Jonathan Majors’ trial for charges of assault and aggravated harassment has been delayed. While proceedings for the Manhattan-based hearing were supposed to begin today, Judge Michael Gaffey announced that the commencement date had been pushed back a month because the prosecution needed more time for discovery. The trial will now begin September 6 (per Deadline).

The Creed III actor arrived in court today for the hearing which lasted “literally two-minute[s],” per Deadline. As with his last appearance in court for a short, pre-trial hearing on June 2o, Majors was accompanied by actress Meagan Good and his criminal defense lawyer Priya Chaudhry. The actor approached the bench holding a notebook and a bible.

“The people are not ready for trial today,” an assistant D.A. reportedly told the judge in reference to their need to delay. Gaffey responded that the prosecution had a deadline and “time will continue to run against the people,” which Deadline notes “was delivered more like a reminder than any sort of threat.”

Majors was initially arrested in Manhattan on March 25 after an alleged domestic dispute with his ex-girlfriend. At the time of arrest, the then-unnamed woman accused him of twisting her arm, striking her head, and pushing her into a vehicle “so violently, she fell on the pavement,” according to NPR. If found guilty, Majors faces up to a year behind bars.

From the beginning, Chaudhry has insisted that Majors’ ex-girlfriend—who was granted a full temporary order of protection forbidding any contact between Majors and herself—was the real perpetrator, calling the whole affair a “witch hunt” motivated by “racial bias” against her client.

In a statement issued just after today’s brief hearing, Chaudhry claimed that police were prepared to arrest Majors’ accuser as soon as she “sets foot back in New York.”

“For an excruciating four months, Jonathan Majors, the real victim in this shameful ordeal, has had his life, career, and reputation torn apart,” she continued. “Yet he remains unwavering in his determination to be absolved from this harrowing ordeal.” Deadline notes, however, that “no charges have been laid against the women in the months since the incident” and the NYPD has “no plans” to do so, despite Chaudhry’s statement.

I hope he plans on doing that face throughout.

He always looks like he’s just spotted a particularly delicious-looking piece of pie he can eat.

Combination of surprise and “I feel I should say something but will restrain myself”I do hope someone has since told him to knock it off.

It’s so sad that only a few people will ever know how brilliant this comment is.

I’m willing to be enlightened, if possible. That’s one doozy of a comment, and I’m curious about it.

Go play Disco Elysium. Nothing is true, weird arty CRPGs are permitted.

I’ll need to get some way to play it first (unless it runs on two-year-old Chromebooks), but a cursory glance of the search results for that game does pique my interest…

I’m glad you asked! It’s a screenshot from the game Disco Elysium, a text-heavy point-and-click adventure set in a world ravaged by capitalism. The protagonist begins the game so hungover that his identity has shattered into a dozen or so reflections of his drives and desires, and the story changes based on the attention you give to each of them (here, the aspect “Volition” is featured). Can’t recommend it enough if you’re enthralled by the verbiage in that shot – the whole game is that well-written.As for the burn itself – the protagonist also begins the game with a horrible expression on his face inspired by a mixture of grandiosity and insecurity that you can either get rid of or stick with for the rest of the game. So a very funny parallel to Majors’ own.

It sold 2.6 million copies at last count.

I think Disco Elysium is a fucking masterpiece but there’s this very strange idea that its an obscure indie darling and not a monumental success that was plastered for months across all the gaming journals and has a massive fandom.

I know how popular it is. But given the low comment section engagement on this site, I figured only a few people would see this who recognized it.

This seems like an own goal on the part of the prosecution, but it also seems like a lot of stuff is happening behind the curtain, so maybe there’s a good reason why they’re not ready. The Deadline article mentions that the defense withdrew documents disputing the allegations a few months ago. I don’t know how rare that is, but it sounds like they’re trying to attack the victim in any way they can, and keep being rebuffed. It might be that they’ve deliberately delayed discovery as much as they could to hamper the prosecution. On another note, it’s extremely surprising that Majors found someone willing to stand next to him here who isn’t on his legal team. I don’t know much about Meagan Good, but I hope for her sake that he’s that good of a friend to her to warrant the public support. You probably won’t see Michael B Jordan standing beside him anytime soon.

I’m pretty sure it’s also just normal, tbh. These sorts of postponements and such happen all the time. Most people just aren’t paying attention to the day in happenings of a trial.

      • bcfred2-av says:

I know it’s normal but it still amazes me how easy it seems to be to kick trials months down the road.  “We’d like to request a continuance your honor.”  “Sure thing.  How’s February 2025?”

  • iambrett-av says:

He might be innocent, and Disney doesn’t seem to be rushing to cut him loose. But his lawyer is nuts – I’ll guess we’ll find out if she’s still a good lawyer from the results.

    • killa-k-av says:

I have no idea what happened in that taxi, but yeah, his lawyer is doing a great job imitating the lawyers for Weinstein, Cosby, Trump, et al. If the goal is to make me dislike Majors by association, it’s working.

  • jodyjm13-av says:

I’m sure there was a perfectly rational legal reason for Majors to be carrying a Bible as he approached the bench, and it wasn’t just a ploy to generate sympathy from a subset of the population.

  • djclawson-av says:

If his lawyers try to make the argument that he was the victim, the prosecution should just play a few minutes of Creed 3 and give the jury a look.
