He’s totally right about how what counts as a gaffe has changed. The West Wing had an episode where it was kind of a minor scandal when President Bartlett “accidentally” (on purpose) on a hot mic mildly suggested that his opponent was *maybe* not as smart as him. It’s gotta be tough for fiction to actually portray inappropriate statements now, especially really farcical stuff like Veep.

I (a non golf player) could beat Trump at golf if I could cheat as much as he does.  Actually we’d tie because everything would be a hole in 1.

I didn’t look at the video, I’m at work, but… yeah Simons could beat Trump. Trump cheats like a motherfucker. Before the election, a guy he did business with, can’t remember who, said that was reason enough not to vote for him. That is, anyone who cheats at golf, or even feels the need to, is a crook. A golf game is not you against everyone else: it’s everyone vs. the course. That’s why pro golfers can have dinner after a tournament and not be at each others’ throats. Trump wants to be the best, so he’ll “call it two” when it’s fucking six, he’ll give himself putts he doesn’t even shoot…. Business-wise, it works to his disadvantage in ways he’s too stupid to comprehend: people he plays with won’t call him on it, because it’s a childish thing for him to do, it makes him feel like he’s a winner AND getting away with something, so it’s easy to get what they want from him.

The best description I heard for Trump (in that it is brief and tends to shut down any curious, ‘maybe-there’s-something-to-him’ queries) is that he just plays himself as a chump all the time.
He’s so concerned about who wins the handshake or is in the center of a photo or gets the most compliments that he doesn’t notice he’s getting hosed on the actual deal (and liking it!).
