As proof that maybe this whole rap beef thing has gone a little too far, a security guard was shot and seriously injured outside Drake’s Toronto mansion early Tuesday. Per CBC, police could not confirm if Drake was home at the time of the 2 a.m. shooting, but he and his team are reportedly cooperating with investigators.

The guard was found unconscious with a gunshot wound in the upper chest when officers arrived at Drake’s Bridle Path neighborhood compound Tuesday morning. He was taken to a nearby hospital “in serious condition,” where he underwent surgery, Toronto Police Inspector Paul Krawczyk told CBC News. However, while some reports noted that the attack was a drive-by shooting, authorities could not confirm. Krawczyk said a vehicle was involved, but he has neither a description of the car nor the suspects inside. The inspector said they collected video evidence of the incident and expect to find more in the investigation.

Though there is “very limited” information on the shooting and police could “not speak to a motive,” it’s difficult not to connect this with the ongoing spats in which Drake has recently become embroiled. The public diss-track-off between Kendrick Lamar and Drake engulfed popular culture this past week, making it the first time in what feels like a century that American internet users discussed a musician other than Taylor Swift. Lamar and Drake spent the weekend releasing track after track to humiliate each other and win public support for their side. The argument left off on May 5 with the release of Drake’s “The Heart Part 6,” in which the rapper argued he’s “way too famous” to be arrested for alleged sexual misconduct with teenage girls. Moreover, the cover image of one of Lamar’s anti-Drake diss tracks, “Not Like Us,” shows a satellite image of Drake’s home with ren indicator pins dotting the estate’s roof. Still, as of now, there is no publicly known motive for the shooting.

“The argument left off on May 5 with the release of Drake’s “The Heart Part 6,” in which the rapper argued he’s “way too famous” to be arrested for alleged sexual misconduct with teenage girls.”Wow, that’s not what he said at all.

Sure, but are you really expecting better from this hack? Paste could have pruned ALL of the deadwood when they took the AV Club off Herb Spanfeller’s hands, but they didn’t.

      • killa-k-av says:

Yeah, for as much as Barsanti was the focus a lot of the ire from the commentariat, he was far from the only one crankin’ out half-thought out pieces with questionable takes and aimless snark.

        • ghboyette-av says:

And he had a snappy name!

        • justin-queso-av says:

There’d be no one left if they shitcanned everyone guilty of that. Not even the Mary Kate Carrbot.

        • thepetemurray-darlingbasinauthorithy-av says:

Yeah, that was half the point of moving to LA: to simply make it less and less enticing for people like Rife and Dowd to keep working here – so they could switch to having full-time clickbaiters. It’s not that the AV Club is shitty because they accidentally hired bad writers – they deliberately sought out those writers, because clicks. Barsanti was the worst, no doubt, but Mary Kate gives him a run their for their money, to the point where I don’t just wonder if she’s Sam in drag sometimes who did it so he could collect two paycheques.Anyway, I suppose Justin Timberlake’s happy there’s a distraction now.

“If I was fucking young girls I promise I’d have been arrestedI’m way too famous for this shit you just suggested”That is verbatim what was being quoted from The Heart Part 6. In what world is that not what he said? Sure, he said other stuff, but that is exactly what he said.

      • antsnmyeyes-av says:

The quote in the article is literally the exact opposite of what Drake is saying. This article: “the rapper argued he’s “way too famous” to be arrested for alleged sexual misconduct with teenage girls.”What Drake actually rapped:“If I was (expletive) young girls, I’d have been arrested,” Drake raps in the song. “I’m way too famous for this (expletive) you just suggested.”

        • yellowfoot-av says:

Is the idea that he’s so famous that he wouldn’t be able to get away
with it, with the added scrutiny that fame carries? I’m not saying
you’re wrong, I’m just having trouble parsing what he’s trying to say.

          • killa-k-av says:

That’s what Drake’s claiming, yeah. Maybe it’s a Canadian thing, but when I heard that line, I rolled my eyes. History’s full of convicted people who used their fame to get away with shit for as long as they did.(I have no opinion about Drake himself)

          • antsnmyeyes-av says:

Basically. He’s saying he WOULD be arrested because he’s too famous to fly under the radar if he was actually doing these things.Which is the opposite sentiment the article attributes to him.

        • suburbandorm-av says:

I’m a moron. You’re totally right, I completely misunderstood what the article thought Drake was saying.

      • killa-k-av says:

Nvm didn’t see your other comment sorry

  • suzzi-av says:

I hope Kendrick is happy! His dumb ass started all of this nonsense.

    • bowie-walnuts-av says:

Did Kendrick really start all this “nonsense” with a few Drake-directed barbs in a guest verse on a single song from a Future/Metro Boomin’ album? Me thinks not.

      • disqusdrew-av says:

FWIW, and its probably not much considering what I’m about to say is coming from Twitter sleuths, but this shooting could be related to Drake’s separate beef with The Weeknd

      • chris-finch-av says:

Exactly. I tried to express this in another comment and maybe failed, but it’s pretty presumptive to assume the shooting is feud-related. I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter online about how rappers “used to have one another killed,” and beyond Tupac…where are the receipts on that? It’s nightly news style fearmongering.

  • cscurrie-av says:

pretty awful. This whole drama has gone too far, regardless of who was responsible for the gunman being there.

  • thegobhoblin-av says:

    Someone’s gonna be sooree.

  • badkuchikopi-av says:

I haven’t been following this, but I’m curious:Moreover, the cover image of one of Lamar’s anti-Drake diss tracks, “Not Like Us,” shows a satellite image of Drake’s home with [red] indicator pins dotting the estate’s roof. What is the joke/insult here?

    • gretaherwig-av says:

I think it’s supposed to resemble one of those six offender maps

    • chris-finch-av says:

The markers match those on a map indicating sex offenders. Lamar’s song doubles down on well-known rumors that Drake pursues/dates underage women, and the art corroborates that theme.

    • captainbubb-av says:

What lorem ipsum said, and also it goes with Kendrick saying Drake’s crew is full of predators too.

      • mr-rubino-av says:

It’s alright. We now know that was all a social experiment for the express purpose of baiting Kendrick into repeating all the things, thus objectively making Drake the winner.

        • indyit2-av says:

Do you really buy everything Drake said in Heart Part 6? He both calls the people feeding kendrick information clowns whilst claiming he and his team were feeding the info… Whilst I accept maybe the daughter story was misinformation that Drake spread, why would he and his entourage willingly drop info that they’re predators? Seems like a dumb move. Even the daughter thing is a dumb move.He denies the predator stuff, says he’s too famous to get away with it, despite there being many examples of very famous people getting found out for it years later. I think he shoulda been faster with claiming he planted all that stuff and proven it, I think he’s just running with that story now. Although kendricks album art with tbr maybach glove definitely seemed a little sketch, it seemed like a rick ross reference, but again maybe just coincidence that drakes trying to run with.

  • chris-finch-av says:

Ughhhhhh good job feeding a certain narrative about black culture AVClub. “We don’t have enough info but we sure are glad to stoke white fears of black violence.” Y’all oughta be ashamed already, but this is a new fucking low. Good job.

    • yllehs-av says:

Are white people really afraid of getting caught in the crossfire at Drake’s or Kendrick Lamar’s mansions?

    • whompwomp-av says:

Yes, when people were ignoring R Kelly’s behavior that was a great service to all of the young Black women in the Chicago area. No one should report on possible predators, or newsworthy things like gun crime in a city that allegedly has no hand guns.

    • tomatofacial-av says:

No mention of the race of either victim or any alleged perps, but thank you for confirming your own bias by assuming it.Won’t somebody please think of the millionaire wannabe thugs!?!

  • popculturesurvivor-av says:

    An enormous mansion in a hyper-exclusive gated community in…let’s see…Toronto? NOW THAT’S HIP-HOP!

    • canadian-heritage-minute-av says:

Toronto is the 4th largest city in North America, with plenty of history to it and its fair share of crime. SORRY it doesn’t have it’s own…let’s see… kind of pizza or whatever a city needs to be considered ‘hip hop’

    • dk1979-av says:

We really going down this (bridle) path ?Do you need a lesson about Toronto?

      • popculturesurvivor-av says:

“Do you need a lesson about Toronto?” sounds like a good line from which to launch into a four-minute tribute-in-rhyme to the city. Maybe there’s a rapper out there who already done that, though. My guess is that it wouldn’t brag about being home to the Maple Leafs.

  • haodraws-av says:

Apparently it’s likely to be retaliation for a separate issue with the Weeknd, but… I hope they don’t stop until that pedo Drake is 6 feet under. Keep going!

  • wellgruntled-av says:

Both of them suck and “beefs” involving shitty poetry mumbled over generic beats are pathetic. Grow up.
