The official teaser for Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness is here. Fans who’ve already seen Spider-Man: No Way Home and sat through all the credits will recognize it, since Marvel decided to surprise debut it after the movie.

The new film picks up right where No Way Home left off. And now, it appears that Doctor Strange will have to face some consequences for his actions. In the trailer, a voice says, “Your desecration of reality will not go unpunished.”

Quick shots in the trailer show Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer walking down the aisle at her wedding, Benedict Wong’s Wong in some serious danger— and there’s Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, making her Marvel debut in a costume very much like her comics counterpart’s costume. Chiwetel Ejiofor also appears, reprising his role as Karl Mordo.

In the footage, Doctor Strange seeks out Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). Wanda thinks he wants to talk about the events of WandaVision (that whole hypnotizing and torturing a town thing), but he asks her for help instead. Other shots show her in full costume casting spells.

“The greatest threat to our universe is you,” someone tells Strange. He doesn’t seem to buy it.

It’s unclear how this movie’s multiverse hijinks will line up with what was unleashed in the Loki Disney+ series. At the end of that show Sylvie killed “He Who Remains,” ending the TVA and unleashing variants across all timelines.

It’s also possible that the events of Marvel’s What If…?where a Dr. Strange in a different timeline who loses Christine goes mad trying to save her—will intersect with this film somehow.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness will be released in theaters on May 6, 2022. The movie is directed by Sam Raimi.

HELLO I AM HERE FOR THE MULTIVERSE SHENANIGANS PLEASE AND THANK YOU!

  • usernamechecks0ut-av says:

oh boy, does this mean you’ll now pick apart any tiny new detail and try and figure out the whole plot up until release day and then pretend like spoilers are the devil?

  • geormajesty-av says:

Will this trailer spoil No Way Home? I’m assuming yes.

    • suckadick59595-av says:

no not really. the biggest tie-in is some v/o at the start that i believe was also in the NWH trailer.

    • itskduff-av says:

It doesn’t really spoil anything that wasn’t already in the spiderman trailer.

    • yesidrivea240-av says:

It does not. The first 15 seconds have one line from No Way Home that doesn’t spoil anything if you’ve seen any of the No Way Home trailers. Skip to 20 seconds for the start of the actual trailer and to avoid that line.Watch away!

    • ooklathemok3994-av says:

It didn’t mention that Spider-Man dies at the end of No Way Home so you’re good on spoilers.

  • sarcastro7-av says:

I still just love that someone as seemingly badass as a serious Sorceror named MORDO is actually “Karl.”

  • coolgameguy-av says:

Admittedly, it’s just a trailer, but I was hoping to see some Sam Raimi ‘flourish’ here. It kind of just looks like your standard Marvel movie.

    • suckadick59595-av says:

yeah, nothing about it screams Raimi. I’m hoping it turns out differently.

      • dreadpirateroberts-ayw-av says:

I am thinking they are trying to make it seem more like your typical Marvel movie for the trailer as they get people interested, but some of those scenes also seem like a bit more of a darker horror vibe. Will have to wait and see what the actual product is.

        • flinderbahn-av says:

Don’t forget, Raimi isn’t just the Evil Dead guy, he’s also the Spider-Man guy…and they weren’t especially dark

          • bcfred2-av says:

Not dark, true, but he definitely used his trademark close zooms and queasy angles with Dafoe / Goblin.

          • cjob3-av says:

Nothing in the trailer for Spider-Man 1 screamed ‘auteur director.’

          • professorgizmo-av says:

Not true at all. What about the masterful operating theatre scene in Spiderman 2? So many classic Raimi horror moments in that.

    • nextchamp-av says:

It looks REALLY bland for a Raimi movie. And also for a movie that’s suppose to be about this mythical wizard going through other dimensions. I know Disney/MCU has an aesthetic but…is it that fucking hard?

      • lilnapoleon24-av says:

“is it that hard?” The whole point of the mcu is maximizing profit and minimizing risk, as long as the mcu exists the directors of the individual movies will be interchangable

      • cjob3-av says:

IDK Check out the first trailer for Spider-Man and tell me it looks like a Sam Raimi movie.

    • jessiewiek-av says:

I don’t know. It’s not a lot to judge from, but the bit with the star (I’m assuming America’s power?) looked pretty Raimi to me. I guess there’s nothing there that could ONLY be him, but it doesn’t look to me like something the Russos or Joss Whedon directed.

    • refinedbean-av says:

      FLOURISH

    • genejenkinson-av says:

Most of the recent Marvel trailers are only footage from like the first 20 mins. I imagine they’re saving a lot of stuff for the movie.

      • tobias-lehigh-nagy-av says:

I don’t remember the trailer for Spider-Man 2, but I’m pretty sure it didn’t show much, if anything, of the most Raimi-ish thing in any of his Spider-Man movies, which was the scene where Doc Ock’s arms horrifically murder everyone in the operating room.

    • adamtrevorjackson-av says:

i think they’re still in the process of doing 6 weeks of reshoots. wouldn’t be surprised if there isn’t a lot to show yet.

    • hankdolworth-av says:

The trailer literally has the main character facing off against an evil, quippy version of himself….and people complain they can’t see the Sam Raimi in it? (Maybe they just need to rewatch the Evil Dead trilogy…)

    • mshep-av says:

I’m old enough to remember getting hyped for Raimi’s Spider-Man before it came out, and guys, the trailers for Spider-Man didn’t have a lot of Raimi’s flourishes either. He’s not exactly a style over substance guy. His seasick camera pushes and dolly zooms and whatnot typically mark a shift in tone within a scene, which is what makes them so effective. Nobody does it better, but it’s not really going to register in a trailer.

    • cjob3-av says:

The very first shot of the tea candles blowing out, his reflection in the watch face, I’m seeing some Raimi attention to detail. Check out the first trailer for Spider-Man and see if it looks like classic Sam Raimi. Things didn’t get really Raimi til the hospital scene in Spider-Man 2.

    • jrobie-av says:

Pretty sure I saw Strange casting some tentacle vines.

    • builtforgreed-av says:

Really? I was hit almost immediately with the Raimi-ness when the camera started panning through the wreckage of the Sanctum Sanctorum, complete with crazily creaking pieces of timber á là Evil Dead II.Of course, I’ve probably seen those movies way too many times, so they’re lodged in the brain, but I say have some hope.

    • peon21-av says:

I’m sure they’re saving his “young woman panic-screams directly into the lens” shot for the Superbowl ad or something.

    • mythicfox-av says:

Damn near every one of these looks like that in the first trailer, even if the final movie winds up looking very different (Guardians of the Galaxy in particular comes to mind).

    • endymion421-av says:

Maybe they’ll have Bruce Campbell in a scene-stealing role. Now that is very Raimi.

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I thought there was some shots that were extreme close ups of random objects etc in the trailer that displayed experience from the director in the horror genre. It doesn’t need to be much more Raimi than that for me.

  • 000-1-av says:

So a direct follow up to his actions in Spiderman . Wanda gets a pass? Really ?

  • marshalgrover-av says:

I think like a year ago it was this and Ant-Man/Wasp were the only upcoming MCU movies I was actually looking forward to. All the rest this year were OK, but Spider-Man just really reinvigorated me on these.

  • hiemoth-av says:

Considering how the What-If story ended, I can’t see this interlinking with that. Having written that, it is weird how they are hitting the same beat in two similar Multiverse stories within such a short time frame.Still, looking forward to Evil!Strange and what Cumberbatch will do with it.

    • sarcastro7-av says:

Given the subject and the tease of an alternate Strange (that may or may not be the one we’ve already seen), I’m guessing that we’ll see some form of alternate Wanda as well.

      • cosmicghostrider-av says:

It’s explained in WandaVision that Wanda is a Nexus being and therefore the same across the Multiverse.

        • cosmicghostrider-av says:

Which is probably also gonna come into play here. I’m not sure how but I can’t imagine that’ll be mentioned and dropped in this, the multiverse film.

        • sarcastro7-av says:

I don’t think that’s what they said or meant there, but I could be misremembering.

    • stegrelo-av says:

I gave up on What If? half way through the party Thor episode. Or, rather, I got called away in the middle of that episode and I never went back to finish it because I didn’t really care. I should probably watch the rest since there isn’t that much more to go. But still, that show was pretty terrible.

    • laurenceq-av says:

How can there be an alt-universe evil Dr. Strange?  The guy already has a goatee.

  • laserface1242-av says:

Of course said consequences involving Strange facing his greatest foe: Benjamin Franklin!

  • psychopirate-av says:

This looks fantastic. I imagine the Raimi horror stuff will largely be saved for the actual movie, and wouldn’t have been included in the trailer that debuted at the end of Spider-Man.

  • haodraws-av says:

Lots of red herrings and misdirections here. Sneaky, Marvel.

  • anthonypirtle-av says:

Doctor Strange: It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad Multiverse

  • ryanlohner-av says:

It’s quite a relief to see that, at least at the start, Wanda isn’t just randomly evil in this movie “because destiny.” I was pretty worried about that after Wandavision.

    • dr-memory-av says:

Although it does continue the through-line of “we’re just gonna gloss over the time you mind-raped an entire city for like a month” from the series so you can’t accuse them of not paying attention to their own continuity.

    • haodraws-av says:

If anything, it’s that book she was skimming through at the end of Wandavision that’s gonna make her do bad things. Not some pishposh “destiny” thing.

  • hewhoiscallediam-av says:

    Aw yeah. MFing Shuma Gorath.

  • bluwacky-av says:

Will they give Rachel McAdams something useful to do? She’s such a great actress, and Christine was… mostly superfluous other than as an outlet for Strange’s pain in the first film (which I enjoyed overall). If she’s just in a few brief “what if” moments I will be annoyed (although I can also appreciate that maybe that’s exactly what she might want …)

    • marshalgrover-av says:

She did kinda save his life at some point.

      • bluwacky-av says:

I had forgotten about that bit, to be honest. I did remember Strange having an astral projection fight with someone while she was trying to do it, though.

    • hankdolworth-av says:

I really hope they don’t kill her off in this one….spoilers for anyone who hasn’t seen the RDJ Sherlock Holmes sequel.

      • laurenceq-av says:

That wouldn’t have been a spoiler had you not gone out of your way to randomly and needlessly drop an unrelated spoiler.

      • jpfilmmaker-av says:

I’m sure you’re just trolling, but it’s not a spoiler if you bring it up out of absolutely nowhere… it’s just being an asshole.

    • kbroxmysox2-av says:

There is an image of her, alongside America Chavez, wearing something a bit like a sorcerer outfit, so she might play an alternate universe Christine(my guess, the reverse of What If..she lost strange in that car accident and sought magic to bring him back)…or maybe MCU Christine discovers some magic, herself. My guess, either way, she’ll end up some version of Clea(who is getting a push in the comics atm)

    • hulk6785-av says:

I hope we get to see the alternate Christine who survived the car crash in the What If…? episode instead of Strange and became a sorcerer.

    • haodraws-av says:

Christine(or a version of her) is in that scene in the trailer where Strange opens a door into a purple-tinted space.

  • BlahBlahBlahXXX-av says:

I love that comic book movies are giving us two cosmic starfishes in as many years.

  • rafterman00-av says:

I’m starting to really dig the Dr. Strange character. I liked the movie, but I wasn’t a huge fan until Dr. Strange started interacting with other characters in the MCU.

  • putusernamehere-av says:

This means they’re gonna make a Shuma Gorath action figure, and that’s cool as hell.

    • drips-av says:

Yeah but it’ll probably be one of those “build-a-figure” deals where you gotta buy like a half dozen other characters to get all the pieces.

      • orangewaxlion-av says:

The build a figure for the upcoming Marvel Legends for the movie is actually some other character but I’m not sure if revealing it is a movie spoiler. There’s a Lego set that looks like Shuma Gorath, but for whatever reason the name is some other Marvel one eyed green tentacle creature.

        • haodraws-av says:

Wouldn’t be the first time that the MCU puts a character’s name on a character that’s obviously based on yet another character.

    • tjsproblemsolvers-av says:

      A “build-a-figure” most likely.

  • luisxromero-av says:

Another thing I seemed to notice. There’s a figure tumbling through the mirror dimension (realities?) with long white hair. Doesn’t look like Mordo and that’s certainly not strange. Return of Kaecilius?

  • nycpaul-av says:

I wonder how long it takes Dr. Strange to get his hair to do that before he leaves for the office.

    • bcfred2-av says:

I have to think he wakes up looking like that.I wonder more about the looks he gets walking around town dressed as he is.

    • gildie-av says:

“Greater Coif” is only a 3rd level spell, it’s no big deal when you’re a wizard. Getting that stupid facial hair right, on the other hand, takes the better part of the morning.

      • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I like how with each film his goutee is slowly sliding up his cheekbones more and more I can only assume he’ll just have the Tony Stark beard at some point. I like in some of the newer comics he has a full beard. That would be fun.

  • wrecksracer-av says:

This trailer and the latest Spiderman film are the first times I’ve noticed Dr. Strange’s hair piece…..either that or a real bad dye job. Anyway…..I’m still having issues with the premise that Dr. Strange would actually cast this spell. Sure, he joked with Wong about a party they made everyone forget. And yeah, Peter kept bothering him while he was doing the spell. Would Strange really not understand the ramifications? He lets a teenager talk him into potentially destroying the universe? I know…..they had to have something set up the next 6-10 films. It seems a little flimsy.

    • khalleron-av says:

Strange is an arrogant asshole. Anything an arrogant asshole would do, Strange would do.

He’s Michael Burnham and Poe Dameron.

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

      SPOILER:

In No Way Home they say that Wong is actually the Sorcerer Supreme now which is contrary to the comics. So I guess that takes a bit of pressure off the MCU doctor strange. Wong does tell him not to cast it.

  • kinjacaffeinespider-av says:

Doctor Strange faces some consequences for wearing his fancy cape to the Brooklyn Swap Meet.

  • dereader-av says:

I guess Wanda’s Sokovian accent is really gone after Wandavision.

  • djclawson-av says:

Can they just make a movie about Wong already?

  • professorgizmo-av says:

Well I’m glad this movie is addressing one of the more bizarre conceits of No Way Home, which was Strange repeatedly and heavily guilting Peter about the spell that he botched himself. Seriously, the whole “look what you made me do” vibe is incredibly tone-deaf in 2021. I get that Strange is a bit of a dick, but he was downright unpleasant in NWH. With great power comes great responsibility Stephen, and it wasn’t the 18-year old supertwink who was responsible for tearing apart reality, it was you!

  • whoisanonymous37-av says:

Does anyone else hate Cumberbatch’s accent when he plays Doctor Strange?I mean, it’s not like the one he did for The Power of the Dog, where it’s set far enough in the past that you can imagine that it’s how a person like that might have actually talked.
I really wish Marvel had decided to make the character British and have Cumberbatch use his regular speaking voice. It would have been much less distracting that his shitty attempt at an American accent.

    • petefwilliams-av says:

Bristish and Irish people have been suffering for years with american actors doing shitty attempts at our various accents. (Lots of American reviews of Cassidy’s accent in preacher spring to mind. It’s terrible.) BC just sounds non regional white American to my ears.

  • handsomecool-av says:

I loved that they played this after the end credits of Spider-Man NWH. There IS still a more traditional mid-credits scene, (which was cute) but I would love it if they instead focused on new teasers and trailers after credits.

  • storklor-av says:

Shang-Chi, No Way Home, and now Doc 2 prove one thing: Wong is the Coulson of Phase 4. And I am here for it.

  • systemmastert-av says:

I really want the dimensions and the timelines to be two separate galaxy-threatening events and they only cross over in comic relief breaks, all Ant-Man fighting 5 Yellowjackets and America Chavez is in the background fighting a Red Skull from a world where he won, and they’re just like “Hey!  Dimension stuff?”  “Time stuff!”  “Neat, see ya!”

  • scottsummers76-av says:

the evil what if dr strange was definitely there.

  • endymion421-av says:

    Whoo, Chavez!

  • endymion421-av says:

BC has a pretty good American accent, though I liked his one in “The Power of the Dog” a bit better. Not quite god-tier like Hugh Laurie, Christian Bale, or Daniel Radcliffe, but solid!

  • cscurrie-av says:

we’ll see how this goes. hmmm.. i like his movies.
