The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards are Sunday, with Watchmen and Succession leading all shows with 11 and 10 nominations, respectively. In anticipation of the ceremony, we’re asking:

Of the nominees, who deserves to win an Emmy this year?

previous arrowAnnie Murphy, —Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series next arrow

It’s almost guaranteed that the team will have a good Emmys night, but oddsmakers say Annie Murphy is the least likely to win out of the Canadian comedy’s four acting nominees. Sure, chews up the scenery like no other, and the Levys are cementing a comedy dynasty, but no Schitt’s character evolved as much as Murphy’s Alexis. While the actress is technically nominated for the final season of the series, it’s a reasonable bet that many voters discovered Schitt’s within the past year and tracked from beginning to end. It would have been easy to make Alexis a caricature, but Murphy gave us a complex, nuanced woman who found herself even as her world crumbled around her more than once. Plus, I’m really hoping for “A Little Bit Alexis” will be played by the invisible orchestra on Sunday. [Patrick Gomez]

    Rhea Seehorn!

Who actually deserves it? Antony Starr, as Homelander, in The Boys. Sure, the show and its cast didn’t sign up for the Emmys this year, but that shouldn’t be an issue. A performance like that should negate all the rules and allow the man to receive his prize as the top actor in a show in the field of television. His contribution to the show is invaluable. He embodies the persona of Homelander so well that you’ll forget you’re watching an actor play a role and think of him as the actual Homelander.

I agree, he is stunning in the series, I just wish I didn’t hate Hughie so much, and find him such an entitled, annoying spoilt brat (and very, very different to how he is in the comics) as because I dislike him so much I’m really struggling with this second season.

      • deletethisshitasshole-av says:

It’s funny to me that Hughie is sometimes Meg Ryan and sometimes Dennis Quaid. I see em both at different times depending on the scene.

Interesting. I actually really like Hughie, and I usually find his type of character – audience surrogates – to be kind of insufferable. Hughie has a bit of an edge for that type of role. He’s definitely serving an audience surrogate role, but he’s enough of his own character and not a complete nitwit about it, which I appreciate. I mean, the whole **SPOILERS FOR S2** exposing compound V thing shows he’s still pretty competent at developing some decent strategies, just like his few missions in season 1. **END SPOILERS**.

I hated Hughie in the comics. One of the most boring protagonists in comic book history. All he did was protest moving the plot along anytime they did something.

eddie absolutely has his name engraved on that emmy already. my 68 year old mother stayed up to watch that SNL – she quit watching the show when he left decades ago so this was a very big deal! she laughed so hard and loud her neighbours thought she fell out of bed. “like he never left, felt like he’s in this cast” was her review. i hope he comes back again, but i’d understand if he didn’t, it was a total mic drop of an episode.

Nicole Byer because I’m entirely partial. Do I think she’s specifically the best host of a show? Eh… And I haven’t seen everyone that was nominated. However I’m still sticking with this.

doesn’t matter who because if its not a black person they will just cry racism.

To me, Annie Murphy as Alexis has the greatest arc in tv history, even surpassing Wesley on Buffy & Angel. She also deserves an award for her dancing, even if Moira and Joceline didn’t really appreciate it

    • polarbearshots-av says:

Truth. Of course, Alexis really is a lead character. The show has four leads, and she’s one of the four. I get that the younger leads declared themselves supporting so as not to compete with Eugene and Catherine, but still. Alexis is a main character who has a magnificent character arc and Annie Murphy took a character that people wanted to hate and made her super lovable and rootable. The people who SHOULD get supporting actor Emmys are Emily Hampshire and Noah Reid, but that’s neither here nor there.

      • smittywerbenjagermanjensen22-av says:

Emily Hampshire as Stevie was so wonderful. She has won multiple Canadian Screen Awards for best supporting actress for Schitt’s Creek anyway, which might be more appropriate

I won’t complain if the win goes to Brian Cox, but Jeremy Strong absolutely deserves the Best Actor win this year. Nobody’s doing it like him right now.

Shouldn’t series that weren’t made in the US be left out of the running? This isn’t the Best Commonwealth Nations Actor award.

I feel like that all of the major awards do a terrible job with animation, with nominees that are often baffling and final choices that are often just awful. The Annies are often a lot better even if I sometimes disagree with their choices, but the Academy Awards and the Emmies just flat out make no sense when it comes to that medium. The fact that Bojack Horseman managed to crank out some of the flat out best episodes of television, period, of the last several years but has failed to even win a single Emmy in any category is just kind of a symptom of that. Like, I haven’t seen the episode in question, but I have a hard time believing that even the best modern Simpsons episode is better than “Free Churro,” yet the Simpsons won against it. And episodes like “Time’s Arrow,” “Escape from L.A.,” “Fish Out of Water,” and “That’s Too Much, Man,” weren’t even nominated except for Kristen Schaal’s vocal work in the last one (which was deserved). I can’t even begin to fathom why the show got consistently snubbed this badly.

    Pretty poor pickings this year.
