Your favorite Pokémon prepare for battle in latest Detective Pikachu trailer

Aux Features Pokémon

The first trailer for Detective Pikachu was light on the Pokémon cameos, heavy on the whole Ryan Reynolds-is-voicing-the-cute-and-lovable-yellow-fluff-ball thing. After a few months, the shock of a gruff and no-bullshit Reynolds as a caffeine-addicted Pikachu has mostly sunk in, though admittedly still feels weird as fuck that Pokémon: Detective Pikachu starring Ryan Reynolds is an actual movie coming out in 2019. But here we are, so why not get a peek at some Pokémon battles already?

While Pokémon diehards might have felt a little disgruntled by the initial footage, the latest trailer is full of more monsters that are both straight-up disturbing and super cute and cuddly. Ludicolo pops up as an adorably weird bartender, and Snorlax snoozes away on a sidewalk while Machamp seems to be putting his multiple arms to use as a traffic cop. Snubbull, Cubone, Eevee, and Lickitung with his long nasty tongue also make appearances. And then there’s Charizard, who bolts into a ring to battle a terrified Pikachu, and a scary looking Mewtwo. Take a look at the new poster to spot even more Pokémon easter eggs.

With Detective Pikachu, you get both a noir mystery as Tim (Justice Smith) searches for his missing father with Pikachu’s help, and an excuse to watch Pokémon duke it out in live-action. Experience Pokémon: Detective Pikachu in all its bizarre, cute glory when it hits theaters May 10.

I was already excited for this movie, and the latest trailer only increased my hype. I’m loving the real-world Pokemon designs (have you seen the shoebill stork? Earth has its own uncomfortable uncanny valley animals IRL). They seem to know how to incorporate the Pokemon into visual jokes (Mr Mime is doing a lot here, but even outside of his necessary visual humor, there’s a lot of good non-dialogue gags). My one worry is that the CGI, as usual, looks a bit weightless, specifically when Pikachu is tailwhipping Tim while P is on the bar (this part didn’t work much for me since it didn’t read as real).

Okay a movie just struck me and I have nothing other than the title – “Uncomfortable Valley Girl”.Yes, this response has nothing to do with your post other than, heck yeah, I wanna see this movie too.

That sounds like a great movie haha, and it wasn’t until your comment that I realized I meant uncanny and not uncomfortable >.>

Yeah, I’m hoping they can fix up the CG issues a bit more before release, if it’s not too late for whatever needs to be done, because it took a few hits for me to even notice what was happening.

But also GROWLITHES. PLURAL. ALL THE GOOD PUPPIES.

Mewtwo running around means that the first Pokemon movie is canon in this movie which means something

Picturing Mewtwo as a Nick Fury-type in the Pokemon Extended Universe

Or, since they’re remaking it in CGI for this year’s anime movie (and the only writer listed so far has been dead for decade, so at the moment seems like a straight remake), it is actually in the same continuity as that one.

Ah Pokémon the first movie with its message of “Pokémon are not suppose to fight…..like this”.

The worst part of this trailer is the end.MAY 10!Come on!

Look at his clue room! Look at him psyching himself up to battle!I love everything about this trailer.

Does anyone remember the movie from 2013 based on the artwork Murakami (Kanye West’s Graduation artwork) Jellyfish Eyes? This movie looks exactly like that one except with a fun Noir twist. The CGI in the Pokemon movie only looks of a slightly higher quality:

Not liking the size of Snorlax, hoping for more big lazy Snorlaxes.

Two things.1) I love that they’re showing off a lot of post-Gen 1 Pokémon. Ludicolo was great, Aipom was scary as hell, and those statues of Dialga, Palkia, and Arceus behind Flareon (the best Eeveelution) are great.2) Detective Pikachu using Volt Tackle was great, but the fact that they’re using the anime’s version rather than the games’ or Smash’s, makes me happy beyond belief.

    Thunderbolt and Volt Tackle. NICE.

  • wookietim-av says:

Okay, I give up – I wanna see this movie officially more than Avengers.

Poké Floats: Good enough for Hollywood, not good enough for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I’m outraged.

  • luisxromero-av says:

Wait, I just realized something. Is this the first Pokemon piece of media that’s set in what I assume is the equivalent of America? We know that Kanto and some of the other regions from the game are based on Japanese regions, and X & Y are set in (loosely) France, while Sun and Moon in Pacific islands.

    • jeffreywinger-av says:

Black and White were in New York/New Jersey, and Sun and Moon were specifically Hawaii. And Orre from the Gamecube games was Arizona, I believe. Hello my name is Bucky and I know too much about Pokemon geography.

  • formerly-cubone-libre-av says:

And what exactly makes you think we have a favorite Pokemon?

  • mikosquiz-av says:

So what percentage of this movie is going to be gags about shidding and farding? Like 30%?

  • haikuwarrior-av says:

Do you guys ever get tired of writing the same thing? Are the lines about how crazy this concept is just part of a template now?

  • nilus-av says:

I love that Pokémon fighting in the “real world” look like they happen in dog fighting cages.
