The rumors are true: Ted Lasso’s third season may very well be its last. We’ve known for a while that the series was intended as a trilogy from the beginning, but the runaway success of the show opened the door to the possibility of expanding the creators’ original vision.

Apparently, though, the plan didn’t change going into the third season’s writer’s room. Asked by the Sunday Times if the finale was imminent, writer and star Brett Goldstein confirmed: “We are writing it like that. It was planned as three. Spoiler alert—everyone dies.”

Very funny, Roy Kent. But seriously, the show’s creators never wavered much on wrapping up after three seasons, although they all acknowledged that the popularity and critical acclaim was an unforeseen factor. In June 2021, Jason Sudeikis told Entertainment Weekly that “the story that’s being told–that three-season arc–is one that I see, know, and understood. I’m glad that they are willing to pay for those three seasons. As far as what happens after that, who knows? I don’t know.”

Writer and co-star Brendan Hunt added, “I think it would be pretty cool if, in the face of how much everyone likes this show, that we stick to our guns and really just do three seasons.”

One person who would be happy to keep the gravy train going is Bill Lawrence, who shared with The Hollywood Reporter in October 2021 that he would “love to the show to keep going but it’s going to only keep going as long as [Jason Sudeikis] feels like it’s a cool thing for him, not only to do creatively and professionally, but personally.”

Acknowledging the three-season plan, he said, “I would say that this story is going to be over next year, regardless—even if the show finds another story to tell and goes on.”

With that in mind, it’s possible for Goldstein to be correct about writing an ending while still leaving the possibility of more Ted Lasso. Still, fans should prepare themselves to say goodbye to AFC Richmond when the curtain closes on the third season.

Think I’d find this news sad if Season 2 wasn’t so bloated and directionless. Now I’m worried that if Season 3 is the last one, the episodes will somehow be even longer! Maybe even throw in a couple extra episodes again that feel superfluous? Who knows!(FWIW – I loved Season 1, and generally like the show. Just wish they’d stuck to tighter episodes and more focus)

Hopefully writing towards the ending will focus them. If Stranger Things (an countless other shows) are any indication they will be able to trim some of the fat and tell the stories theyve been wanting to tell

I think the two extra episodes that were added midstream really messed with the rhythm of the show.By the way; did you watch S1 as it came out, or binge it?

      • unfromcool-av says:

Ooo good question! I binged S1 but watched S2 week to week. That may have had an effect on my experience. BUT! I’m also a strong advocate for keeping shows neatly trimmed (look at the runtimes for S1 eps, all hovering around 30min, whereas S2 pushes upwards of 45min at times!) I think that really helps keep a show, especially a sitcom, focused and lean. Like how Curb Your Enthusiasm episodes started to drag in recent seasons because they weren’t a tight 30.

Yeah, I’d agree that the pacing was definitely wonky.Only episode that needed more than 30m was Beard after hours, haha!Definitely a “bloated middle installment” situation.Hope they tighten it up for the home stretch.

Good.  Most shows should stop at 5-6 tops and almost never do.

I want season 3 to be so good that I want more, but at this point I’m okay with stopping at 3.

This is why I’d love them to end with three. Leave me content, but wanting more. If that’s how they came into it do it, and if the opportunity presents for continuation properly close it and move to it, don’t film an ending and figure out fluff to last another 3-4 seasons longer than it should have ever.

Cute how it’s the same pose as the Tom Cruise article next to it.

On the surface, the premise sounds like a standard sitcom plot that could run for many seasons, but the execution of the second season argues otherwise.  Probably for the best.

Loved the first season. Couldn’t finish the second.

need at least a full season to do justice to Evil Nate

Run for 17 seasons, what do I care. Never understood fan concern for a show going too long. You can stop watching at any time. It’s not like GOT which supposedly was building to a finale. Sudeikis leaves? Wichita State basketball coach Chris Redd comes to take his place. He’s wholesome in a different way and the hijinks that follow.

I think the problem is when the show is kind of wavering in the middle – there are still occasional good moments, but it’s a major step down from where it used to be. Then, I’m spending a season going, “Should I keep watching this show in case they turn it around and improve or should I ditch it?”  See, e.g. Curb Your Enthusiasm and Silicon Valley, both of which I loved in the early seasons.

it’s so funny that under normal circumstances this show would just get to be the fun, low stakes sitcom it should be and run for 9 seasons, but because it was such a covid mega-hit and it’s the streaming era it needs to have all this consideration.people talk about how the 2 extra episodes threw off the rhythm but shows like this used to do 20+ episodes seasons! i hate the future!

  • somethingclever-avclub-av says:

But we need a Season 4 where they play in Champions League!  And then Season 5 when Ted goes to the MLS!

  • synonymous2anonymous-av says:

Ok…I’ll be that guy…Season 2 was fine. Better than fine. I really liked it.

  • MattCastaway-av says:

Reading between the lines: “I would say that this story is going to be over next year, regardless—even if the show finds another story to tell and goes on.” Feels like Ted goes back to America and the show keeps going.
