In many ways, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 felt like a real swan song for the beloved series—an increasing rarity in the MCU. In his review of the 2023 film for The A.V. Club, Matthew Jackson wrote that the movie “carries with it the weight not just of the six years it took to get it made, but of a certain sense of finality in a fictional universe that’s seriously lacking in endings… yet here’s Gunn and his cast, doing their best to create some kind of satisfying conclusion to a story they started nearly a decade ago.” With a little help from Florence + The Machine, they pulled it off.

Despite all this, Zoe Saldaña hopes the franchise could return one day. “I would think it would be a huge loss for Marvel if they didn’t find a way to bring back the Guardians of the Galaxy,” she says on an upcoming episode of The Playlist’s “Discourse” podcast. “It’s just such a fan-favorite group of misfits, you know? And then at the helm, they had a voice like James Gunn’s writing—which is just so marvelous for and very specific for this genre. And it’s so great for this genre as well. So, I would be the first one in the first row to sort of celebrate when the Guardians of the Galaxy come back.”

If Marvel stays true to its recent patterns, Saldaña might just get her wish. Still, she insists she won’t be one donning the green makeup this time. “I mean, so far, I think that she is [gone for good] for me, but I don’t think Gamora has gone for good,” she said of her extraterrestrial character.

Last year, the actor also suggested to Total Film Magazine that she’d be happy to see a new face take on the role. “She’s been such an impactful character for fans, and especially female fans, and young female fans,” Saldaña said. “I would love for Marvel to figure out a way to find that next generation of actors that can incarnate these characters, and give them this immortality that fans generationally keep coming back to.”

Hey, it looks like avclub is no longer a part of GMG anymore? Please? Pretty please??

    • happyinparaguay-av says:

GMG was renamed G/O Media when it was acquired by some shady financial firm, and as of a week or so ago they sold AV Club to Paste Magazine.

      • kngcanute-av says:

And hopefully Paste realizes that a really vibrant comments section is a valuable thing for  a content site.

        • nilus-av says:

The rumor I heard is Paste is the kinda place that likes to lock commenting behind a paywall.  Not a fan of that

          • kngcanute-av says:

Oh so you can see the content but can only comment on it fi you pay? Dont think that would keep me coming back, TBH.

        • i-miss-splinter-av says:

I hope so. The comments on Jezebel are pretty much non-existent because of the subscription requirement. They relaunched Splinter the other week with the same model, same thing. And even though they’re both owned by Paste, it looks like the subscriptions are separate, subscribing to Jezebel doesn’t subscribe you to Splinter & vice-versa, although I could be wrong about that. I might subscribe to Splinter, since that was my favourite of these sites, so I’ll find out for sure if I do.

          • kngcanute-av says:

Not a huge fan of Paste to begin with, though to be honest havent looked at anything from them in many many years.Separate fees per sub site is really offputting though.

At least it’s an actual media company that wants to cover pop culture, unlike a shitty private equity firm that brought back slideshows.

          • kngcanute-av says:

Yeah I am not sure if it is a bad move for the AV Club, Mr. themok, but I dont get enough value out of the site as it is to pay for it.Do you?

          • ooklathemok3994-av says:

What I would like to see instead of another shitty subscription service with questionable perks would be some sort of in-house GoFundMe where we could pay to bring back writers like Nathan Rabin.

And please, call me Ookla. Mr. The Mok is my father’s name.

          • kngcanute-av says:

Yeah I generally hope that with this move away from Giz’ shite management and mandates that they at least bring in some quality writers, if not bring back some of the people the site has lost over the years.

In principle I don’t mind the idea of posting comments being behind a paywall, especially if a site/community built up that way from the get-go, but to suddenly apply a paywall to the AV Club’s comments would permanently kill it. I don’t mind paying to support a site I use a lot (assuming it means I see no ads), but not if there’s no one there to talk to.

          • loopychew-av says:

I agree. I’ve been happy about 404 Media and Aftermath’s paywalled comments sections, but they also started off as subscription sites. AVClub throwing one up later would not be great.

        • yellowfoot-av says:

There’s no guarantees, but Paste has already updated the about page along with their comment policy, and it doesn’t give much indication that they intend to paywall comments on this site. Maybe with some luck, they’ll hope to use free commenting here to drive traffic toward their other sites and expect some people to subscribe to those.

          • kngcanute-av says:

Interestingly this site is still linked to Giz because i got notice about your comment when i logged into i09!

          • i-miss-splinter-av says:

AV Club comments still use Kinja. Jezebel & Splinter use Paste’s own comment system.

          • kngcanute-av says:

I am sure when they integrate the kinja will be killed.

          • ooklathemok3994-av says:

I was here for the Kinjapocalypse and I will be here for the Pasturrection.

          • ooklathemok3994-av says:

I’m never paying a subscription to leave comments, but I would open to paying into a fund to bring back Rabin.

Of all the MCU mini-franchises, The Guardians of the Galaxy movies were the most successful. I can’t see Disney not going back to this well.  I wonder if they work without James Gunn?

    • i-miss-splinter-av says:

Another director could definitely make another Guardians movie work. The story arc that Gunn handled came to a nice close in the third Guardians movie, which means that a new director can tell a new story.

  • mahfouz-av says:

Guardians 3 was great and felt like the perfect way to wrap up the MCU chapter of my pop culture life as a fan. I can’t say I’m never going to watch another film/series but it definitely has been downgraded from “everything is must see” to “does this specific entry spark my curiosity?” because most of the recent stuff just hasn’t.

  • bloggymcblogblog-av says:

It wouldn’t surprise me if we saw individual members of the GotG in other movies. The end of the third one teased that Star Lord would be back somehow.

    • systemmastert-av says:

He’ll be back because of the next big Avengers crossover. Secret Wars will likely hoover up a bunch of heroes that are currently on Earth into a big multiversal new Earth for combat shenanigans, and he’s chilling in Missouri or whatever it was.

I now know her primarily for thinking she looks like a marshmallow.

  • dsgagfdaedsg-av says:

How is it that Zoe and I are within one week of each other’s age (45), and yet she looks 30 and I look at least 50?

  • 777byatlassound-av says:

Harmony Korine for Guardians of the Galaxy: TH4R, lol.or Edgar Wright/Joe Cornish.

  • cscurrie-av says:

Have a short film with Sylvester Stallone and his space pirates.

  • mackyart-av says:

I can’t see it becoming anything other than a new director trying to mimic Gunn’s style and humor. Fans will try to relive the peak Guardians, but will end up watching copycat Gobots Guardians.
By now, we should expect disappointment from any sequel of a fun franchise trying to relive the glory days.
