Trevor Noah has now set the date for his final day as host of The Daily Show With Trevor Noah, with Comedy Central issuing a press release today stating that Thursday, December 8 will be Noah’s final broadcast.

Noah surprised many—including, reportedly, some people on the show’s crew—when he announced to his audience, back on September 29, that his seventh year hosting the series would be the last. Noah has expressed a desire to get back to doing more touring as a stand-up comedian; already an established international presence when he took over the series from Jon Stewart back in 2015, Noa commented back at the time that he was taking something of a pay cut by moving to the series, which massively curtailed his ability to tour.

In the press release, Comedy Central noted that the week leading up to Noah’s Thursday night swan song will be spent paying homage to his tenure. The network also announced that the show will go on hiatus for the year following December 8, returning on January 17, 2023— “with additional details forthcoming.”

That, obviously, being an allusion to the big question now hanging over The Daily Show, i.e., “Who’ll be the fourth host of one of Comedy Central’s most long-running and successful franchises?” Early speculation centered on Noah-era regular contributor Roy Wood, Jr.—whose response to said speculation mostly involved making fun of TMZ’s photo choices for him on Twitter. The questions surrounding the series are also exacerbated by reports of problems high up at Comedy Central, with a recent THR piece suggesting that new CEO Chris McCarthy—who issued a statement today praising Noah, and got one from the outgoing host in return—has failed to establish strong relationships with the talent who actually makes the network’s shows.

I say we go in a completely new direction with this.Imagine – “The Daily Show with Amanda from HR”.She’s really nice. No real experience hosting, but I owe her a few favors and thought this might do it.

I was going to say that I can’t imagine anyone less talented than Trevor Noah but then I remembered the AVClub still exists.

    Samantha Bee is available.

My money is on Roy Wood Jnr

I don’t see them doing two Black hosts in a row, but that could just be the cynic in me.  Plus they also have Charlamagne’s show, which, though, is bad.

        • Mr-John-av says:

The word was they’re trying to keep Wood Jnr there, I would hope the conversation about having a black host wouldn’t happen, since it’s already happened, and Wood Jnr is an incredible talent to keep.If you’ve not seen him in Confess Fletch, it’s well worth your time.

Oh yeah, you can really see current Comedy Central executives letting a woman in her 50s host a show

i doubt they’d consider anyone that left the show to do a competing show that has already been canceled. hasan minhaj, larry wilmore, michelle wolf and jordan klepper (to a lesser extent) would also be good…but like, they already did their own daily shows and noone wanted it. kind of a hard sell at this point.jabookie is kind of the only correspondent with some sauce that i could see plausibly taking over, but frankly i doubt he wants the gig.

With Minhaj and Wolf, the fact that they were on Netflix was a big part of the problem. Nothing in the weekly topical comedy or interview type show has worked. I believe both would be great hosts as they had two of my favorite post Daily Show shows. And I would absolutely love it if Wilmore (or Robin Thede for that matter) became host.

this would probably give an executive hives if it was ever pitched, but i think a rotating stable of TDS all-stars could actually be really interesting. the daily show brand was always bigger than any one person anyway. easy way to future-proof it a little, too.

Jordan Klepper should always cover right wing rallies. Don’t put him behind a desk. His is the only Daily show segment that I still follow. If they make him the host, his segment should be the entire show.

That’s really smart how you want to hire a proven failure who sucks.

  • drips-av says:

What the hell, he said it he was still going to be around a fair while, allowing plenty of time to help with the transition. 2 months isn’t very long, brah. I was given the impression it’d be more like… next summer…

I love Roy Wood Jr. He’s easily the best part of the show (at least outside of Noah). But I’m not sure he’d be great as host. He’s great in the way that the funny side character in a movie is. I’d rather see him continue at that with a new host.

  • pairswithjam-av says:

I’m sorry to see him go. Despite an awkward start to the series, Noah’s Daily Show is now a reliably good time. Light, brief, and really funny. I’ll miss it. I’m excited for what’s to come.

Is there another comedian who joked about protesters getting slaughtered that can host The Daily Show?

  • recognitions-av says:

    Logan Paul.

  • respondinglate-av says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if it went multi-anchor as opposed to being a single-host show.

  • jmyoung123-av says:

I expected him to be here through the beginning of next year. February at the earliest. This is pretty short notice.

Where are they going to find a transgender autistic Muslim PoC woman (are we allowed to use “female” again yet?) comedian on such short notice?

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

I’m sure they can throw a stick and hit another South African polyglot who is otherwise a total charisma vacuum.

Good.  Now get an American to host who isn’t such a smarmy a-hole.
