A number of Astroworld attendees filed lawsuits against co-founder and headliner Travis Scott (and other people and groups involved) after the deadly crowd surge incident at the festival a few weeks ago, but now a significantly larger and more dramatic legal action is being taken. According to Rolling Stone, a new lawsuit has been filed against Scott, fellow performer Drake, organizer Live Nation, and Apple on behalf 282 plaintiffs “linked to the Astroworld tragedy,” and they’re looking for $2 billion in damages.

The Astroworld stampede recently claimed its ninth and 10th victims after two more people—one a nine-year-old child—died from the injuries they sustained at the event earlier this month. This lawsuit says that the organizers all stood to make an “exorbitant amount of money” off of Astroworld, and yet they “still chose to cut corners, cut costs, and put attendees at risk.” By asking for $2 billion in damages, the plaintiffs intend to “send the message to all performers, event organizers, and promoters that what happened at Astroworld cannot happen again.”

Apple getting named here is a relatively new wrinkle to all of this, with this suit accusing the company of compromising concertgoer safety through its “multimillion dollar purchase, promotion, and implementation of its exclusively online streaming rights” of Astroworld. The suit accuses Apple’s cameras, camera stands, and the metal barriers surrounding them of limiting the “means of exit” for a lot of people by splitting the venue “both horizontally and vertically.”

A second lawsuit representing 125 plaintiffs was filed earlier this week, asking for $750 million in damages. The lawyer in that case, Tony Buzbee, expects that the various suits will be “consolidated in a single courtroom in Houston” (where Astroworld was held), maybe “in the next 60 days.” That means there could be some movement on this relatively soon.

On on hand, I know there has to be a dollar value attached to this.
On the other hand, excuse me while I throw up.

Nah. Lawsuits like this are a boot on the neck of a greedy promotion machine that seems not to care about something as basic as the safety of their patrons. FUCK LIVE NATION

In a capitalist society, the only way to punish this sort of thing is with an ungodly large judgement.

In a capitalist society, all those sued will pass the buck when they have to settle lawsuits. All the products you buy from apple, live nation, etc will go up and we will pay. Just wanted to remind you.

I know and you’re not the only one here to tell me this.
Doesn’t change that this whole situation is both extremely sad and sickening.

However, these ‘ungodly large judgments’ are asked for routinely and virtually never given; the choice of such an astronomical figure probably means they’re actually looking for a settlement, and the billions are just there to scare the defendents into not calling their bluff just in case.
In particular, unless there’s some smoking gun that’s not been reported, it’s almost impossible that Apple would be found liable for substantial damages just for the act of recording the event. [indeed, dividing the crowd up is generally considered a good thing for safety]. But the plaintiffs are betting there’s a non-zero that they’ll offer some sort of settlement just to avoid the hassle (and continuing bad PR).

I get the initial reaction. But, how to you punish someone who deliberately puts the lives of thousands of people at risk for his own ego and amusement? It’s either jail or all the money. Not to mention, rich people are a lot fucking richer than they used to be.

Like it or not, huge money judgments are essentially the only way to hold large corporations even remotely responsible for their actions in today’s dystopian end-stage capitalism.

    Good.

Needs to be much higher with prison involved.  Maybe an execution is in order.  Children lost their life for crying out loud.

    • austincwolf-av says:

Really?? How do you prevent crowd-crush?? Its been understood for decades that when 9 people are constrained within a square meter, the reaults are death. Too lazy to look it up, but this has happened at “holy” sites within my lifetime… yet, I do not recall people suing the deities, or the holy-grounds-keepers

Your sentiments are quite ridiculous. This is a money grab by opportunistic lawyers. May the people who died rest in peace. I’m not even a fan of Travis Scott nor do I know his music. Do people really think he meant foe this to happen? Chill out and stop being so bitter!

Nobody gives a fuck what happens to children in this country. Kindergarten and first grade children were murdered by gunfire at their elementary school and nothing changed.

    • p1t1o-av says:

Execution is immoral in any context including this one.

    • i-miss-splinter-av says:

I agree completely. Heads should roll for this. Companies bankrupted. But what does it matter that children died? Do their lives matter more than the others that were lost that day? This would be a horrible preventable tragedy even if children hadn’t died.

Turns out you can’t just tell 50,000 people to ‘rage’ and not have any repercussions.

  • anthonypirtle-av says:

I hope Scott and company are paying for this for the rest of their careers.

  • coldfire0101-av says:

dont get the inclusion of apple, fences around cameras limited them getting out but didnt limit them rushing in please explain
