it seemed like one more nail in the coffin of brick-and-mortar music retail. But London company Caiman–which owns the remnants of the bankrupt Tower–plans on launching three new, redesigned Tower locations within the next nine months: in New York, L.A., and San Francisco.

Caiman hopes to succeed where so many other retailers have failed in the past few years by switching from one-stop distributors to dealing directly with indie distros and labels, and to entice shoppers away from their computers and into stores by carrying a large selection of vinyl and books. Caiman CEO Didier Pilon sums up his retail philosophy thusly: "We are best at selling one piece at a time, that's all we know how to do."
