As of this morning, it’s looking more and more likely that former Vice President Joe Biden will be dropping the “former Vice” from his title. And, since we’re all latchkey kids who tend to process shit through pop culture, it was only a matter of time before people began comparing the downfall of Donald Trump’s reign to something from the Star Wars universe.

One notable instance came from the Biden campaign’s digital director, Rob Flaherty, who tweeted out a GIF of the second Death Star exploding as the Millennium Falcon flies away triumphantly at the end of Return Of The Jedi. This was around 8 a.m. CT, shortly after Biden pulled ahead of Trump in Pennsylvania.

Commonplace as it is on social media to see genre epics used as metaphors for political victory, Flaherty’s tweet is an instance of expert trolling toward former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale. Back in May, Parscale made a Star Wars comparison of his own—one that was a lot more troubling.

Of course, Twitter users began responding in full to Flaherty’s zinger with their own Star Wars tweets that ranged from admittedly corny…

…to elitist and nerdy…

…to refreshingly sober.

Now, as we wait for the final word to roll in, let’s watch The Mandalorian.

Trump’s “stand by” quote reminded me of the guy on the Death Star who said “stand by” twice before it blew up.

I keep thinking someone in the White House is saying, “Evacuate? In our moment of triumph? I think you overestimate their chances.”

  • dirtside-av says:

There’s real humor in the notion that the Trump campaign used the Death Star as a metaphor for their efforts, apparently forgetting that every single version of the Death Star or similar planetary superweapons were all destroyed at the end of their respective movies.

    • kate-monday-av says:

It also seems like they’re saying the quiet part out loud when they openly identify as the evil empire.  Or maybe they were confused about who most people identify with in those movies.

      • dwarfandpliers-av says:

I’m pretty sure they’d say “evil” is all about perspective, but for Trump and the GOP (sorry, “Trumpists”) it’s all about power. Imagine if Dipshit had the power to choke people with the Force. Who the fuck would be left in DC right now? Who would be left in his family (besides Ivanka obviously)? But hey, strong leadership is all about pushing aside compassion and humanity in order to torment those pesky vulnerable minorities that always seem to be on the verge of overtaking you, right?

        • kate-monday-av says:

It just reminds me of that running joke in How I Met Your Mother where Neil Patrick Harris’s character had misinterpreted who the good vs bad guys were in every 80’s movie.

      • mdiller64-av says:

They probably identify with whichever movie character has the most guns.

      • laurenceq-av says:

Just like the Death Star, Trump’s presidency was finally destroyed by the good guys, but only after countless innocent people died first.

    • dwarfandpliers-av says:

and of course that the Death Star and its sequel were both controlled by evil assholes, one of whom looked like death warmed over (looking at you Mitch McFuckhead).

    • bc222-av says:

And of course it’ll be super fitting that instead of taking this opportunity to rid themselves of Trumpism, the Republicans are just going to go Death Star II in 2024.

    • andrewbare29-av says:

These are the same folks who thought it was the height of bad-ass cleverness to turn Trump into Thanos, using a scene that ends with Thanos being out-smarted and vanquished forever.

      • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I can honestly see Trump admiring Thanos in a genuine, unironic way. Fuck, Donald would probably yeet any of his kids of the side of Vormir in a heartbeat if it would get him to 270 seats.

The one, and maybe actually the only thing, chuds are great at is a self-own.

    • wmohare-av says:

Then brought back to inflict even more damage over and over and over again

    • dremiliolizardo-av says:

Also, that they were the bad guys.

    • weedlord420-av says:

It is unfortunately apt that they (or at least almost all of them, I don’t think the second Death Star did anything did it? My memory’s fuzzy) did significant damage to the universe as a whole.

    • nilus-av says:

Plus the whole point that they were super weapons built by fascists. Why would you want to compare yourself to the bad guys like that

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

And both Death Stars were bloated, gargantuan mechanisms that were fundamentally weak and easily destroyed once their vulnerabilities were discovered.

    • cheboludo-av says:

And the Death Star is the creation of the autocratic emperor that killed the galazy’s democracy with thunderous applause.

    • uyarndog-av says:

Yep, they were all one-and-done, just like this administration.

  • happyinparaguay-av says:

And as we all know, the bad guys in Star Wars accepted their defeat graciously and never tried to build another Death Star.

  • dwarfandpliers-av says:

just the mere possibility that this might be a callback to an obnoxious tweet from SIX months ago deserves all the chefs kisses. I truly hope this is a sign that the Biden administration will troll Dipshit from time to time just for laughs.  There is just SO much meat on that bone, it would be wasteful not to.

    • ipzilla-av says:

My fervent hope for the Biden administration is the opposite – that Biden never once refers to Trump by name, and never responds to any of the blizzard of sour tweets he doubtless buries America in.

      • dwarfandpliers-av says:

I’m on the fence about this…on one hand I am overjoyed at the prospect of never hearing or seeing Dipshit again except his tweets, which I don’t follow but I’m sure the media will breathlessly report anyway. On the other, when (if) a GOP-controlled Senate obstructs every thing Biden does just in the name of undoing damage, I think he’s obligated to point out what he’s doing and who caused the damage. It won’t turn all the cultists but with Dipshit out of office I think a few might snap out of their cult trances, and they need to be reached. Doing the usual Democratic thing of soldiering on quietly and undoing the Republican damage from the last administration (while the GOP and Fox News sit on the sidelines and criticize and mock their efforts) should NOT be an option.

        • ipzilla-av says:

The Senate Republicans are going to have to be in 100% lockstep to be properly obstructionist, and I’m hoping for a wave of recrimination and back-biting to fracture the party. Trump’s going to be out there lobbing bombs at everyone he thinks let him down, while the adults try to rescue the remains of the party.

          • dwarfandpliers-av says:

I think before the election Trump still had ~90% favorability among GOP voters so it’s like an Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader situation, if Anakin were a dickhead to begin with (which in retrospect in many ways he was). They are the Party of Trump, even Laura Ingraham was crowing about it on Fox after the election, so I’d be shocked if they weren’t in total lockstep, esp. with Cocaine Mitch still involved. I hope the Lincoln Republicans stay on the scene and continue to return fire against Trump and the GOP on behalf of the Democrats but they are fighting an uphill battle and once their funding peters out they may just decide to cut bait.  The only hope right now to get anything done is for Stacey Abrams to pull another miracle out of her ass and swing 2 Senate seats to Democrats in Georgia.

        • radarskiy-av says:

“who caused the damage.”That would be Mitch McConnell.
Trump thrives on attention; McConnell scurries in the dark. They’re hurt most when that is reversed.

      • admnaismith-av says:

Maybe, but as far as i’m concerned Biden is free to refer to Drumpf by subpoena or indictment, if not by name.

  • murrychang-av says:

“For nearly three years we have been building a juggernaut campaign (Death Star). It is firing on all cylinders. Data, Digital, TV, Political, Surrogates, Coalitions, etc.”

  • justsomerandoontheinternet-av says:

One down, only two more Death Stars to go…

Oh hell yeah! They so gotta do a voting episode as well as the obligatory “The Gang Gets Quarantined Again.”Honestly, there’s been a ton of potential Sunny fodder this year.
