Some parents offer support through positive affirmation. A simple “Good game, sport,” or “Great work, kiddo,” can really help keep any young person from the devil’s temptations. Positive reinforcement builds confidence, and confidence creates success. That’s the American way, but it’s not the way of Patrick Warburton’s parents. The parents of Joe Swanson do not subscribe to that New Age feel-goodery. Celebrating the show’s 25th Anniversary with the rest of the cast at the Paley Center, Patrick Warburton let it be known that no one hates Family Guy more than his own flesh and blood. That hate has only grown in the quarter century since its premiere. “They hate the show even more today than they did 25 years ago.”

Warburton tells the crowd that they have a different moral compass than that of Seth MacFarlane’s whacky world of cutaway gags and giant chickens. His father spent three months in a monastery and “almost became a monk.” His mother, who belonged to the American Television Council, used to go “around the neighborhood when I was 13 years old passing out pamphlets on the sins of masturbation.” While a member of the American Television Council, Mrs. Warburton and her fellow Council members also attempted to get the show canceled. Ironically, Warburton’s Family Guy money supported his parents, leading Warburton to accuse his mother of “laundering money” to herself.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the gallons of haterade being drunk by the Warburtons. In 2013, the actor sat down for a “Random Roles” with The A.V. Club, revealing that he has “two parents—honest to God—that couldn’t be more disappointed that I’m on this show.” Ultimately, it doesn’t matter because he’s done apologizing for Family Guy.

She’s just pissed that he’s no longer playing that blond, butter cream-frosted Swedish murder machine and Zep fan Brock fucking Samson.

What I’m getting from this is that Disney should’ve gotten Warburton for Thunderbolt Ross instead of Harrison Ford.

    • yellowfoot-av says:

Multiple roles aren’t impossible, but Warburton is already an established pillar of the MCU as Holographic Daddy, General Rick Stoner

He looks like he should be playing a dodgy admiral in a Donald P. Bellisario show in that photo. You know. The one who looks to be a hero but it turns out his hardass ways led to the deaths of four sailors.

    • nilus-av says:

He will never top his most iconic Disney role so I don’t see the point

Is this where the “David Puddy is religious” storyline came from?

I’ve watched a couple of the more recent episodes. Good lord, it deserves all the hate you can give it.

Its OK to be wrong once in a while.

I generally like the show, but the last 2 seasons have been really dire.

    • Caniborrowafeeling-av says:

Then you must’ve missed the recent episode where Lois became a substitute teacher. Uproarious.

In my opinion, the last few years haven’t been that bad…well, not counting the most recent season (22), which just wrapped up. Dreadful batch of episodes unfortunately, it might actually be the worst season of the whole show (and I imagine the writer’s strike didn’t do it any favors). But outside of that, there’s been some good stuff as of late. Season 21’s “The Munchurian Candidate” is a particular standout IMO, highly worth watching. “The Stewaway”, “Adoptation”, “Bend or Blockbuster”, and “Oscars Guy” (mostly the first segment) are others from that season that I remember enjoying quite a bit. I’ve especially liked most of the recent Lois episodes, I’m a fan of the direction the show’s taken her in. When she’s written well (and isn’t just “bored naggy housewife who hates her life”) she’s kind of a mix of Marge Simpson and Francine Smith, which can be a lot of fun. Alex Borstein deserves a lot more credit than she gets.I don’t blame anybody for disliking the series, and it definitely still has a ton of problems, but I think it’s a bit overhated these days. The comment section under every old FG clip on Youtube is just 100 people saying “ah yes, before the show turned into poorly-written, eDgY slop, and when Peter Griffin was a humble Family Guy and not an insane serial killer,” and so on and so forth – and I’m guessing that most of those people haven’t watched a new episode since like 2012. The newer episodes are way less reliant on shock/offensive humor, and overlong gags, and pop culture references, and shitting on Meg, and all of the other crap that defined the middle years of the show. It’s not high art or anything, but it’s not irredeemable either.HOWEVER, I will say that the show continues to rely on one of my absolute least-favorite kinds of FG jokes: the narrator gags. You know, when the show randomly pauses, and the narrator (it’s always the same narrator voice) says something like “the proceeding jokes was brought to you by Red Robin. Red Robin: the restaurant that your uncle goes to when he wants to spend $20 on a mediocre burger!” I just made that one up, but every episode has at least one version of that joke, and they’re always terrible.

I mean I’ve recently had a great time going back and watching the Blue Harvest/Something Something Dark Side/It’s a Trap Star Wars homage trilogies on Hulu, they’re a great time. Like musical theater, you can tell Seth loves the genre so much that he recreated entire scenes and dialogue with the actual John Williams music, thrown together with the typical Family Guy humor. Stuff like making the big chicken that Peter fights intermittently the Boba Fett of that universe is just great.

At least his parents probably have actual reasons for hating the show.
My parents would have just said “you’re not watching that stupid crap” without having seen any of it themselves.

  • turbotastic-av says:

Patrick should show his parents some of the other work he’s been doing. With the right selections they’ll forget about Family Guy real quick.

    • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

I like Warburton, but he’s a lot like H. Jon Benjamin in that he really doesn’t do voices. Brock from The Venture Bros, Steve Barkin from Kim Possible, his version of the The Tick from the earlier live action version of The Tick are essentially the same voice.

      • apocalypseplease-av says:

Benjamin’s voice as Jason from Home Movies is a little different, but yes, his characters do tend to sound the same.

        • tvcr-av says:

Don’t forget Miss LaBonz from Bob’s Burgers.

        • liebkartoffel-av says:

If you watch the Archer/Bob’s Burgers “crossover” you notice just how subtly the distinct the “Bob” and “Archer” voices really are. It’s actually quite impressive.

        • prozacelf2-av says:

Not entirely related but I always find it hilarious that the same guy who does Snot’s voice on American Dad is also Metatron in Supernatural

          • apocalypseplease-av says:

One I find hilarious: The same voice actress who did Ed from Cowboy Bebop’s dubbed voice was also the voice of Gaz from Invader Zim. The two characters may share a love of technology, but their personalities could not be any more different.

      • crews200pt2-av says:

        H. Jon Benjamin is at least three slightly different voices on Bob’s Burgers.  So that’s something.

      • learn-2-fly-av says:

True, but you its really nice when they at least have characters that they get so in to that it still feels different. Once they get typecast as the same character over and over (which Warburton tends to) it all definitely blends together.

      • monsterdook-av says:

I was on a freelance gig and was given a couple hours on a last minute assignment – to design and animate some characters a VO actor did on the spot in a studio interview. I get the footage and it’s H Jon Benjamin. Super fun project, and I wish I had had more time, but oh man the voices were pretty much the same. But, I mean, that’s kind of the charm of H Jon Benjamin.

      • rafterman00-av says:

Oh crap, I forgot he was in Kim Possible.

      • nilus-av says:

Its such a distinct voice that works so well for a certain model of character that I am okay with it.  I couldn’t imagine a different Brock Samson

      • dresstokilt-av says:

I’ve found that most actors who go into voice acting as well don’t tend to change their voice, because it tends to be very recognizable, and you’re hiring the actor, not a guy who does voices – just like you’re hiring their recognizable face. I’m thinking people like Patton Oswalt and Clancy Brown.

        • crews200pt2-av says:

Seth Rogan has said that he doesn’t do voices for animated movies, when you hire him you’re just going to get Seth Rogan. And it oddly seems to be working out in his favor.

  • libsexdogg-av says:

They, like us all, are just mad that The Tick never got a fair chance.

    • apocalypseplease-av says:

Well, you know what they say: When society says “jump”, we say “pass the salt”!

    • milligna000-av says:

It got more than a fair chance in animation, where it worked much better than both live action attempts. I’m glad Ben Edlund managed to use The Tick to get into the bizness. He’s a good egg.
