Ever since the Frasier reboot was originally plucked from our most feverish dreams and dragged into the cold, harsh light of reality, it hasn’t been hard to imagine what kind of premise it might adopt. (Even if we might desperately hope for something a little more ambitious than what we ultimately got.) Frasier was a family sitcom at its core—albeit a family where all involved were adults with varying opinions on opera and big stinky chairs—and so a family sitcom it would remain.

Hence news today, per Variety, that said reboot has cast British actor Jack Cutmore-Scott as Frasier Crane’s son Freddie, who’ll essentially be the show’s second lead, alongside Kelsey Grammer. Cutmore-Scott (who TV obsessives will remember from ABC’s Deception, the TV procedural about a stage magician who joins the FBI and then uses stage magic to solve FBI crimes, a.k.a. the greatest idea for a TV show in human history) is the fifth actor to play the character; two child actors played him on Cheers, while Trevor Einhorn (who later co-starred in The Magicians) wound up playing him for the majority of his appearances on Frasier itself.

Apparently, Freddie has grown up to be a hybrid of his highbrow father and his more down-to-earth grandfather, having dropped out of college to become a firefighter instead of a radio psychologist. Per the series description, “he’s never looked back until now, when recent troubles have left him with no one to turn to in his life. If they can overcome past differences, Freddy and Frasier might finally have a chance to repair old wounds.” Which is, y’know, exactly the premise of Frasier, except with Dr. Crane now in the older role, and no Niles, because they somehow failed to understand that we’d only watch this thing if there was Niles in it.

Anyway: The Frasier reboot will air on Paramount+, allegedly some time in 2023.

Can we expect a Cheers reboot now as well to go along with Night Court and this?? What about Wings?!?

Gonna be hard to top this video

I still say that clip is funnier then 95% of Fraiser

Bullshit, frasier is absolutely hilarious and anyone who disagrees hasn’t seen it.

I remember enjoying it when it was on but it was one of my quarantine binges and it didn’t hold up as well. It suffers a lot from many sitcoms of the time where the relied on the status quo never changing and recycling the same jokes over and over again. It’s something that watching every week didn’t really jump out but watch 5 episodes back to back and you can see the writers getting lazy. I honestly think the reason Cheers stands out as the absolute best sitcom of a generation is the fact that season 6 is a soft reboot that actually worked. It allowed the creators to tell new stories and gave the show new life.

Status quo never changing except that Niles and Daphne finally did get together and, wonder of wonders, it was great, for once.

Shelly Long leaving was a good thing they probably would of done the relationship with Sam to death.

Man, I’m always fascinated by us humans and our differing opinions. Your criticisms are valid, but I’ve got to say, I’m fresh off a rewatch of both and in my eyes Frasier is by far and away the funnier show, even if it went on a bit too long.

          • nilus-av says:

I won’t deny that my rewatch happening during lockdown maybe effected how I perceived the show.  Like many, I was not in a good place

This show better have a very attractive mancunian live in nurse or I’m not tuning in.

So the most recent small-minded, hate filled, misogynistic, conspiracy ranting, shit-posting assclown to grace kinja is out of the grey?Well done, teamWell done.

      • mr-rubino-av says:

        A. Have to narrow it down, etc.B. I’d say some shadowy cabal of people behind the site just let people out of the greys randomly for chaos purposes but I don’t think there actually are any people behind the site anymore.

Who? Is that idiot who has multiple account that are all variations on other posters? Aka the “So Brave” guy? I usually just ask him how his mom is and then dismiss all his replies, seems to really irate him.

Huh. I always thought that this reboot was just a big internet joke, like The Big Lebowski spin-off about The Jesus.

Wow so the woke mafia made Frasier’s son gay. Unreal.

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I heard they made a bunch of other people gay too, those monsters. And they made a bunch of people Black too I heard.

    • reformedagoutigerbil-av says:

It’s pretty much Cheers/Frasier canon that Freddie is a gay, black Eskimo.

    • nilus-av says:

They also made him hit as hell, so I’m down. Honestly watching more then two episodes of the original Fraser makes yo bi-curios by default so I’d totally believe Fredrick would swing both ways

      • charliemeadows69420-av says:

He’s a firefighter so obviously he is going to be hot and gay.   I can’t wait!!!!

        • nilus-av says:

I means fire fighting is mostly just hot dudes having a multi night sleepover where they eat chili and may have to go get hot and sweaty for a few hours.

        • par3182-av says:

The whole steel fire industry is gay. Aerospace, too, and the railroads. And you know what else? Broadway.

          • charliemeadows69420-av says:

This entire site is now infested with humorless dickheads.   It sucks.  I had to dismiss like 10 triggered lunatics to this joke who wanted to yell about Trump or some other bullshit.   It really sucks what idiots they let out of the greys here.

      • luasdublin-av says:

Was that hot , or is hit a new phrase I have to learn now, dammit!

    • danielnegin-av says:

Huh? I see nothing in this or the Variety article stating Freddy’s sexual preference. I’m sure what the heck you are talking about.

      • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

        That’s ok. Neither do they.
But they’ll dismiss your reply if you question them (no matter how many upvotes you have), so seems they just want to dish but can’t take.

    • gargsy-av says:

      “Unreal.”What makes it unreal?

  • yellowfoot-av says:

Adam Campbell off of Great News could probably make a pretty decent facsimile for Niles as some sort of second cousin, thrice removed.

  • charliemeadows69420-av says:

Deception was so good. Doctor Knife: It doesn’t matter what you think. It’s what you can prove officer and you can’t prove anything. I have an airtight alibi!!!!Agent Abracadabra:   What if I can make your alibi….disappear?!?!?!?!

  • hulk6785-av says:

No Niles!?  Then, what’s the fucking point!?

  • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

Reboot or sequel/continuation or are they all the same thing?

    • marshalgrover-av says:

In my mind, a true “reboot” is a total reset of continuity, like say, the My Little Pony shows.

      • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

That’s what I thought, though it seems the current Doctor Who has been called a reboot, as has the recent Dexter, Will & Grace, etc.
Seems to differ on a case-by-case basis for different reasons, but I just wish there was a term used with a single meaning so we all knew what’s being talked about.

        • lostlimey296-av says:

I’ve consistently seen Doctor Who post 2005 referred to as a “Revival” rather than a Reboot.

          • marshalgrover-av says:

Yeah, if it were a “reboot,” they’d’ve started with a new First Doctor instead of continuing the established line.

          • luasdublin-av says:

Tethnically they’ve done that twice , recasting David Bradley ( really well) as William Hartnell’s version . Then saying …actually that guy wasn’t the first doctor at all , and showing earlier ones ..

          • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

            I’ve seen both.

        • rogueindy-av says:

I’m pretty sure it’s obfuscation because studios think calling stuff a sequel or spinoff will scare audiences away.See also: titles without numbers, sequels with the same title, etc.

        • laurenceq-av says:

The correct term would be sequel or revival.  People use “reboot” wrong all the damn time.

      • laurenceq-av says:

That’s exactly what it means and most people still get it wrong.  Inexcusable that AV Club is still screwing it up.  (Oh, what am I saying?? Of course they’re getting it wrong.)

  • shyguyfox-av says:

Odd that Frederick’s original actor Trevor Einhorn is still working (he even had a memorable if not crucial role on Mad Men) but they’re not having him reprise. Guess he makes for a bit less of a convincing firefighter, to be fair… Also strange that it took so long to “break” the story on this reboot only to seemingly go with what everyone’s first guess was when the project was announced all those years ago: a reversal of Frasier where he has to play off his more working-class son. Will definitely be checking this out because Frasier is an all-time classic and the character was great on Cheers, though my expectations are thoroughly tempered. As long as Bebe Neuwirth pops up once or twice I’ll be at least a little satisfied. ;3

  • coatituesday-av says:

I’ve never been a Frasier fan but even I know that without Niles this thing doesn’t make any sense.

  • liebkartoffel-av says:

“Apparently, Freddie has grown up to be a hybrid of his highbrow father and his more down-to-earth grandfather, having dropped out of college to become a firefighter instead of a radio psychologist.”I feel like Dr. Frasier Crane would insist on pointing out that he’s a radio psychiatrist, not a mere radio psychologist.

  • minimummaus-av says:

    Niles is the new Maris.

  • turbotastic-av says:

“Even if we might desperately hope for something a little more ambitious than what we ultimately got.”They are cowards for not making a direct adaption of this.

  • iamtylerdurden79-av says:

I want to see a full season order of Black Frasier.

  • buffalobear-av says:

Completely accurate. No Niles = no interest.

  • jallured1-av says:

Legit did not know the original Freddie (at least from the last portion of the show) was John Mathis from Mad Men.

  • frenchton-av says:

I would rather watch a sitcom about Niles and Daphne raising their brood of children.

  • laurenceq-av says:

Sitcom veteran writer-producer turned podcaster Rob Long threw out his pitch for the reboot, which he called “Cheers: Infinity War” which is Niles and Frasier move to Boston and buy Cheers from Sam. So it’s a hybrid of both shows with some Cheers regulars and Niles and Frasier at the center. Frederick would have been basically the new Woody, working behind the bar and the polar opposite of Frasier in terms of personality. Definitely sounds better than whatever Niles-free crap they’re going to foist on us.

    • kevinkap-av says:

It would also have Niles come out as gay.

      • laurenceq-av says:

No.  Just because the actor is gay doesn’t mean the character needs to be.

        • kevinkap-av says:

Rob Long has said in the opening episode of the treatment you allude to it would have Niles come out as gay.

          • laurenceq-av says:

Oh, sorry. I must have forgot that part. I thought that was your suggestion.Well, this is where I part ways with Rob Long’s idea (as much as I like the rest of it.)  Niles doesn’t need to be gay.

          • luasdublin-av says:

I mean , normally that wouldn’t be a problem ,but  the guy spent like 23 seasons or whatever trying to get with his dads carer.“I’m sorry Daphne , your accent threw me , I just always assumed you were a guy.”I guess he could come out as bi , but since that’s pretty much every modern characters default state nowadays you dont really get credit for it (slight exaggeration here) .Having Daphne finally come out as a Londoner would make more sense though(I mean that ‘Manchester” accent wasnt fooling anyone).

    • gargsy-av says:

“Definitely sounds better than” literally nothing.

  • bagman818-av says:

Jack Cutmore-Scott seems to be a prime example of “white dudes failing up”.I’m trying to imagine a woman and/or PoC that would be cast as the lead in a 3rd tv series after his first 2 were cancelled after 1 season. I say this as someone who enjoyed both of those shows.

  • libsexdogg-av says:

What every Frasier fan wanted: More Freddy and less Niles. … Wait, scratch that, reverse it.

  • jsmangh-av says:

I’ll give this a chance. It could work, although I’d rather see the other cast members as well. Pierce and Neuwirth sounded open to it.  Grammer seems to think people tuned in to see Frasier.  I think it was the whole ensemble.

  • gargsy-av says:

“Cutmore-Scott … is the fifth actor to play the character; two child actors played him on Cheers, while Trevor Einhorn wound up playing him for the majority of his appearances on Frasier itself.”

So…who was the fourth actor to play him?

  • luisxromero-av says:

Weird choice when Trevor Einhorn is right there.

  • americanmasterpiece--the1969charger-av says:

Recall how quickly the re-do of old Murphy Brown with the grown son crashed and burned? Get ready for a rerun.
