Each time it seems like It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s coming to an end, fans are reminded that the show could easily go on forever. In fact, McElhenney told The A.V. Club in 2019 that Larry David advised him to “never stop” and “just keep doing it” because if they ever did a final episode, [fans] will “just destroy you for it.” So, while we haven’t had a new episode in two years, the Paddy’s Pub gang is coming back soon.

Both the Instagram page for the FXX show and McElhenney himself shared a sneak peek of the upcoming 15th season that just wrapped filming; the picture features Charlie (Charlie Day), Mac (McElhenney), and Dennis (Glenn Howerton). Charlie looks the same and Dennis just looks just slightly more unsettling than usual, with his hair combed back, giving some Norman Bates vibes.

But let’s talk about Mac’s new look: he’s sporting two earrings, long hair, and a horseshoe mustache. It’s the most Philly dirtbag look Mac’s sported on the show yet. McElhenney’s no stranger to drastically changing his appearance for the character either, so this transformation—though very amusing—is tame in comparison.

The actor and show creator decided to gain 50 pounds for season 7. His weight gain isn’t addressed until the season’s 10th episode, “How Mac Got Fat.” McElhenney then took the bit to another extreme, getting jacked. He broke down how he accomplished this feat in a Men’s Health piece.

There’s no word yet on when It’s Always Sunny’s season 15 will arrive, but, on the plus side, this gives plenty of time for fans of the show to watch Mythic Quest, created by Day, McElhenney (who also is the show’s star), and It’s Always Sunny writer and executive producer Megan Ganz. This Apple TV+ series is slightly less edgy and dark than the FXX show, but will surely win over It’s Always Sunny fans.

His explanation on how he got in that shape (ripped and jacked) is the best. Sure you can look like Brad Pitt in Fight Club: just be super wealthy and more importantly be able to dedicate 6 to 9 months into fitness with no other lifestyle. Completely normal.

Don’t forget the dietitian, personal trainer, and expensed food budget!

    • meinstroopwafel-av says:

Even then there’s lots of arguments about whether he’s juicing. The strong likelihood is that at the very least most to all of the Hollywood “I got this way in a few months” guys are on some serious gear, so even if McElhenney is being totally truthful and is just dedicated, it’s sort of reached the point where you’d be a fool to trust anything any of these people say.

I don’t know, when I was younger, living with my parents, and had much, MUCH, more time on my hands I got jacked by working out 5x a week for about 6 months and I didn’t juice. Also my period stopped. I didn’t go about it in a super healthy way.

        • oh-thepossibilities-av says:

I lost 130 lbs in a little over a year… I also did not go about it in a completely healthy way. It was diet and exercise, but during the last 6 months I was doing keto and had a really unhealthy relationship with food mentally and I ended up losing a lot of muscle (because while I learned how to lose weight based on caloric intake, I didn’t really understand how the body processes macronutrients and the amount of protein you need). After learning more though, I’ve been able to put on ~20 lbs of muscle with lifting and protein intake. I’ve also fallen in love with baking though, so I’m not ripped (I’ve put on like 30 lbs total). But I think the point is, in agreement with you, it is possible if you put your mind to it.

          • Harold_Ballz-av says:

Congrats on the weight loss! I hear you about the healthy vs unhealthy ways of doing it, and I’m glad you found a way to balance things out.

I didn’t juice. Also my period stopped. So you didn’t juice in more ways than one. I’m so sorry.

          Same being young was awesome

I don’t even think anyone would really care at this point. Perhaps the movie studios would get flack if it was publicly acknowledged that any male playing a superhero, besides Robert Downey Jr. or Benedict Cumberbatch, is essentially expected to take a bunch of steroids to swell up for their role, but it would be refreshing if they just admitted it.

      • zxcvzxcvzxcv-av says:

I believe McElhenney has very heavily hinted at juicing in one interview or another. Steroids have a bad public perception, but considering they’re cheap, safe, easily available, and incredibly effective, you would be a sucker not to take that shortcut and make twice the progress in half the time.

Pretty much any “muscular” celebrity in Hollywood takes steroids, which in turns heavily distorts the public perception of what a natural body build should look like since your average person will associate steroids with freaks like Ronnie Coleman rather than your Chris Pratts and Michael B Jordans.

Ironically enough, Brad Pitt in Fight Club is mostly just very lean, but he’s a pretty good standard for what to expect from ‘natty’ physique on a regular actor.

There was that joke on Parks and Rec after Chris Pratt was cast as Starlord, and he explained his new jacked-ness by saying he just stopped drinking like 10 beers every day. That always seemed like a sorta funny throwaway gag, but I gotta say, after seriously changing my diet I lost like 20 lbs in a month, doing almost no exercise, and once I started exercising I could easily put on muscle. And during this time all I was thinking was how I wished I were an actor prepping for a role and could just devote all my time to getting in super good shape and probably wouldn’t even be that hard. The hardest part was cutting out donuts. The exercise part seems easy. And I think I’m just barely older than Mac.
All that to say, McElhenney may be juicing, but with his resources he probably doesn’t need to. I think it was probably way more strenuous on his body to turn into Fat Mac than it was to get to Fit Mac.

      • daddddd-av says:

my friends are for some reason adamant that people in Hollywood aren’t juicing. their argument is just “it’s too dangerous, they care about their health, and they have so much free time to do it” lol. of course, i don’t have any hard evidence otherwise so my argument was shit

Yeah, if getting fit was my full-time job and I had all the resources I needed to get there (trainer, nutritionist, etc) I could look like Bree Larson! Of course, I’d probably kill someone for some ice cream by the end of it…

  • smittywerbenjagermanjensen22-av says:

Kaitlin Olson for my money is the best sitcom actress alive. Such class, such elegance

  • daddddd-av says:

the closeup pic is even better

  • mykinjaa-av says:

    A regular Joe Piscopo.

  • mortimercommafamousthe-av says:

I hope the show goes on long enough that we see Dennis transition to full-on botched plastic surgery victim.

  • pizzapartymadness-av says:

When is Gritty going to be on Always Sunny though?

  • soylent-gr33n-av says:

He looks like that guy from Lord of the Rings, Vidgio Morgenstein.

  • drips-av says:

SO the running rumor right now is that this is all for an episode which will be basically “What if the gang never met”. Which is why Mac is so drastically different and Dennis is clearly “aged up” in the face and hair and more bland in attire, if you look at other pictures of him from this.

  • bc222-av says:

Having grown up in the far Philly suburbs, Mac’s look is the most realistic southeastern PA look I have ever seen on the show. I went to high school and junior high with so many people wearing that kind of Starter jackets. And I don’t know why, but the Charlotte Hornet colors was very popular as well. It was the early 90s I guess, when teal/purple were all the rage. But jesus, this look is spot on, with the hair especially.

  • nefelonious-av says:

he is looking just like a young Luther….i wonder if he is trying to reconnect with his father.

  • haodraws-av says:

A new season of Sunny is always nice, but honestly I’d rather see Mythic Quest gets a Season 3 ASAP. That show surprisingly jumped ahead of many others in my personal ranking.

    • jeffreywinger-av says:

I finally watched it the other week and was practically blown away by how good it is. I also demand more ASAP

    • bc222-av says:

Right!? I remember season 1 getting middling reviews, so I kind of ignored it, then when season 2 started getting raves I figured I’d check it out, and I tore through both seasons in about a week. I loved the standalone/flashback eps so much too. They really let themselves explore all kinds of spaces I didn’t expect them to go to.
      Also… DINNNNNAH PPAAAHHHTYY!

      • briliantmisstake-av says:

“They really let themselves explore all kinds of spaces I didn’t expect them to go to.”This is what really impressed me. They do some more standard comedy stuff and do it very well, which would be fine on it’s own, but they also aren’t afraid really change things up for an episode or make an unexpected choice.

        • bc222-av says:

Speaking of unexpected choices, I was very pleased when they cast Shelley Hennig as both AE and her daughter. I thought she killed as AE and was very pleasantly surprised to see her in the next, non-flashback ep. And man, I never woulda imagined William Hurt as the older Peter, but that was a great bit of casting too.

          • briliantmisstake-av says:

She was great. I always liked her on Teen Wolf.

          • haodraws-av says:

I’ve never seen her before, but Shelley Hennig stole that episode like it was nobody’s business(though Josh Brenner also put in a great performance channeling F. Murray Abraham perfectly). The casting is top notch with this show, William Hurt as an older Michael Cassidy just fits nicely like two puzzle pieces.

          • bc222-av says:

Yeah, the “hot girl who wears glasses and like sci-fi” could’ve gone horribly wrong, but Shelley Hennig really nailed it. Never seen her before either, but was massively impressed.
And I never in a million years would’ve thought of William Hurt if you asked me to cast an old Michael Cassidy but it really was pitch perfect.

15 seasons?!? I honestly thought this show ended years ago! Everyone I would hear talking about it just sounded like they were just discovering it, not continuing it. Damn…

  • gargsy-av says:

“McElhenney then took the bit to another extreme, getting jacked.”

You’re such a fan of the show that you know he was jacked from seasons 1-6 and then jacked from seasons 8 onward, right?

  • gruesome-twosome-av says:

I’m guessing the new season will premiere in January. Can’t wait, you jabronis.

Right there with you, my man.  Came across an article about Always Sunny and jumped on board.  Yes, I am old, but proud.

  • comet831-av says:

Why do I keep thinking this show ended years ago?

  • mikebalroop-av says:
