Ahead of tonight’s Grammys, Viola Davis has already been named the winner of the award for Best Audiobook, Narration, And Storytelling Recording for the audio version of her memoir, Finding Me, which means she has officially achieved EGOT status. Davis is the 18th person to earn this honor, which was popularized by Tracy Morgan’s character on 30 Rock, and the third to pull it off in the last four years—Jennifer Hudson won it last year and legendary composer Alan Menken won it in 2020. Other EGOT holders include John Legend, Whoopi Goldberg, Mel Brooks, Audrey Hepburn, and Rita Moreno.

Davis has two Tonys, one for King Hedly II and one for the revival of Fences, she got her Emmy for How To Get Away With Murder, and she got her Oscar for the film adaptation of Fences in 2016. Variety also notes that she was the first Black actor to have won acting’s “Triple Crown,” getting an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony (if you wanted to check the math on that, Hudson earned her EGOT before Davis did, but Davis won most of the individual awards before Hudson, and Godlberg’s Emmy is not for acting).

Davis’ next project, post-EGOT win, will be starring in a Peacemaker spin-off about Amanda Waller, which is pretty funny (and shows her range!). Imagine any other EGOT winner immediately moving on to a show about being Harley Quinn’s boss. Actually… all living EGOT winners should be involved in the Suicide Squad to some extent, since that would be one way for Warner to set its DC Comics adaptations apart from what Marvel is doing across the aisle (is there even a single EGOT winner in the MCU?).

The rest of the 2023 Grammy Awards will be handed out gradually over the course of the rest of the day.

Pfft, wake me when she has her Nickelodeon’s Kid’s Choice Award and can finally claim the coveted NicKCAGEOT

Would it kill you to mention the inventor of the EGOT, Philip Michael Thomas?

My “issue” with the EGOT is it’s usually some composer writing for different mediums, not some bad ass multi talent winning “the big three (or whatever)“ from every competition. It’s still cool, don’t get me wrong, but you’re not winning say, best director, album of the year, lead in a play and whatever for the Emmy.

I would absolutely hate to be the guy at a party with a composer who had an EGOT for different mediums, and someone introduces me to them, and that person also says “Hey, did you know they had an EGOT?” and then saying “Pffffffft. For composing. Enjoy your non-badass EGOT, you non-badass no-talent hack.”

I’m exaggerating, of course, but implying that someone who doesn’t win via some sort of “big three” or “top tier” or “triple crown” feels reductive and kinda crappy? Like, to break into any creative industry, and not only do well enough to make a living, but do it for long enough that you’re recognized by your peers and win awards for it? That is incredibly bad-ass.

It’s still bad ass, don’t get me wrong. Just not as bad ass as it could be. It’s like a “true hat trick” (right foot, left foot, head, in a row) vs a “regular” hat trick. Like how they don’t count honorary or lifetime awards for EGOT.

I think what he’s saying is that the billing of the EGOT is that this is a person who is really just all over entertainment in all of its forms, and you think of somebody like Mel Brooks, with an Oscar for original screenplay, Emmys for writing and acting, Tony awards for best musical because his show The Producers crushed it, Grammy awards for his comedy album and long form music video and so on. Compared to that, it’s a little underwhelming when it’s like, worked on a musical that won a Tony, then co-wrote a song for a movie that won the Oscar for best song and the Grammy for best song for a visual medium, and then co-wrote a song for a TV show that won an Emmy for best song from a show. Don’t get me wrong, that’s a great career in writing songs, but you hear EGOT, you think, “this person is a quadruple threat, killing it on the stage, small screen, big screen, recording booth, they just kill it.” But I mean, Andrew Lloyd Webber has an EGOT, but it’s like a whole bunch of really impressive Tony awards, and then Grammy awards for cast albums from some of the shows, and an Emmy for a tv broadcast of Jesus Christ Superstar, and an Oscar for a song from Evita.

The complaint isn’t about a composer winning, it’s about a single composition winning multiple award types for no additional effort: e.g Marvin Hamlisch winning both an Oscar and a Grammy for The Way We Were, Andrew Lloyd Weber winning both a Tony and Grammy for Evita, etc. However, in each case the composer also had other wins in some categories so their EGOT is not dependent on the overlap. The closest is that Andrew Llyod Weber’s Oscar is for a song that was written specifically for the movie version of Evita.

“Imagine any other EGOT winner immediately moving on to a show about being Harley Quinn’s boss.”I think Whoopi Goldberg followed her EGOT win with Star Trek Nemesis.“is there even a single EGOT winner in the MCU?”I can’t think of an actor, but Wandavision has an EGOT-driven soundtrack

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are only a Tony away from an EGOT. Bring on that rock opera we all know they have in them!

  • monsterenergyqueef-av says:

Even Tracy Morgan (Jordan) figured out that the easiest way to EGOT was write a song.

  • ryanlohner-av says:

My favorite tidbit: Audrey Hepburn is the only person to date to complete an EGOT after their death, by getting a posthumous Grammy for a recording of children’s stories.

I’m still waiting for someone to pull off the CLEMPP – Nobel prizes in all six categories of Chemistry, Literature, Economics, Medicine, Physics, and the Peace prize.

  • kim-porter-av says:

Nothing against anyone in particular, but the main takeaway seems to be that the Grammys have way to many awards categories. Say what you will about the Oscars, but you really earn those things.

  • galdarn-av says:

Yes but, as Lil Rel Howery said, when is Viola finally going to get some recognition???

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

Should be ok. I understand they’re very treatable if caught soon enough.
