Tuca & Bertie, the beloved animated comedy starring Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish, has been canceled. Like Netflix before them, Adult Swim will no longer be making new episodes. Though credit where it’s due, Adult Swim let the show run for a second season before giving it the ax.

Canceling Tuca & Bertie never gets any easier. It was difficult for the people who made it and fans who watched it when the show was initially canceled by Netflix in 2019. Adult Swim, surprisingly, swooped in to snatch up the show in 2020, letting it run for two seasons of increased viewership, according to Deadline.

Tuca & Bertie has sadly been canceled,” show creator Lisa Hanawalt tweeted. But, as before, Hanawalt believes there is a chance that the show will, again, go on in some capacity.

“I still have a beautiful and weird ending to T&B in mind, hopefully someday we’ll get the chance to finish their story,“ Hanawalt wrote in a statement. “In the meantime, I’m not done creating. I’ve witnessed so many people connecting with this show on a profound level, and I intend to keep telling stories like this, no matter what.”

Tuca & Bertie has sadly been canceled.

To all our fans – we love you and can’t thank you enough for your support over the years. Please never stop making weird fan art (and dressing up as the characters for Halloween!), it brings me endless joy.

Working with Adult Swim was creatively fulfilling, our execs were all smart and thoughtful, and I’m grateful that we got the space to make all these wild and heartfelt episodes about things that matter to me very much.

I’m so proud of the work done by all my talented coworkers and collaborators on this show. Please watch the end credits and take note of all these names in the cast and crew. I’m also very glad we were able to be covered by The Animation Guild and the Writers Guild of America. I hope any show creators who have the leverage to fight for unionizing their productions will continue to do so.

Jeez. People really didn’t want to watch this wonderful show.

It was a fun , really weird show.Kind of like BoJack Horsemans very distant but very very upbeat cousin.

They did a piss poor job of marketing it.  I bet people would watch it more if they knew it was even out there.

I appreciated the fact that they were doing something different and I gave it a couple of chances. But ultimately it was far too manic for me; I found it exhausting to watch.

That’s fair. I’m glad you gave it a shot. I really enjoyed it.

It felt weirdly clumsy to me. Where Bojack turned on a dime from silly and hilarious to sad and touching, T&B would lurch between tiresomely wacky and unpleasantly glum.

So how much of this was the pedo thing and how much was Discovery shenanigans?

I wonder it it had anything to do with that whole Tiffany Haddish kid video scandal.

Given how lackluster the Adult Swim seasons were and how muted the response to s3 was, I’m not surprised.

  • disqusdrew-av says:

I felt like this was coming considering the Haddish scandal but it still sucks. The season finale ended up a being a pretty decent send off if this is the last we’ll ever see of the show.

Tuca & Bertie! Coming soon to Quibi 2.Oh!

It’s definitely a Discovery thing. Contrary to most of the shows on Adult Swim, it wasn’t a Warner Bros production, as it came from a different production company. And due to the way Netflix still owned rights on the first season, they couldn’t offer the complete series on streaming. Season 3 was also announced the day the season 2 finale aired. When the season 3 finale aired, there wasn’t any controversy over Haddish. They simply didn’t decide to renew it.

    • roboj-av says:

There’s controversy over Haddish now, and that’s probably one of the main reasons why they didn’t choose to renew it. Besides, it would’ve been hard to do this show without her going forward.

    Thanks, Tiffany.

I know some people liked it (I tried the first ep and it wasn’t for me), but all the accusations that it was unfairly canceled don’t really ring true. It clearly doesn’t get enough watchers to sustain.

It took ages for the second season to be available legally in Canada, and by that time my interest had waned. I kept telling myself I’d have to rewatch season 1 first to catch up, and then… stuff happened.
