The end of year is a time for spending precious moments with family, eating delicious home-cooked food, making resolutions… and trying to remember what the hell happened in the world over the past 12 months.

By the time the holidays roll around, it can be a real challenge to recall who was in the news for what and when—but that’s where The A.V. Club’s list of 2021’s top newsmakers comes in.

From Jason Sudeikis to Chrissy Teigen to Lil Nas X to Kathryn Hahn, we’ve compiled a look back at the A-list names who had a huge 2021… for better or for worse.

After nearly six years without so much as a one-off single, Adele made her triumphant return in 2021 with her fourth studio album, . She finalized her divorce in 2020, and anticipation grew for another heartbreak album from the Queen Of Teary Ballads. Her comeback is the biggest news about the music superstar this year—but that’s all Adele really needs. Add in an interview with Oprah, , and a , and she’s pretty much set for music domination. it has truly been a stupid year for news

Spears, Rae, Hahn and Lil Nas are all we need.

Using the “Best of…” umbrella for this slideshow is a choice. Armie Hammer: Best at Sexual Assault and Having a Cannibal Fetish
Chrissy Teigen: Best at Cyberbullying Despite the Fact that You Thought She Was One of the “Good Ones.” Machine Gun Kelly: Best at Dating Megan Fox
Morgan Wallen: Best at Being RacistJoe Rogan: Best at Getting a Bunch of People Killed (Misinformation Category)Travis Scott: Best at Getting a Bunch of People Killed (Trampling Category)Like, I know the AV Club has been chasing the gossip rag bullshit for some time now (prompting one to wonder why we need both Jezebel and AV Club at this point) but it’s weird seeing it celebrating that fact. “The AV Club salutes the celebrities who bravely entertained and titillated us by being awful.”

Taylor Swift: Best at thoroughly torching some poor guy over a 10 year-old relationship (granted she’s owned this category for most of those 10 years, so no surprise)But I’d have a hard time arguing these weren’t some of the biggest entertainment industry newsmakers of the year, it just was frequently for awful reasons.

I don’t know about “Best” – “Most Significant”, maybe?

      • kitschkat-av says:

Eh, she just re-released a song that fans have speculated is about him. There’s nothing particularly specific in it, and it’s news articles like this that keep bringing it up. Leonard Cohen wrote constantly about the women in his life, and felt perfectly comfortable being bitingly critical about them on occasion – aren’t all songwriters entitled to that?

        • bcfred2-av says:

I’m hardly some swiftie who takes her side on every previous relationship. I just think it’s funny that Gyllenhaal is almost certainly “OH COME ON!” over something that supposedly involved him 10 years ago. I feel like her breakups are far more famous than her relationships since she uses them for such fuel in her songwriting.
I will say I thought the SNL performance was pretty damn epic.

To be fair, it’s not “The Best”, it’s “The Biggest Newsmakers” — and it’s hard to deny that finding out Armie Hammer would love to have you for dinner is a story!

No Dave Chappelle, huh? OK then!

Surprised that Chapelle wasn’t on the list

Machine Gun Kelly may now be famous for dating Megan Fox, but he’ll always be the guy that Kevin Owens powerbombed off the stage to me.

Kanye’s Yeezy Slide? What did he open an amusement park?

  • buh-lurredlines-av says:

Everyone whose name is in the byline should be fired and made to work in restaurant service.

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

Morgan Wallen really shouldn’t need to use the n-word. I should think that mullet tells us everything we need to know how he feels about not-white folks.

    Slideshows are frustrating.

  • tsalmothyendi-av says:

Came here (without bothering with the slideshow) to complain about bullshit “best of” things on November 30 (bad enough the second half of December is filled with them, but pretending art doesn’t happen in an entire month instead of just acknowledging staff take vacations is silly), but based on the comments, the list also sounds pretty awful.

    • usernamechecks0ut-av says:

they complained about Christmas coming too soon following Halloween yet there cutting the year a month short by starting the endless “best of’ slideshows we usually get shoved in our face the following year.

I’m neurodivergent so I fully get that I don’t seen things the same way that most do, but I never really got or liked Chrissy Teigen’s social media thing, even before those scandals. There’s something about that eternal, heavily constructed snarkiness that just came off as being really mean and weird.

  • halolds-av says:

Of all of these, the Morgan Wallen thing is the only one that really bugged me. The rest are for the most part dipshits just doing what you would expect. But his album went from also-ran to best seller like the next day. That one says an awful lot about our fellow Americans.

am i doing Slideshows wrong, cos mine starts at 2…

  • bcfred2-av says:

Is there a woman who is more of a chameleon than Kathryn Hahn? She is convincingly sexy as hell, dowdy middle-aged, hot mess, and seemingly hasn’t aged since I first saw her in Step Brothers. She’s anchored on the “famous people I want to have a drink with” list.
