Seth MacFarlane is a controversial figure. For every Family Guy fan, there’s a detractor. Such is the nature of comedy. But there’s one thing that fans and skeptics can agree on: MacFarlane’s stuffed animal creation, Ted, isn’t your granddaddy’s teddy bear. Uh, yeah, this bear fucks.

And when this bear isn’t ripping bongs, staging a lavish Busby Berkeley musical numbers, or helping his buddy John (Mark Wahlberg) get laid, he’s making millions of dollars. Combined, the two Teds made more than $750 million worldwide. However, while Ted became a surrogate for an audience looking to kick back, crack open a Sam Adams, and watch the Red Sox, the 2015 sequel made only half as much as its predecessor three years earlier. It was time for Universal to put Ted back in the toy box as MacFarlane went on to make The Orville, several more seasons of Family Guy, and three big band records. But you can only keep that bear in hibernation for so long.

The world is overcoming our collective Ted-related hangover, so Peacock is bringing back everyone’s favorite C Bear And Jamal knockoff, and MacFarlane’s going to help. NBC/Universal announced today that MacFarlane would reprise the role of Ted for a TV series based on the films. Since MacFarlane lives longer days than the rest of us, he’ll also direct, write, and co-showrun the series. Joining MacFarlane are Giorgia Whigham (13 Reasons Why), Max Burkholder (Parenthood) and Scott Grimes (Oppenheimer, The Orville)

But what of Mark Wahlberg? Will the star of the saintly feel-good movie about a boxer who becomes a priest return for another hit? In short, no. At least not now. Perhaps, he’s having too much fun starring in movies with raving anti-Jew Oscar-winner Mel Gibson to spend any time drinking beers with his old bear. But worry not about the Ted timeline because this Ted will be a prequel. Here’s the synopsis:

It’s 1993 and Ted the bear’s moment of fame has passed, leaving him living with his best friend, 16-year-old John Bennett, who lives in a working-class Boston home with his parents and cousin. Ted may not be the best influence on John, but when it comes right down to it, Ted’s willing to go out on a limb to help his friend and his family.

Finally, a chance to see John and Ted pick up their first dime bag in Dorchester together. There’s still no word on when the show will be released, but we all know what to say if the show stinks: “You think that’s bad, remember when they made a TV show out of Ted.”

Holy crap, somebody else remembers C-Bear and Jamal…

How can Seth MacFarlane join the cast, when he is already the creator and star of the show? the headline hurts my head due to how wrong it is.

Keanu Reeves didn’t star in the Bill and Ted TV show. Robert Altman didn’t direct a single episode of the hit TV show based on his film M*A*S*H.

Without getting into any discussion over quality/humor/etc.This was in doubt? The guy absolutely central to the production with a habit of inserting himself into pretty much everything he does?

“For every Family Guy fan, there’s a detractor.” There is?!  Maybe I’m in a fans only bubble because I never want to meet anyone that doesn’t love this show. Nor have I.

Man, it hasn’t been this unclear that someone was joking since…[INSERT NON SEQUITUR CUTAWAY GAG HERE]

Well, now you can remember that time you met someone who hates Family Guy.

Like The Simpsons, steep quality drop-off after a few seasons. Basically the Star Wars family guy Blue Harvest trilogy is when I pull the plug after that cuz doesn’t really get batter but it’s been on Adult Swim Canada lately winding all the way back to the early seasons. The joke they made when uncancelled was freakin’ gold

This is an oudated take, Family Guy got over its hump years ago, has embraced its own ludicrousness and the last few seasons have maybe been the best ones yet. American Dad on the other hand has gone down the toilet, I suspect because the showrunners have been hiring ex-Simpsons writers.

Never say never. Family Guy blows.

Wait, wait, wait…  Those movies made how much money?!!?  What the ever living fuck?

Ted had a nice rhythm and energy. It was fun to watch and the jokes were well-timed and landed. I didn’t see the second one but remember laughing a lot at the first one. MUCH more fun than hip A24 comedies with a 90-minute wry grin. I like a sensible chuckle too, but we don’t have enough go-for-broke comedies.

His Orville series is actually really good. It’s a love letter to scifi

Why are we acting like it’s weird that noted hate-crime enthusiast Mark Wahlberg is enjoying being in a movie with noted anti-Semite Mel Gibson?Anyway, no to this movie.  I liked Family Guy and I even like Seth McFarlane, but Ted never held any interest from me.  Good luck to him, though.

  • ofaycanyouseeme-av says:

    …WHY?

  • tomracine-av says:

I’d be more enthused if McFarlane didn’t steal ideas from other artists and tweak them just enough to avoid lawsuits.

  • hootiehoo2-av says:

I like McFarlane and really like Family guy from like 2007 till whenever the and then their were none episode hit. That was a the last great episode they did.Really enjoyed Ted but never watched the sequel.  I will always respect McFarlane for calling out Weinstein at the Oscars while those dorks in the audience just yucked it up while they knew deep down inside what Harvey was doing.

Tried to rewatch Ted recently; doesn’t hold up. I thought it was pretty funny back when it came out (judge me!) but yeah, trying to rewatch it now a lot of the humor relied on shock jokes, some pretty un-PC language, etc. that I guess I’ve grown out of. Hopefully Seth has learned a thing or two since then and this could end up being decent.

  • mcmf-av says:

I think people are nuts if they didn’t think Ted was hilarious.  Part two not as much.  But they guy jump roping on coke was pretty funny.

  • gcodori-av says:

This should also be titled “The Orville” is over (after it airs on HULU this year). Seth also hired Scott Grimes from The Orville, if you need more evidence.  Unless they are going to film two shows at once with the same actors…
