The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on Sunday, September 19, with comedian and The Neighborhood star Cedric The Entertainer taking over for Jimmy Kimmel as host. The Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences is ditching the massive Zoom call this year, as the ceremony will once more be in person, but there will be a limited audience (now you know why you weren’t invited.) Here are TV editor Danette Chavez’s predictions of the winners for the major series awards, including the beyond-tight race in the limited/anthology series category. Look for our Emmys liveblog and news coverage on Sunday, starting at 7:30 p.m. ET.

    Don Cheadle or bust!

Only the shows that I like should win. The ones that I don’t like or haven’t seen are inferior and therefore shouldn’t win

Especially of other people watch those shows. Fuck THOSE people and their bad taste.

In my case this would result in a Mythic Quest sweep of all eligible categories. (Why does the Academy (ugh) hate Mythic Quest?)Actually, I watched and enjoyed Ted Lasso too, so I’m all right with that.

      Controversial, but I’ll allow it.

CROWN chances: They gave a guest role Emmy to Claire Foy’s 5 min cameo this year. It’s a horrible nom/win, but may show how much voters love the Crown this year.

    Oh great… a slideshow.

I really loved Hacks, but for whatever reason it seems like the pilot is the episode that got the most nomination love. That’s going to hurt its award chances in writing/directing categories, I think, because the first episode is fine but it is largely a place setter for some absolutely brilliant episodes later in the series. Episode 8 is, for me, the true standout—that’s the one where Deborah goes to the comedy club and confronts the owner onstage regarding his sexual harassment of young comedians. That episode is so revealing about both Ava and Deborah and their worldviews, and it is written and shot so perfectly. The finale and episode 6 (the one at the spa) are also both very strong. The pilot was, for me at least, not very memorable. I’m still thinking about the finale, with the funeral scene, and episode 8.

I May Destroy You needs to get all the wins. Strongest show of the year.

However, I dearly, DEARLY loved WandaVision, and if it got even just 1 or 2 wins, I’d be remarkably happy. I don’t think the reasons it’s good are the reasons that the voters are looking for. Despite the ending (which some people weren’t on board for, and that’s fine), WandaVision proved to me that an established “product” like the MCU could still create works within it that can surprise, take risks, and allow creators both on and offscreen room to breathe and create something wholly their own. It was, to be frank, astonishing to me – that an MCU work could explore nuances like that, all while poking fun at greater Marvel history.

I dunno. I just fucking loved WandaVision. But if IMDY or Underground Railroad get wins, I’ll be happy.

Also, and I say this as a Ted Lasso fan, let’s…maybe move on from Ted Lasso a bit. Good lord.

I was watching the compilation of the WandaVision intros today, and it occurred to me that there should be an Emmy category for opening/end credits sequences. People put a lot of work into those and some of them are quite good.

Is I May Destroy You the one with the lady who looks like an alien?

  • luasdublin-av says:

No …What we do in the Shadows , no Mythic Quest? Fuck that.

    • murrychang-av says:

Keep in mind that awards shows are bullshit.

    • refinedbean-av says:

Would that have been S1 or S2 of Mythic Quest? S1 had that one bottle ep that was tremendous, but S2 was…just above average?

WWITS is and always will be robbed, though.

Shadows wasn’t on this year in time to be eligible. Season 2 aired in spring 2020 and was nominated for eight Emmys last year, winning none. Season 3 started this summer, after the cut off date of May 31.Mythic Quest was nominated for two awards this year. Outstanding Narrator for Anthony Hopkins in the Everlight episode. And Outstanding Sound Editing, half hour show, also Everlight.

Leave it to AV to bring up Amber Ruffin when her name is no where to be found. Give it a rest guys.

  • schwartz666-av says:

I don’t understand the lack Variety Sketch Show nominees. Why no Aunty Donna or I Think You Should Leave love? Did Netflix just not bother to submit them?I’m sure boring as SNL will win yet again, but still.

    • deebs1976-av says:

I came here to ask the same thing. Why the hell wouldn’t “I Think You Should Leave” be nominated? I mean, we all know the answer, which is that the people who vote on this stuff have shitty taste, but still, it’s maddening.

  • smithereen-av says:

I know Ruffin gets you guys lots of Facebook attention but that’s no reason to bring her up in the middle of a slideshow

The Mandalorian should win best drama. It is the closest thing to a water-cooler show in some time, aside from flashes in the pan like Tiger King. And it is truly great tv. Great acting for the most part and reliably top notch production values. I love how it tiptoes between episodic and serial (especially season 2) – it combines the best aspects of both in a way that very few shows have successfully done. Season 1 introduced the single most memorable character of what, the last couple decades, despite him having no name, somehow as a total surprise. And yet season 2 was not even close to a let-down. It has some great competition, but for me its the hands-down winner. One of the best shows in a long time.

A slideshow of paragraphs of text? Seriously? Do you live in a world that has no scroll or something?

  • reinhardtleeds-av says:

How is Mare of Easttown “comfort TV,” exactly? Because it had an ending?
