Ice Cube still very mad about that movie he lost because he wouldn’t get the COVID vaccine

Cube is still upset about missing a $9 million paycheck for Jack Black's Oh Hell No because he refused to be vaccinated

Ice Cube would like you to know that he’s still very angry about the COVID vaccine (that nobody actually required him to get), venting on a recent podcast interview that his refusal to get “the jab”—that is, a vaccine show to prevent infection from a virus that killed millions of people—cost him $9 million, for which he’s still very, to use not-his-words, miffed.

Per Variety, Cube addressed the topic on a recent episode of the Million Dollaz Worth Of Game podcast, referencing a rescinded offer to co-star in the Jack Black comedy Oh Hell No that would have paid the $9 million, and which was pulled after he refused to get “the jab.” “Those motherfuckers didn’t give it to me because I wouldn’t get the shot,” Cube asserted. “I didn’t turn it down. They just wouldn’t give it to me.”

Displaying the grasp of herd immunity, epidemiology, and causality that we’ve come to expect from one of the key minds behind the Are We There Yet? duology, Cube pointed out that, because he never ended up getting COVID, nobody should have expected him to get the vaccine in the first place. “The covid shot, the jab…I didn’t need it. I didn’t catch that shit at all. Nothing. Fuck them. I didn’t need that shit.”

Cube’s refusal to get vaccinated led to Oh Hell No’s production apparently stalling out; the film was pulled off Sony’s film schedule in February 2022, and there’s been no movement on it since. Cube’s own filmography has been pretty light during the pandemic period, too; he last appeared in Tracee Ellis Ross and Dakota Johnson’s The High Note in 2020, and before that, opposite Charlie Day in Fist Fight in 2017. “I don’t know how Hollywood feel about me right now,” he remarked as part of the vaccine conversation.

Does the vaccine protect you? Yes. So if you’re exposed to an unvaccinated or infected person, you’re protected, right?

      • elrond-hubbard-elven-scientologist-av says:

Sadly, it comes down to probabilities and statistics, which is why most people don’t really understand.Covid vaccines do not 100% prevent infection. They do not provide immunity. But they do reduce the probability that you become infected, and reduce the probability that if you do become infected you don’t have a serious case. So the more people that are vaccinated, the more the probabilities are lowered for everyone.

You said what I wanted to, thanks.Medicine (mostly) doesn’t work by easy to explain 1:1 correlations, and public health even less so.  Rather, its a matter of stacking the deck in your favor as much as possible.  Control the variables that you can, so that your chances of avoiding a bad outcome are reduced as much as possible.

The vaccine doesn’t prevent infection. It does reduce the likelihood of a severe acute infection and some long term complications, but even asymptomatic cases can lead to long covid and the protections the vaccine and boosters provide become more and more negligible as more variants arise and with repeat infection from different variants. Covid attacks and weakens the immune system and so any reinfection is likely to be more severe and more likely to lead to long term complications, as well as increasing your risk and susceptibility to other diseases and infections, re: weakened immune system from covid. Repeat infections and infections from other airborne viruses are going to be very common this winter, and so many are unprepared and have no idea.Getting vaccinated is certainly important, but what’s more important is that people return to committing to wearing a mask in public and reducing travel and public gatherings especially as we head into the winter while covid variants, flu and rsv are sending unprotected children to hospitals that have been under immense pressure and strain for 3 years now.But it’s the holidays and people have shown they truly only care about themselves and immediate circle, and because of disastrous messaging from the president and cdc, think covid is over/no big deal, so this winter is going to be very very bad, and we’re going to see the effects of it over the course of 2023 in huge uptick in excess respiratory and cardiac deaths, and newly disabled people

      • hudsmt-av says:

Even a high school student should be able to explain this better than you just did. How does this happen? How do grown adults have such poor grasp of scientific basics? A vaccine is not a wall. It’s more like a toolbox. It only starts working after the virus has entered the body, and it gives the body the tools to fight back. The covid vaccines are safe, effective, and do not contain GPS monitoring devices. The world desperately needs everyone to grow up and learn a little biology. Your lack of understanding of science actually harms people. You need to try harder.

  • BlueSeraph-av says:

Looking at it from a practical sense, it seems it was a simple deal breaker during negotiations. The studio wanted him, but they wouldn’t budge on the vaccine issue and neither would he. So an agreement couldn’t be reached. And that was that. From a business stance, there’s no controversy. He could be upset about the circumstances and how it ended, but he can’t say he was screwed over by them. It would only be a controversy if they hired him and all the paperwork was signed off, and then they pulled the vaccine deal after the fact and threatened to fire him if he refused. Nothing reached that level, but he’s pissed off if asked about it. He has a right to be pissed off, just as they have the right to set some non-negotiable stipulations to their project. And he’s free to set up his own projects using his own money giving him the right to set the stipulations. It’s an interesting story, but it’s not as big a deal as Cube would make it sound. Sony moved on, and so should he.

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I don’t even know I’d go so far as to say he has a right to be pissed off. (I mean, yes, we’re all entitled to our emotions, but that doesn’t mean they come from a logical place.) He has stated a principle – that he won’t get vaccinated – and someone has told him that it clashes with their principles. This is the consequence of that clash. Ice Cube can’t be upset that his own actions have prevented him getting something he wants.

      • BlueSeraph-av says:

I don’t disagree with any of that. If he was debating or arguing this, then you and mostly everyone else would win the argument with your counterpoints. But from this article and the original article that went further into detail, he just had a tantrum wrapped around on the whole deal and his frustrations with Hollywood. That podcast interview wanted to know his feelings and had no problem if he would vent his anger. So it looks like he has no problem talking about it to anyone that asks. He corrected himself at the end albeit in a mean spirited way saying they just couldn’t make a deal. So everyone is free to point out that his stance on the vaccine thing would have consequences for him. However, like many people that hate being pointed out for stuff like this, he’ll probably want to have the last word, but most likely only throwing insults in this particular situation and nothing constructive.

The article you’re linking to, taken in its entirety (i.e. not just the title) doesn’t agree with the OP. tl:dr, Of all the people who were vaccinated only a little over 10 percent of the U.S. population have a current vaccine shot against the Omicron strain of COVID-19, so naturally the rest are dying from the Omicron strain.
You’re posting this link a lot, so let’s post the text here (Kinja will garble some of the sentences, but otherwise it’s the same text as your link):
It’s no longer a pandemic of the unvaccinatedFor the first time, a majority of Americans dying from the coronavirus received at least the primary series of the vaccine.Fifty-eight percent of coronavirus deaths in August were people who were vaccinated or boosted, according to an analysis conducted for The Health 202 by Cynthia Cox, vice president at the Kaiser Family Foundation. It’s a continuation of a troubling trend that has emerged over the past year. As vaccination rates have increased and new variants appeared, the share of deaths of people who were vaccinated has been steadily rising. In September 2021, vaccinated people made up just 23 percent of coronavirus fatalities. In January and February this year, it was up to , per our colleagues Fenit Nirappil and Dan Keating.“We can no longer say this is a pandemic of the unvaccinated,” Cox told The Health 202.Being unvaccinated is still a major risk factor for dying from covid-19. But efficacy wanes over time, and an analysis out last week from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlights the need to get regular booster shots to keep one’s risk of death from the coronavirus low, especially for the elderly.Anthony Fauci, the nation’s preeminent infectious-disease expert, used his last White House briefing yesterday ahead of his December retirement to urge Americans to get the recently authorized omicron-specific boosters.“The final message I give you from this podium is that please, for your own safety, for that of your family, get your updated covid-19 shot as soon as you’re eligible,” he said.White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre:Dr. Fauci is a pillar of the public health community. From HIV and AIDS to Ebola to COVID, he has kept the American public informed and prepared through multiple crises. It was an honor having him in the briefing room to remind Americans on the importance of getting vaccinated. pic.twitter.com/O0qXuNpY11— Karine Jean-Pierre (@PressSec) November 22, 2022Ratio shiftCox, like many experts, says she’s not surprised by the ratio shift. There are a few reasons:At this point in the pandemic, a large majority of Americans have received at least their primary series of coronavirus vaccines, so it makes sense that vaccinated people are making up a greater share of fatalities.Individuals at greatest risk of dying from a coronavirus infection, such as the elderly, are also more likely to have received the shots.Vaccines lose potency against the virus over time and variants arise that are better able to resist the vaccines, so continued boosters are needed to continue to prevent illness and death. The BA.5 omicron subvariant became dominant in July and consistently accounted for the majority of new coronavirus infections across the United States until earlier this month. The highly transmissible strain fueled a surge of new infections, reinfections and hospitalizations throughout the summer.BoostersIt’s still true that vaccinated groups are at a lower risk of dying from a covid-19 infection than the unvaccinated when the data is adjusted for age. An analysis released by the CDC last week underscores the protection that additional booster shots offer against severe illness and death as immunity wanes. Let’s take a look at deaths in August, when the highly contagious BA.5 variant reached its peak:That month, unvaccinated people aged 6 months and older died at about six times the rate of those who had received their primary series of shots.People with one booster dose were even better protected. Unvaccinated people over the age of 5 had about 8 times the risk of dying from a coronavirus infection than those who received a booster shot.Among individuals who were eligible to receive additional booster shots, the gap is even more striking. Unvaccinated people 50 and up had 12 times the risk of dying from covid-19 than adults the same age with two or more booster doses.David French, senior editor for the Dispatch:One of the saddest phenomena of the online right is the absolute fury at those of us who supported COVID vaccines and continue to support COVID vaccines. The death toll of vaccine refusal is simply staggering and heartbreaking. Here’s January 1, 2021 until April 30, 2022: pic.twitter.com/qnG2Eo0DXX— David French (@DavidAFrench) November 1, 2022Six-week sprintAmericans’ uptake of the latest booster shots continues to be slow.Around 35 million people have received the updated boosters that became available to people 12 and over in September and to children as young as 5 last month. That’s a little over 10 percent of the U.S. population, amid concern that cooler weather will bring a surge of covid cases as people move indoors and respiratory infections spread.Yesterday, the White House announced a six-week push ahead of the holidays aimed at increasing booster uptake among seniors, people who are racial minorities and those who live in rural areas, all of which have disproportionately suffered severe disease and death during the coronavirus pandemic, our colleagues Frances Stead Sellers and Ariana Eunjung Cha write.Senior officials said the Biden administration would direct some of its remaining resources to fight the pandemic into a $475 million campaign to support community health centers and organizations working to get the elderly and people with disabilities boosted. The administration’s push coincided with the release of a CDC study offering the first evidence that the bivalent boosters are better at preventing symptomatic infection against newly circulating variants than earlier doses.“I feel very confident that if people continue to get vaccinated at good numbers, if people get boosted, we can absolutely have a very safe and healthy holiday season,” Ashish Jha, White House coronavirus czar, said yesterday.Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.)2 days out until #Thanksgiving!

Most vaccinated people in America have only been vaccinated against the original strain of COVID-19 and haven’t had a current vaccine against the Omicron strain.
There are more vaccinated people than unvaccinated. Therefore, there are more people who have been vaccinated against the original strain of COVID-19 that are dying from the Omicron strain.

            Like I said, that’s the 13/50 argument

          • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

repeating yourself isn’t explaining how what you said is the same as what I said

          • johngalt666-av says:

50% of murders are committed by 13% of the population. It’s technically a fact, but often dismissed. So which metric are we using?

          • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

None of that has anything to do with following the global scientific medical consensus and taking a COVID-19 vaccine during a pandemic to reduce the chances of infection for yourself and to others.

          • johngalt666-av says:

Actually it does if we cannot agree on by which metric we measure failure or success. If people are still dying, does it necessitate another round of double jabs and quad boosters if the first ones barely, if at all, worked? Especially since “the science” now says myocarditis is a major risk factor, especially in children and that omicron isn’t nearly as deadly as the older strains. Regardless, it should be up to the individual and not mandated to work and earn a living. If people are at risk, or just frightened, they always have the option to stay at home. End of.

          • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

Those vaccinated against the original strain are still alive in enough numbers to be the majority dying now from not being vaccinated against the new strain. This is evidence that not only did the first vaccines work, but that getting the new vaccine is more than reasonable.
To argue against this is ridiculous.

          • johngalt666-av says:

The argument of taking a shot every 6 weeks being the only solution is ridiculous.

          • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

So take a current vaccine and then a booster in 6 months. Fine for most people and certainly better than nothing, which is ridiculous.

          • johngalt666-av says:

So your argument is that the shots are the magic bullet, and that there is no other answer? JFC you’re a buffoon.

          • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

A buffoon would interpret “take a current vaccine and then a booster in 6 months. Fine for most people and certainly better than nothing” = “the shots are the magic bullet, and that there is no other answer”.

          • johngalt666-av says:

Then by that rationale: people don’t HAVE to take all the shots because there ARE other options. Not to invalidate your theory. Stay out grown folks business.

          • it-has-a-super-flavor--it-is-super-calming-av says:

Grown folks usually have better comprehension skills than you and can agree upon a shared reality.

I have. The article (and the idiots reposting) both state: it’s a pandemic of the vaccinated AND 58% of Covid deaths are from vaccinated people. Seems cut and dry to me. Before you queef and throw “statistics” at me, allow me to preempt: I’ve heard the counterpoint to this and it’s the same argument as “13/50”. So how do we determine statistics? You can’t have it both ways Adolf.

Also while I don’t think it really matters at the end of the day, I do think it’s worth pointing out that Ice Cube sounds like he’s not down for the vaccination but it doesn’t sound like he’s a COVID denier. I don’t know what else he’s said or how he’s conducted himself in general throughout the pandemic but I wouldn’t necessarily put him in the same category as the folks on r/HermanCainAward. He’s still an asshole but it’s a different flavor asshole.

No one has imposed anything on anyone, you big baby. Ice Cube is not entitled to a $9 million movie contract. Every single movie requires its actors to meet certain criteria, he failed to meet this movie’s. He’s still a millionaire and has suffered absolutely no hardship over this. Go peddle your victim complex elsewhere.

      • chestrockwell24-av says:

But i bet you will say people ARE entitled to having their student loans forgiven, correct? Just confirm that hypocrisy for me, because both Ice Cube and those dipshits made a choice. And women in Hollywood who make millions need to shut the fuck up about not being paid as much as men, right?  They are still millionaires.  Be consistent here.

        • turbotastic-av says:

Those things have nothing to do with each other, but I went ahead and promoted your comment because I wanted everyone to see perhaps the single dumbest attempt at a gotcha response I’ve ever seen.

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

I’m using the logic you put forth. Yes or no are people entitled to student loans being forgiven? Yes or no is an actress being paid $15 million for a role entitled to $20 million instead just because a more popular male actor is getting paid that much?
And I’d quit the pretend victory shit.

          • turbotastic-av says:

You’re just whining about your pet issues and trying to shoehorn them into an unrelated topic.Yes, millions of people drowning in debt matter more than one whiny, entitled Hollywood celebrity who already has more money than he could ever need. And yes, sexism in Hollywood, an issue which affects literally half of the hundreds of thousands of people in that industry, is a problem that’s more pressing and important than Ice Cube’s fragile little ego.Take the L and go sob about it.

          • chestrockwell24-av says:

Your hypocrisy and pretend victory are noted. He’s the sort of dumb fuck who has no leg to stand on in actual, adult conversation, so he has to retreat to culture war drivel and flailing grasps at “hypocrisy” (far past the point at which most adults understand that hypocrisy does, in fact, exist). It’s clear, transparent, JV-level horseshit. So, yeah. Lil’ chest is either a culture war-chugging dipshit, or he’s all of 17-y-o (and thus a dipshit by pretty much any measure). • chestrockwell24-av says:

Nah, the logic has to be consistent. Ice Cube 100% is not entitled to that money. Nor are millionaire actresses entitled to more, nor are people who took out loans entitled to forgiveness. The fact the loans arent life threatening is all the more reason to say they arent entitled to that. There is no gender pay gap, it’s about box office and who can draw in the most people. Yes, Brad Pitt should be paid more than Scarlet Johanson if they both do a movie together, because he will draw in more people than she will.
