For the second week in a row, Chris Pratt has taken both of the top two spots on the domestic box office charts (unless… is he in Book Club: The Next Chapter? Wait no, that’s Candice Bergen). Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 made $60 million in its second week, only a 48 percent drop from its debut, bringing it to $213 million in the U.S. total, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie held relatively strong at $13 million in its sixth week (with $535 total).

Way down in third, possibly because of a distinct lack of one Christopher Prattopher, is Book Club: The Next Chapter—possibly the most well-justified use of the word “chapter” in a sequel title of all time. It made $6.5 million in its debut. Fourth place went to Evil Dead Rise, making us realize that we could’ve done a Mother’s Day theme for this story (it made $3 million and has $60 million after four weeks) followed by Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. which is another movie with a mom in it ($2.5 million and $16 million after three weeks).

In the second half of the top 10 are newcomer Hypnotic, John Wick: Chapter 4, Love Again, Air, and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. A few other newcomers landed just outside of the top 10, like BlackBerry, but they’ll just have to try harder next week if they want to be acknowledged.

The full top 10 is below, courtesy of Box Office Mojo. Also: Here’s a shout out to anyone out there who identifies as a mom, whether you’re Ayesha from Guardians or Super Mario’s mom or the Deadite mom from Rise or anything else in between.

That’s a really good hold for Guardians. Feige relaxes ever so slightly.

the new Evil Dead is pretty good, some review said about it “goes hard from start to finish”…SPOILER ALERT…………Spoilers: they actually kill the kids! At the start you’re like “how are they going to bring the mother back?” and then you realize they aren’t…and then you’re like “how is this a big enough supporting cast to have enough people to kill” and it isn’t…I just didn’t honestly believe they were going to start killing off the kids. I tip my hat.

Brutal week for the non-blockbusters. But can you blame audiences? Mid-budget movies get released to premium VOD about three to four weeks after premiere, so why would a time-strapped adult (or family) ever take a trip to the cinema if they can stay home and see it in less than a month? Caving to this request has meant any exclusivity has effectively evaporated. Yeah, “Maverick” saved theatres last year, but for whom?

So much for supposed “Comic Book Fatigue”. Make a fun comic book movie, and people will come.

Saw GofG this weekend and to me at least, it may be the best Marvel movie yet. Funny, sad, exciting, bold. It is everything one expects from this franchise. Go get’em, Guardians.

The Mouse spits at the grave you dug for him

the variety article mentioned that there aren’t many mcu movies with that strong of a hold, most of the recent ones have dropped like 70% in the 2nd weekend.  The two they mentioned that had a smaller drop were Black Panther (45%) and (surprisingly) the original Thor (47%).

I went into Guardians 3 knowing nothing except that a lot of critics hated it, it was sick as hell. 10/10, no notes.Unfortunately it was a double feature with Ant Man 3, about which critics were 100% correct. Jesus, what a stinker. Like, all the parts where Jonathan Majors was doing stuff were okay, but the rest… Woof. I can literally only write about it with old timey slang. What a dog! That thing stinks on ice! Inscrutable Jerry Lewis noises! It’s so weird too, because Ant Man was great, and Scott in the Avengers movies is great, but every subsequent Ant Man movie has been just terrible. I guess that’s what happens when you alienate your creatives then replace them with a faceless committee?

Jesus, enough Majors slurping. The virtue has been signaled.

      • raycearcher-av says:

I’m not sure what you mean! Can you elaborate?

        • bobwworfington-av says:

“The movie sucked, but the black guy was great.”

          • fulgrymm-av says:

I don’t know where you’re from, but around these parts, “okay” != “great”.

What an interesting take. I am curious why your first thought was that I didn’t actually like the portrayal and only claimed to because Majors is black. What would be my end goal in this scenario? What innate quality of myself, the film, or Majors as a performer would preclude my feelings being honest? Is there something about black actors that stops them from delivering a performance above the par set by the rest of a film? Does this quality apply in films with predominantly black casts? Can a black actor be better than, say, a predominantly Asian cast?
This is all new territory to me dude, I’m just going to need all this explained to me like I’m a total idiot. I’m getting some real truth here.

Ant Man 3 was ok but Guardians 3 is probably the best Marvel movie since Endgame so the juxtaposition made Ant Man look that much worse.

People don’t use “stinks on ice” nearly enough. (I not only use old-timey slang, I actually am that old.)

    • lmh325-av says:

Did a “lot” of critics hate Guardians? It has an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes for its critics’ score. That surely leans positive.

Saw Guardians 3 on saturday, it’s a fun ride. Full of nightmare fuel, IYKYK, nice Rocket origin story.  Adam Warlock comes in strong, but it sidelined most of the movie, and def had many heart strings pulling moments.

Amusing to see hypnotic did so badly. Robert Rodriguez is a cool guy, but the trailer seems insanely drab and derivative. It somehow cost 65 million as well, which is a little baffling.

    • capeo-av says:

Hypnotic was basically an adventure into seeing how much Rodriguez and company could claim a tax loss on.

      • mr-smith1466-av says:

I have no animosity towards Rodriguez, but it was funny he kept citing Hitchcock movies as his inspiration for hypnotic, when the trailer makes it blatantly clear its a low rent Nolan knockoff.

  • stevennorwood-av says:

Talk about a difference: Quantumania has been out for three months and has made 214M; Guardians 3, two weeks, 214M. One of those seems to be more beloved than the other.

  • radarskiy-av says:

Chris Pratt is the lucrative Chris.
