Last month, Rob McElhenney shared a set picture from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s 15th season, announcing that filming had just wrapped. Those who are eager to see more of Mac and his new Philly dirtbag look won’t have to wait much longer: season 15 officially premieres this December. As an extra treat for keeping us waiting over a year for the show’s return, FXX is airing two episodes on its premiere date.
It’s Always Sunny was ahead of the curve in showing how the gang would handle being in isolation while sick, airing the episode “The Gang Gets Quarantined” in 2013 during its ninth season. Now, there’s confirmation that the upcoming season will actually be set during the COVID pandemic.
The press release teases that the gang will “try to exploit pandemic aid, sidestep cancel culture, evade criminal justice, reflect on their origins, and reconcile their identities and homeland roots.” Oh and yeah, the gang somehow ends up in Ireland despite the global pandemic.
While it can be a bit depressing to be reminded of the pandemic on TV, It’s Always Sunny is the perfect show to be set during these COVID times, bringing humor into the horrors we experienced in the past year and a half.
“The Gang Gets Quarantined” already showed that Mac and Charlie can get very creative when it comes to using protective gear (they opted for helmets that allow you to safely drink, instead of wearing masks), and Frank became weirdly obsessed with slathering himself in hand sanitizer, so it’s expected that he’d be hoarding it during pandemic times.
Now we’ll see how they actually handle a deadly virus. Will Dennis still try to get laid when it’s unsafe to do so? Is Mac an antivaxxer? Will Dee go back to her YouTube days when she’s starved for attention? And how does Paddy’s Pub stay afloat in the pandemic? Thankfully, those questions will be answered this year.
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia will return on December 1.

Only when you are clean will you know my power.
Yeah, you can understand how a show like Curb Your Enthusiasm would just avoid the pandemic altogether by setting its new season in a post-Covid world. But as the article says, I don’t think it’s in Sunny’s DNA to not address it head-on.
Uhh..
The Gang Dies of Preventable Illnesses
Wolf Cola, Horse Pill Pharmacy.
Mac almost HAS to be an anti-vaxx guy, right? God fearing, in incredible shape and insanely conservative in most things?
Dennis – vaccinated because he is a hypochondriacMac – Antivax because he doesn’t believe the scienceCharlie – Antivax because he doesn’t understand the science.Dee – Tells everyone she’s vaccinated. She isn’tFrank – Sells counterfeit vaccination cards. Working on a scheme to hoard as many doses as he can finance the purchase of through several Cayman Island shell companies.
Pretty much!
Frank would probably get all three vaccines. He doesn’t have time to sift through the duds.
Furthermore he’d get three shots of all of them
I get the feeling Frank would also feel like being un-vaxxed would interfere with him “banging dirty HO-ers”.
God I can hear Frank saying that 2nd sentence
I’m probably telling you something you already know, but it is a quote from Sweet Dee has a Heart Attack when he takes a bunch of anti-anxiety drugs at and then ends up in the mental hospital.
Ha! I didn’t remember that but that explains it!
They’re going to pull a Walking Dead (comic version) and surprise finale the show when they all catch it and die.
well done!
This is so spot-on that now I’ll be disappointed if these predictions don’t happen in the actual episode.
Honestly I’m just trying to figure out what schemes Frank is concocting. How much money could he get out of the government for this fiasco?
Charlie gets every version of the shot about six times because he doesn’t understand boosters, plus tetanus, flu, polio, shingles, anthrax, rubella, measles, and experimental ebola and malaria shots, all on the same day in the same arm.Frank gets weird off brand Russian vaccines from a guy he knows. Definitely sells fake Hydroxychloroquine.
It’s entirely possible that Charlie has a mysterious natural immunity due to his less than sanitary lifestyle.
Right, and it’s already been established that his mother had him vaccinated for everything under the sun.
It’ll be rolled into the Wolf Cola/ Fight Milk empire.
Another possibility for Charlie – Pro vax because he thought they said “Coronas and a vacation”, due to not even vaguely understanding “coronavirus” or “vaccination”.
Science is a liar sometimes.
Spot on. I think they could do a whole episode about how Charlie is torn by Mac’s anti-vax arguments and hearing that the waitress is vaxed, which he decides to do to impress her.
Megan Ganz kinja account located.
Charlie was pro-Vax in the previous Quarantine episode as far as I remember.
I would go with Charlie is antivax because drinking bleach is working out fine for him.
Actually, I can imagine Charlie getting all the vaccines, because in the quarantine episode, he mentioned that his mother had him vaccinated for everything, and he was going to be just fine.
I’m assuming the episode would be more Dennis and Mac battling it out for whether or not Charlie would get vaccinated, like in the Science is a Liar Sometimes bit.
I could see Charlie trying to make some kind of fucked up cocktail with random vaccines he finds just because they taste good.
Charlie is definitely cooking up some nasty homebrewed COVID ”remedy” under the radiatior in his apartment.
And how does Paddy’s Pub stay afloat in the pandemic?
It’s never been entirely clear how Paddy’s stay afloat long before the pandemic, so I doubt answers are going to be forthcoming for this particular question.(I guess Frank’s riches played a part, but I don’t remember and it doesn’t much matter anyway….)
The pub’s finances really haven’t been a topic since the early seasons, but I believe it’s just assumed that Frank handles it all after buying the bar.
I love that scene where during one of their debates with the easels when a patron is just like “thanks guys!” and leaves.
I just watched that last night. It’s one of my favorite bits on the whole show – just a sad barfly ignoring a huge pointless debate.
They’ve mentioned offhandedly a few times that Frank would generally bail the gang out of any serious financial issues, though I don’t know if that extends to running Paddy’s or only the various schemes. If so, it’s the bare minimum, since whenever the bar does do well (for example, “The Gang Tends Bar”) they take notice.
That’s kind of the joke, though, and the creators acknowledged it many times.Early on, IIRC, their excuse was they didn’t have enough of a budget to pay for extras all the time and they liked the fact that the bar was a failure.
Frank bankrolls them, because he’s very rich and has nothing better to do.
I have been saying since last year that Sunny is the only show I will accept mentioning COVID. No one show should, only Sunny.
Curb’s season premiere had a COVID subplot I liked, and it was very on-brand.
And it was a light touch, allowing them to move on quickly.
It was absolutely essential on Superstore and they did a great job with it.
Sunny is the only show I trust to tackle the real world energy of the pandemic, in that the Gang is so incredibly selfish that I could see multiple characters licking doorknobs or whatever to prove it’s a hoax or to exploit the virus for their own ends. The DNA of Sunny was built for this kind of thing
Yeah this is the first time I’ve been straight-up excited to see a show handle the pandemic (although Superstore did it very well).
Exactly what I was gonna say. For any other show: no thanks. For this one? I honestly can’t wait.
Rob’s Mythic Quest has a GREAT Pandemic episode entirely on Facetime. Not strictly COVID, but still counts…?
That was a great episode, poor Poppy!
one of the shows where it makes perfect sense, and honestly i’m sure this really got the creative juices flowing. something like zoom jokes might be insanely played out but if anyone has a fresh take it’s sunny.
They did “The Gang Texts” in 2019 and it was phenomenal, they can do common ideas better than most.
In the header picture, Dee looks more like Missi Pyle than Kaitlin Olson.
Right! All the rest of them look great, except for her. Plus a huge missed opportunity to bring back Crazy Paddy…
Dee takes balls to the face like a champ. No pun intended.Or maybe it was intended. Whatever.
Here’s the full image since they didn’t link it.
Covid’s over. Don’t care.
Okay, Mac.
Ron DeSantis over here
You lost get over it lol
And Shitty Pants Joe’s a Year 1 lame duck! Get over it! Trump 2024!
You’re not an intelligent person, and no one values anything you have to say.
And your shit is tired. Put it to bed already.
Hush now, the grownups are talking.
Even if COVID were over—it’s not—you and your people made a virus, a global pandemic political. That will never be over, and if you were capable of shame, you would feel ashamed of that for the rest of your days.
you and your peopleAnd the Fremen shall rule the Universe!
Oh, god. Please, come correct if you’re going to come at all.And I’ll save you the trouble of your next reply: come is not cum.
It is if I come to your mother and cum on her face.
Every member of the gang is susceptible to QAnon. But they believe, and rightly so, that Mac’s father is JFK Jr.
If Frank was more computer savvy I’d think he was Q himself.
Frank doesn’t believe in Q but he sells counterfeit t-shirts. Charlie doesn’t believe in Q because he believes in Z which takes all the conspiracies even further. Dennis pretends to be Q to pick-up women. Z is actually Mac and Dee getting Charlie to do all their bar chores, they aren’t even posting things on the internet, it’s just a word doc they leave open on his computer.
I can see all of this. But who’s Frank? I haven’t watched past season one. (Not really)
Frank made a fortune selling deworming agents to alt-right bros.
Cricket caused COVID.
Cricket is likely revealed as patient zero.
Crickets Chinese Vacation.
With a 12/1 start, I’m really hoping for another Sunny Xmas special! We haven’t had one since season 6.
I have been waiting for this. The only show that will mock covid in a fun way. The first episode is callee 2020 a Year in Review so I expect Frank to steal toilet paper and take over the capital.
Charlie Catches a Leprechaun: In Space
I find it astounding that this show is still on the air. I was on the road for my company in 2009 and FX was playing reruns nonstop to the playup to their premiere for season four (?). I watched it nonstop, for two weeks. Haven’t seen an episode since. It’s like a version of Seinfeld that I don’t like. It makes no sense.
I’ll put on my finest quarantine suit
