Marvel Studios has announced that its latest movie, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, will be arriving on Disney+ later on June 22. The sequel to 2016's Doctor Strange hit theaters on May 6.

This clocks in at just slightly longer than the 45-day theatrical exclusive window that has been used for other more recent feature-length installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings and Eternals. Back in July 2021, Black Widow was released as a premium add-on for Disney+ on the same day it premiered in theaters.

While Spider-Man: No Way Home preceded Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, it was distributed by Sony rather than Disney and is currently only available for purchase or rental. It is not included on any streaming services yet.

Though a 90-day theatrical window has historically been the industry standard, the continuing pandemic has led studios to make movies available at home sooner, as many audiences have not resumed their 2019 viewing habits. While Multiverse Of Madness still raked in a considerable haul at the box office, its release date coincided with a significant uptick in infection rates in many markets.

Over the past couple of years, Disney sent Soul, Luca, and Turning Red directly to streaming. On June 17, Lightyear will be the first Pixar title to get a wide theatrical debut since Onward.

Warner Bros. made all of its 2021 releases simultaneously available in theaters and on HBO Max. The studio has since moved to a 45-day window.

Paramount films have been getting a 45-day run in cinemas before going to Paramount+, though the recently released Top Gun: Maverick is set to be a theater exclusive for an eye-watering 120 days. (Big Movie. Big Screen.)

June 22 is a Wednesday, meaning Multiverse Of Madness will hit Disney+ on the same day as a new episode of Ms. Marvel. Let the wild speculation about how the two MCU properties will cross over begin!

It’s still playing as the second movie on the second screen behind Bob’s Burgers this weekend at the drive in too, crazy!

I miss our local drive-in, Cascade. It closed at the end 2019 because the property owner wanted to sell the land. They had a huge going out business sale where they sold off all the equipment and such because they thought they were done. 5 months later apperently the land owner was BEGGING them to come back because the pandemic killed the land deal they had and the city was like “Why did we help them close this down”. Last year they announced they were going to reopen but it still has not happened. Rumor is the infrastructure was in bad shape as it is and I think the screen needs to be rebuilt, plus all the projection equipment needs to be rebought.  People were eager with lockdown but now that everyone is just ignoring Covid, I wonder if it will ever reopen.

I’m lucky to live within half an hour of 3 drive-ins, including
http://www.shankweilers.com/https://www.beckysdi.com/Last time I was to Shankweilers was years ago and they still had the speakers that you could mount on your window. Sorry yours is closed though, I’ve seen so many movies at the drive in over the years I would really miss it if they all shut down. I hope it reopens soon but the projection equipment is expensive as hell and there are standards for screen brightness these days if you want to have first run movies. The third drive in near me had a problem with both a while back and now only shows old movies:https://www.mahoningdit.com/

I thought there was a good hour or so in this movie. It’s something I would skip around to watch various moments.

I usually watch Marvel movies twice so I’ll catch it again, it’s not too long and I liked the vast majority of it.Then again I am fully here for multiversal shenanigans, I understand a lot of people aren’t into that kind of thing but it’s specifically my bag.

I will rewatch Marvel movies I really like as a comfort food thing but Doctor Strange 2 will probably get a second watch when it hits home release and then probably just get watched if I am running the series(which has become kinda a yearly thing my sons and I do over the Christmas season). It was not the worse Marvel movie but not one of my favorites. The big question for this winter is if we watch the Eternals at all.  If any other MCU movies this year reference it, I feel like we probably should but the no one in my family enjoyed it.   Also not sure if we will try to slot in the shows into our stupid viewing marathon.  I wish they would take a few years off from making new Marvel content 🙂

I’m just amazed that mainstream movies that cost upwards of $100 million damn dollars to make are going this ‘big concept’. If you’d told me when Iron Man came out that they’d be doing Infinity Gauntlet in 10 years and Kang as the big bad after that, I would have said you were crazy.
Eternals was a beautiful slog, I wish it was better but the script was sooo bland.

        • bigal6ft6-av says:

Eternals mid-credits stinger with Starfox and Pip felt like a Guardians of the Galaxy tee-up because A) incongruously wacky tonally with the rest of the flick B) it ended with an also incongruously with the rest of the flick classic rock “feels like the first time” needle drop

          • nilus-av says:

Yeah but it also looked so damn awful. I have not idea how anyone let that get on screen.

“Though a 90-day theatrical window has historically been the industry standard”

90 days was not EVER the standard. That’s fucking ridiculous. When has a July blockbuster been on pay tv in October?

  • bigal6ft6-av says:

120 Day theatrical exclusive for Top Gun 2? Geezus, Tom, how the hell did he pull that one off, that’s positively archaic at this point. It’s a solid movie but I can’t see it playing until freakin September, that’s dumb.

    • milligna000-av says:

He did one of his soggy rat fake chuckles and then abruptly switched into a cold stare, firing off his Intention Beams to get his way as per usual. Very upstat.

    • soylent-gr33n-av says:

He and Miscavige probably have pictures that some Paramount execs don’t want made public.

    • toolatenick-av says:

Agreed, it seems like a silly amount of time. I liked the movie but I’d be incredibly surprised if you could even find a showing at your average theater in August to say nothing of September.

    • anthonypirtle-av says:

He has spent years gaining as much control as possible over every aspect of the films he makes, and more power to him, if that’s what he wants.

      • bigal6ft6-av says:

Lovely sentiment but how is anyone going to watch it in August or September if Cruise wants people to see it? That’s wayyyyy too long and it’ll be turfed from theatres by then, especially considering that Paramount has adapted a 45 day window. Nolan had to negotiate a 90 day theatrical exclusive for his next movie with Universal and that’s a month longer than Top Gun 2!(Probably Cruse deluded himself into thinking that Top Gun 2 will Save Theatrical so decided it’ll be that all summer. Paramount went along because too much of a pain in the ass to convince him otherwise)

  • rogueindy-av says:

I’m still getting over the fact they pretty much snuck an Evil Dead film into the MCU.

    • giantclaw-av says:

Yes! And the AVClub review pretty much shit the bed, not liking Raimi spreading his magic across a Marvel film. Fuck that shit, I loved it!

      • nilus-av says:

I think the movie was a bit of a mess, but a fun mess.    But I suspect much of the mess was caused by the studio not letting Raimi go full Raimi.  The stuff that is clearly his works well if you are a Raimi fan.  The fact that we see a full on deadite Doctor Strange is worth the price of admission.
