The text that reportedly led to Tucker Carlson’s firing from Fox: “It’s not how white men fight”

A text message Carlson sent to one of his producers after the Jan. 6 insurrection laid bare his white nationalist beliefs, and the hypocrisy inherent in them

Yesterday, the nebulous circumstances behind Tucker Carlson’s abrupt axing from Fox News on April 21 came into sharper and more alarming clarity thanks to a text obtained by The New York Times, which finds Carlson telling on his own inflammatory, racist views while discussing the Jan. 6 insurrection with one of his producers.

The text—which was included in redacted form as part of a filing included in Dominion Voting Systems’ defamation suit against Fox, but previously unreported—reportedly alarmed officials at the network, who feared the text could become public when Carlson took the stand and raise broader concerns about the network outside the scope of the suit. Dominion initially took Fox to court over the 2020 election, alleging that Fox knowingly disseminated falsehoods about election fraud. The A.V. Club has reached out to representatives for both Carlson and Fox News for comment.

In the message, which Carlson allegedly sent to one of his producers in the weeks following the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection, he describes watching a “group of Trump guys” attack an “Antifa kid,” and “pounding the living shit out of him.” Calling the attack “dishonorable,” Carlson opines: “It’s not how white men fight.” The full transcript of the text finds Carlson musing on his knee-jerk inability to see the “Antifa creep” as a human and the perils of reducing “people to their politics” in the same breath that he off-handedly reveals thinly-veiled white supremacist logic. The message can be read in full here:

A couple of weeks ago, I was watching video of people fighting on the street in Washington. A group of Trump guys surrounded an Antifa kid and started pounding the living shit out of him. It was three against one, at least. Jumping a guy like that is dishonorable obviously. It’s not how white men fight. Yet suddenly I found myself rooting for the mob against the man, hoping they’d hit him harder, kill him. I really wanted them to hurt the kid. I could taste it. Then somewhere deep in my brain, an alarm went off: this isn’t good for me. I’m becoming something I don’t want to be. The Antifa creep is a human being. Much as I despise what he says and does, much as I’m sure I’d hate him personally if I knew him, I shouldn’t gloat over his suffering. I should be bothered by it. I should remember that somewhere somebody probably loves this kid, and would be crushed if he was killed. If I don’t care about those things, if I reduce people to their politics, how am I better than he is?

Per the NYT, the message prompted the Fox board to hire “an outside law firm to conduct an investigation into Mr. Carlson’s conduct.” The text also reportedly had a heavy hand in Fox’s decision to settle with Dominion for $787,500,000, roughly half of the initial $1.6 billion Dominion sought. Carlson’s personal texts—others of which saw him harshly criticizing Trump as a “demonic force” and referring to female Fox employees with misogynistic language—were collected as part of the trial’s discovery process.

Over the last six years, Carlson had consistently espoused white nationalist beliefs on his late-night program Tucker Carlson Tonight, going as far as to endorse “The Great Replacement” theory, notably cited in a manifesto written by Christchurch, New Zealand mass murderer Brenton Harrison Tarrant shortly before he killed 51 people in a mosque in 2019. In 2018, Carlson lost advertisers after stating that immigrants make the United States “poorer and dirtier;” he also opined in 2019 that white supremacy in America is a “hoax.”

On Monday, the NYT—along with a collective of other media organizations—called for the judge overseeing the Dominion defamation lawsuit to release some of Carlson’s redacted messages to the public. The content of the Jan. 6 text was disclosed to the NYT during interviews with several individuals close to the case who spoke on the condition of anonymity; in public filings, the text remains blocked out in black. Although it was uncertain if the message would actually be revealed in court, Carlson’s behind-the-scenes conduct became such a large concern that Fox was willing to sacrifice the extensive viewership his show brought in on short notice, indicating there’s possibly even more to the story.

“ That’s not how white men fight”. I imagine they’ll use that in marketing for assault weapons.

I’d argue that a group of guys beating up in full force on one smaller and likely weaker person all alone is EXACTLY how white men fight.

Or, at the very least, the only way Tucker Carlson would ever have been involved in a fight.

Kevin Hart, The Rock’s close friend and frequent cooking buddy, was busy preparing dinner in The Rock’s kitchen. He had come over to help The Rock cook a meal for a group of friends. As he was chopping vegetables, he noticed something odd about the cutting board.“What the heck is this?” he muttered to himself, looking at a strange, brown substance on the board. As he inspected it more closely, he realized that it was feces. He couldn’t believe it. He looked around the kitchen, and sure enough, he found feces stains on the floor and walls.“Rock! What the hell is this? Did you poop in the kitchen again?” Kevin shouted, disgusted. The Rock came running into the kitchen, his face turning red. “I’m sorry, man. I had to go, and I didn’t make it to the bathroom.”Kevin was furious. “Do you have any idea how unsanitary this is? I’ve been preparing food on these surfaces. I could get seriously sick.”The Rock hung his head, realizing the gravity of the situation. “I know. I’m sorry. Let’s clean this up and make sure everyone is safe.”The two spent the next few hours cleaning the kitchen and sanitizing all surfaces. They also made sure to throw away any food that may have come in contact with the feces. Despite their efforts, it was too late. The next day, Kevin woke up feeling sick.He was rushed to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with E. coli, a serious bacterial infection that can be life-threatening. The doctors told him that he likely contracted it from the fecal matter in The Rock’s kitchen.Kevin was outraged. “I can’t believe this happened. The Rock needs to take responsibility for his actions and make sure this never happens again.”The Rock was devastated. He never meant to hurt his friend, and he knew that he needed to take drastic measures to prevent this from happening in the future. He immediately hired a professional cleaning crew to deep clean his kitchen and install a new bathroom closer to the kitchen. He also committed to seeking therapy to address his bathroom habits. In the end, Kevin made a full recovery, but the incident put a strain on his friendship with The Rock. It took time, but eventually, they were able to rebuild their relationship and move past the incident. The Rock learned his lesson and made sure to never compromise the safety and well-being of his loved ones again.

A few of these stories have come out now, claiming Carlson was fired for behavior and texts that go against progressive and liberal — not conservative — values. There was one that claimed it was because his “prayer talk” freaked out Murdoch and another that claimed it was because of his contributions to a culture of misogyny at Fox. They’re all baffling. Why would Fox fire Carlson for the opinions and behaviors that made him famous? I thought it was widely understood among progressives and liberals that Fox *promotes* white supremacy and misogyny, but none of these articles attempt to rectify the two opposing ideas (“We all know Fox is racist, but this was just TOO racist.”). They just…. present the story, like it’s self-evident why Fox would fire an anchor for racist or misogynist texts. It’s weird, because the simplest and most obvious explanation was the first one: Carlson embarrassed Murdoch and Fox when texts came out showing he knew the “voter fraud” story was a lie, hated Trump, and yet also hated when his colleagues’ behavior threatened to keep Trump out of power. Right? I keep re-reading the texts because it feels like I must be missing something. Maybe I’ve been watching too much Succession but it feels like an intentional campaign on the part of Fox, or maybe the PR and/or comms teams of individuals who are high up at Fox, to direct attention away from the original story. But the part that still wouldn’t make sense is why outlets like NYT or Vanity Fair would go along with it. “Tucker Carlson — and maybe by extension, Fox itself? — doesn’t believe their own lies and hates Trump on a personal level but wants him in office because it’s good for business” is a great story if you don’t like Fox. Is it because it’s just too weird and dissonant if Carlson is simultaneously correct (Sidney Powell is a liar, Jan 6 was an embarrassing, reckless display) and dangerously, odiously incorrect (he’s clearly a racist and a misogynist)? Why is there so little skepticism for the claim that Fox let Carlson go for behavior that Fox has historically embraced and promoted? I’m really curious what others think, because again, I really feel like I’m missing something, and it’s very possible that I am!

    • milligna000-av says:

you’re not missing much. it’s just Rupert doing damage control and rearranging his scumbag choir.

    • lisalionhearts-av says:

Absolutely! I think all of these “explanations” are just saving face.

    • egerz-av says:

My theory is that Foxworld basically operates like the Russian state. Anyone who would appear on camera at Fox News is obviously a horrible person, otherwise they wouldn’t take the job, so every single on-air personality has “kompromat” on the books. The toxic culture at Fox encourages their talent to drink the Kool Aid and internalize and then freely express the Fox worldview, which is all ugly white male supremacist corporate feudalism bullshit. Therefore, Fox News TV personalities all have embarrassing texts and emails that can be used as a pretext for excommunication whenever they displease the upper brass for other reasons.Maybe Tucker spilled a drink on one of the Murdochs at a party or made a pass at Rupert’s much younger fiancée. We’ll never know the real reason. But with the file they had on him, there was lots of stuff like this (“I found myself rooting for the mob against the man, hoping they’d hit him harder, kill him.”) that they can point to and say “That’s beyond the pale here at Fox News!” and act all progressive about it, daring liberals to question their motives.

    • wakemein2024-av says:

I’m inclined to think it was a financial decision. Whoever fills the prime time slot at Fox is going to be a star. They don’t need to pay anyone the money Tucker was making, especially now that they’ve taken a hit, and maybe have more on the horizon. Murdoch just told his people to find an excuse that wouldn’t result in another lawsuit.

      • teageegeepea-av says:

My understanding is that the Fox stock price dropped sharply, because nobody expects his replacement to get similar ratings. Murdoch is just rich enough that he can afford to fire Tucker, like how Musk can afford to lose money on Twitter.

    • roboj-av says:

“doesn’t believe their own lies and hates Trump on a personal level but wants him in office because it’s good for business”Yep, and that’s pretty much it. Rupert for the most part doesn’t truly believe in the pap he pushes to the rubes, as he has said positive things about Obama and other major Democrats in the past, and also how he was quick to toss out Bill O’Reilly, Glenn Beck, and Rodger Ailes. But pushing far-right agitprop sells and sells well, so he’ll keep propping up the demagogues to keep spewing as long as they keep making him money.

    • gargsy-av says:

“another that claimed it was because of his contributions to a culture of misogyny at Fox. They’re all baffling.”

Explain how it’s “baffling” that they’d fire someone BECAUSE THEY’RE BEING SUED OVER THAT PERSON’S BEHAVIOUR, please.

    • gargsy-av says:

“It’s weird, because the simplest and most obvious explanation was the first one: Carlson embarrassed Murdoch and Fox when texts came out showing he knew the “voter fraud” story was a lie”

And, to you, this explains why Tucker Carlson was fired and also why Hannity and Ingraham weren’t?

They *ALL* had texts admitting to lying, but in your fractured mind it makes sense that they would fire *ONE* of them, and specifically the one with the biggest audience.

    • katanahottinroof-av says:

As bad as this is, I think that he was more likely let go due to the coming lawsuit from his staffer, Abby Grossberg.

    • rogar131-av says:

It’s fitting that this is the story the Times got. I wouldn’t be surprised if the other (non-Fox) far right media are getting the story that Carlson was fired because of his texts mocking Trump’s election win claim and the guests on the show that were stating that. Other outlets would get the misogyny as the reason for the firing. Carlson actually has so many reasons out there that Murdock can narrowcast a different reason for each demographic.

      • officialannveal-av says:

This makes sense to me, but it just brings me back to the question of why an outlet like the NYT or Vanity Fair would go along with that. If I were an NYT writer, and a source at Fox called me to tell me that actually, it wasn’t the Dominion texts, it was the misogyny, but don’t tell anyone I told you that, my piece would be about how someone at Fox is trying to shop that story around, not just a transcript of what they told me with no question or context. When a source tells you a story that’s convenient for them, appealing for your audience, and yet doesn’t necessarily fit with facts you’ve actually observed, you should get *less* credulous, not more. At the very least, I would include some examples of past Carlson misogyny that did not result in him being fired. You know what I mean? That’s the part that’s weird.

        • rogar131-av says:

Well, supposedly everyone is in their own bubble now, and doesn’t pay attention to anything out side of it. Maybe it’s true…

You’re joking… but I wonder if that actually would hurt them in any legal proceedings. Admitting that you don’t actually hate Antifa people, but just spout the hate on TV, just adds to the pattern of Tucker saying one thing on air while believing something else privately.

    • liebkartoffel-av says:

Of course they love him. He says the quiet parts loud.

    • darrylarchideld-av says:

He accomplished the same thing as Richard Spencer, just on a mainstream TV network: made literal white supremacy look civil and palatable. His base is obviously pro-white nationalist in belief, but even they wouldn’t tune into some tatted up skinhead covered in swastikas and iron crosses. But when that message is coming out of a middle-aged concern troll in Men’s Wearhouse, one with a high-profile “news” show on a major network, it takes a “fringe” stance and shoves it right into the Overton window. Exactly where they want it.Something that I think anyone outside rightwing ideology misses, is that Donald Trump or Tucker Carlson aren’t beloved for their skills or insight; they’re beloved for giving their base a hall pass to express their most hateful beliefs. They claim that hall pass is a “freedom” they’ve been denied in some policy sense, but it’s really just the rhetorical “freedom” to stop feigning basic human empathy. To ignore the mainstream shame they were once expected to feel for being bigots.

  • recognitions-av says:

Lol there is no way that got him fired, he’s said worse on the air. This is either a smokescreen designed to hide the real reason, or a shot across the bow at Carlson that he better be a good boy and keep quiet or they’ll reveal worse.

  • rob1984-av says:

It’s weird the board is pretending this is a shocking revelation when his show was basically just straight up white supremacy like this every night.

          • daddddd-av says:

…yeah, I don’t have a problem with the ANES, I’m saying the study used in the graph is from a pilot survey. It’s given to a tiny sample of people to test the verbiage and logistics before handing out the real Sample-Size survey to the larger pool. It’s literally just QA.

The Ns are non-trivial, but I take your point.

          • daddddd-av says:

Just for money and power.Honestly, those people deserve it. They’ve already shown they don’t GAF about the millions of lives they ruin by starting a cult of lies, so why shouldn’t we wish something bad to happen to them? Take “tasty revenge” out of the equation—-it would likely save more from being harmed by them. The thing that bothers me about Tucker is, you never actually know what he believes in. We have the texts that say “Trump sux, I wish he would go away”, yet in situations like THIS, he seems like the shining example of a Trump lover.Which means he’s either a psychopath or a nihilist.

I mean, that text is pretty damn racist, but he said much more racist stuff than that on the air all the time.  I have a hard time believing that this is what got him fired.

    • liebkartoffel-av says:

Yeah, the only different between this and what he says on air is that in the text he manages to dredge up the tiniest iota of shame.

  • mdizzle-av says:

i dehumanize nazi GQP pieces of shit on the daily. not a single tear if they all died in a fire. is that a problem?

    • poisonisblue-av says:

Definitely not a problem. Every last person needs to be doing this until these motherfuckers are too scared to even leave their basements (again).

  • popculturesurvivor-av says:

I hate to say it, but I think the point’s being missed here. The fact that Tucker is even asking how rooting for the mob makes him any better than the antifa kid he hates proves that he’s still human. The problem is that it didn’t seem to affect what he did on his show at all: he was all about stoking fear and resentment until the very end. It’s one thing to have these doubts, which is normal and human, and another thing to ignore them completely for your own benefit. There’s a famous speech by — I think — Heydrich to a bunch of SS officers where he basically states that it’s unlikely that every Jewish person you know is a bad person, and that everyone has a Jew or two in their lives that they wouldn’t want to harm. He then goes on to say that the Nazi program demanded that Germans ignore this and kill every single Jew anyway. The point was to silence your conscience and harden your heart. I think it’s worth noting that Tucker knew that he should be a better person. He just didn’t care and went off and did what he did anyway. That’s really the most awful thing about this. There are people, like, say, Alex Jones, who genuinely believe the bullshit they’re selling. Tucker’s different. He’s obviously not without humanity: he just stifled his for fun and profit. That’s really, really low.

This, all of this.Conservatives running smack into the point face-first but missing it anyway

  • coatituesday-av says:

I was just thinking the other day, Tucker Carlson is surely a good fighter! He’s still standing, and just look at that face. You know it’s been punched hundreds of times.  Or should be.

  • joeleearound-av says:

Im struggling to understand how what tucker said is racist.  I dobt like the guy but none of what he said was racist. People should read the full transcript of what he said. He even admonishes himself for enjoying the beating for a moment. His views on that’s not how white men fight is honorable in my opinion and also reflects his culture, how he was raised and what is valued.  If anything, we should respect him for those views in comparison to the usual thuggish behaviour of others.

  • seven-deuce-av says:

    White supremacy. lol

  • biggestbird-av says:

Reading the text and seeing what he says in this text makes me see 2 things, 1 seeing that antifa was a major problem for people i can agree on why he’s saying this, and 2 he stops himself from thinking about that kinda thing and see the issue with that kinda of thinking and I honestly go look past the whole text after he made that last part.

  • Axetwin-av says:

You mean the guy that was hired to spout bigoted rhetoric for years on their “performance news” network was a bigot in real life? I’d show you my shocked face, but I’d need 6 hours of mediation before I could muster up the concentration to pull it off. 6 hours, bare minimum.

  • michaelzike-av says:

“Jealousy doth raise it’s ugly brainwashed liberal idiot head, AGAIN!”

  • rafterman00-av says:

So, Tucker’s very public racism wasn’t enough to get him fired?
