Who does Henry Cavill work for? This a strange question to ask about a guy who played Superman, Geralt of Rivia, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. With so many iconic characters under his belt, the last two months of career politicking left him out of one job, then out of another one. Now that Cavill is heading to Warhammer 40k, the producers of Witcher still have another season of the show to sell. Thankfully, the people that make Witcher haven’t abandoned the project and are pretty generous in the face of such a shake-up.

Speaking to EW, showrunner Lauren Hissrich explained how Geralt’s character would grow this season and what it means for the show in the future. Hissrich even goes as far as to call the Cavill’s final season a “heroic sendoff.”

“Geralt’s big turn is about giving up neutrality and doing anything that he has to do to get to Ciri,” Hissrich said. “And to me, it’s the most heroic sendoff that we could have, even though it wasn’t written to be that. Geralt has a new mission in mind when we come back to him in season 4. He’s a slightly different Geralt than we expected. Now, by the way, that’s an understatement.”

Last month, the Cavill quit his hit Netflix series The Witcher to pursue a return of his Superman. Black Adam kicked off a two-month-long victory lap for Cavill in the DC Universe, making good on that changing of the hierarchy of power business that the Rock was so taken with. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. Discovery did that without him and named James Gunn and Peter Safran the heads of DC Studios. Gunn and Safran set forth wiping the slate clean on the Snyder Verse, including, we found out yesterday, Black Adam. Most embarrassingly for Cavill, who announced his return to the big blue suit in October, the actor had to retract his announcement.

Meanwhile, everyone’s favorite Hemsworth, Liam, will take over for Cavill on Witcher. So while this is probably a stressful time for the Cavill household, at least the Hemsworths are picking up wins. Considering that Liam’s brother has been running around with the Avengers for a decade, it must be relieving to have a franchise on which Liam can hang his hat.

“He quit witcher to be superman”Except no one ever actually claimed that

Excuse me, sir, the INTERNET DISCOURSE claimed that. So, you know, it’s as good as confirmed.

I mean, the timing lines up, so it’s not completely unlikely. What’s less likely is that he quit The Witcher because he’s a purist to the source material and he’s pissed that the show is deviating from it. That’s a claim that deserves much more skepticism, since it lines up so neatly with neckbeard narratives about woke female creators.

And his take on Geralt is itself a deviation. Book Geralt isn’t at all like the impression of Doug Cockle’s video game version that he chose to do.

There is literally a million possible reasons why someone can leave a TV show. It’s important to embrace the uncertainty and know what you don’t know.

I’ve never read the books, but you don’t need to be source material devotee to see that the show’s a dumpster fire. With how long it must take to film a season, I can easily imagine Cavill thinking three attempts is more than enough for a product that’s clearly substandard.

    • cartagia-av says:

Yup. It was a reasonable assumption at the time, but with what we know now, if anything he left because of that Warhammer deal with Amazon.

Mentioning Hissrich is a surefire way to trigger all the lunatic witcher fanboys, much like mentioning Kathleen Kennedy to star wars chuds. These weirdos have a parasocial relationship with Cavill and think he’s their gamer buddy, and Hissrich is the big bad evil woman whose every utterance is some personal slight against them.

    • wertyp-av says:

It’s funny that they’re kind of the opposites. After Last Jedi, Star Wars under Kennedy turned into cookie cutter, safe, crowd pleasing mush drowning in fanservice. Only Andor finally changed that.
And Hissrich does not give a shit about fans of the Witcher, especially about people who read the books. Her team threw the books out of the window and are now producing straight up fanfiction nonsense.

Ahem, Luke is the best Hemsworth.

I know he’s just a dumb, old pediatric surgeon who barely has an eight-pack, but shouldn’t we at least consider Larry?

I would feel far less threatened as a man having that lad bumbling around onscreen! Great idea!

  • killa-k-av says:

Still shitty how WB treated him.

Witcher Season 4 can be considered the Gas Leak Year if Henry comes back for Season 5.

Season 3 is going to be bittersweet, like a sunflower seed soaked in hamster urine.

And this is where I bid adieu to The Witcher series as a whole after Season 3.Cavill was easily the best part. It was like the man was made for the role in the same way that Ian McKellen was made to be Gandalf. The continuity of losing the lead namesake of the series in favor of a Hemsworth feels like an internet troll’s joke made real… After they bungled the 1st season with really weird back and forth time jumping, and defocused everything in the 2nd season a bit by not having enough Cavill—while providing way too much background side-story nonsense with antagonist characters, which was followed by a huge amount of focus on Ciri… I was really hoping they’d course correct by the 3rd season and just let Cavill shine. But when news broke that he was leaving, I realized just how doomed the whole thing really was, and now its become a show that I can’t even recommend to people (which is starting to be a trend).I really don’t understand how the Witcher’s creators wouldn’t (or won’t) do anything in their power to stop Cavill from leaving, because it’s a guarantee death sentence that will leave the whole series unfished, unwatchable, and unrecommendable (just like the awful Cowboy Bebop live-action, and the very unfortunate Westworld). I’ll definitely watch season 3 and cheers with some ranch when it all ends—knowing full well that the show will inevitably suck from there on. The dude’s definitely gonna be missed as Kal-el and Geralt, arguably the best roles that he was ever made to fill.So everyone pour one out for my man Henny C, the only man man enough to instantly grow a beard after cocking his biceps. *cheers*

Netflix and WB both done my boy dirty. As others have mentioned, both Superman and Geralt were roles that Cavill was built (literally) to play, and it’s a shame to see them fizzle out because of…well, I won’t speculate.Thankfully Cavill (with help from his girlfriend) had enough clout to secure the Warhammer deal with Amazon. Here’s to hoping someone with passion behind the helm can create something interesting and engaging, even to people who aren’t already fans of the lore.

      • captain-impulse-av says:

I mean, it’s not outside the realm of possibility. No one gets to be that good looking AND talented at the same time…right? Right?!
