Scrooge McDuck’s money-filled swimming pool is starting to get awfully filled, as Variety is reporting that Toy Story 4 has just become the fifth Disney movie this year to gross over $1 billion—breaking a record previously set by Disney itself back in 2016, when it had four movies cross the milestone. This continues what has been a pretty ridiculous year for the studio, with Disney previously breaking its own record for the highest box office total in a year back in July, with five months still left to go in 2019. This is on top of the fact that Frozen 2, the Maleficent sequel, and Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker are still on the horizon, all of which have a shot at breaking $1 billion and all of which will undoubtedly boost Disney’s box office returns even higher. Basically, the studio should soon have enough money to, for example, reanimate a frozen head and put it on top of a robot body.

The other four Disney movies that have crossed $1 billion this year are Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, Aladdin, and The Lion King. Toy Story 4, meanwhile, is the fourth Pixar movie ever to hit this milestone. If only the movies that Disney picked up from Fox would start carrying some of their weight, then it’d really be swimming in some cash.

“…the studio should soon have enough money to, for example, reanimate a frozen head and put it on top of a robot body.”You know where that’s going, right?

I don’t think his views would go over so well these days. Ok they’d go over great with about 30%+ of the population.

Like signing the Endangered Species Act and creating the EPA?Nixon would be derided as a vegan cuck by the MAGA crowd. OTOH, his racist “Southern strategy” would be warmly embraced by them, so maybe he’d make their heads explode

When did Walt Disney do that? Woooooosh.

Credit to the Democratric majorities in the Senate and Congress that helped twist his arm into doing it too, though.See, it’s as if winning control of these things was important as well!

I loved that in that episode they start be mentioning that Nixon opened trade relations with China, which is fairly laudable, and then spend the next twenty-odd minutes depicting him as an insane monster who wants to sell people’s kids for meat.

Does Spider-Man: Far From Home not count? It also hit a billion.

  • blood-and-chocolate-av says:

There is going to be a fifth one. I’m just sure of it. Might be another decade from now but there will definitely be a fifth.

Let me know when a Disney movie that isn’t a sequel or franchise title hits $1b.

    • IceBlue-av says:

Frozen wasn’t a sequel or a franchise title and it hit a billion. Same with Zootopia. Coco and Inside Out got pretty close too at over 800 million.

      • anjouvalentine-av says:

I knew that Frozen was an outlier, and I’m surprised that the completely-forgettable Zootopia crossed the mark.
Mostly referring to how Disney doesn’t seem to have anything original / promising in the works right now, just that“Frozen 2, the Maleficent sequel, and Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker are still on the horizon.”

Scheduled for a 2020 release by Disney & co. is Onward, Soul & based on the delightful tween book series by Eoin Colfer: Artemis Fowl. They’re also making a movie based on the namr of one of their rides: “Jungle Cruise”

Ok so anything more recent than shit that came out just short of a decade ago?

        • dikeithfowler-av says:

Um, Zootopia was 2016. And all kinds of lovely, too. I’m not a big fan of the Disney corporation, but it can’t be denied that sometimes they make great films.

I have yet to see any of the Disney animated films that came out after 2010, and I have kids!

          • dikeithfowler-av says:

I’ve seen most of them and I don’t have kids – but I do suffer from depression and sometimes they’re what I need when I’m in a low place.

I watch the first 7 minutes of Up or the last half hour of Toy Story 3 whenever i need the emotional release of a good cry. Unhealthy crying was probably me watching Toy story 4 and reacting to it like it was The fault in Our Stars.

          • mackattack23-av says:

You think Zootopia was a “great” movie?

          • dikeithfowler-av says:

I do. It’s sweet, warm hearted, funny, and has a great central message too.

          • jshie20-av says:

There’s a Tv series sequel in production apparently (Zootopia: The Series, also known as Zootopia: The Chronicles of Nick and Judy) similar to Tangled, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command & Aladdin.

        • dirtside-av says:

          Zootopia came out in 2016.

          • igotlickfootagain-av says:

Even Frozen came out in 2013, six years ago. Don’t know if I would call that “just short of a decade” rather than “just over five years ago”.

        • mark-t-man-av says:

Also, Zootopia came out in 2016.

Why does your type insist on moving the goal posts again and again?

    • modusoperandi0-av says:

The Mouse would answer you, but he can’t hear you over all the “ca-ching” sounds.

  • bcfred-av says:

Fucking Aladdin? Come on, people. Have some pride.

    • dreadpirateroberts-ayw-av says:

You know, I didn’t see it myself, but word of mouth on Aladdin has been surprisingly strong.

      • bcfred-av says:

I think it was a mistake for them to release that early footage of Smith’s face superimposed on a CGI blue body.  It made the product look like it was going to be really shoddy.

  • iambrett-av says:

More importantly as far as Disney is concerned, Toy Story 4 will shore up their revenues from merchandise and resorts. They have more than twice as much revenue from Parks and Resorts than they do from their movie division.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

You know, I think this plucky little Disney company is gonna be alright.
