Apple TV+ trailer drops summer premiere dates and first look at Paul Rudd in The Shrink Next Door

Apple’s preview of this summer’s streaming #content is less of a trailer and more of a self-congratulatory montage of everything on Apple TV+. Offering blink-and-you-won’t-miss-a-damn-thing glimpses at new and returning series accompanied by title cards, this “Summer 2021 & Beyond” trailer feels like something you’d show to executives in a boardroom—like, should we be seeing this? Is Rachel in marketing okay with us watching her presentation for new investors?

Clearly Ted Lasso immediately became Apple TV’s favorite child, as the beloved Jason Sudeikis series received just a smidge more attention than its TV siblings—and maybe rightfully so, considering it’s pretty damn good. The rest of the trailer just runs down the entire Apple TV+ catalogue while teasing new seasons of The Morning Show, See, and Truth Be Told, and giving a first look at Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell in The Shrink Next Door. That series, based on the Wondery podcast of the same name, stars Rudd as a narcissistic psychiatrist who takes on a new patient (Will Ferrell) and turns his life into a living hell. And truly, Paul Rudd playing a dick is long overdue.

Apple is very good at promoting itself as a brand; this summer preview proves that this approach is not very helpful in promoting television and film—there is not a single premiere date, for one thing, and that’s just rude. When does the new season of the Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston power-hour premiere? Dunno, “SUMMER”??? As of now, Apple still hasn’t announced release dates for most of the new content featured in the summer preview, but Physical—starring Rose Byrne as an ’80s housewife who discovers aerobics—debuts on June 18, and Ted Lasso season two premieres on July 23. There’s also CODA, the Sundance award-winner directed by Siân Heder, which debuts in theaters and on Apple TV+ on August 13.

Such a negative nancy. I actually thought the trailer was amazing and a super hype. I don’t need release date, I love the teases and glimpses of new content. Apple TV+ has had incredible originals, and this looks like more of the same.

What’s the consensus on See? I remember people being very intrigued at the original trailer but when it actually came out it seemed like there wasn’t much talk about it.

Its real dumb. Like you really gotta shut off your brain to even start to watch it. If you have ever, in the history of your life, thought “Well that doesn’t make sense” then the show isn’t for you.

It is really rough. At least, that’s how I felt about it. I made it through the whole season, but damn, it felt like I was watching some really bad community theater drama hacks doing some crappy cut-rate Mad Max cosplay. They all chew the scenery like they studied at the Angela Bassett School of Acting. Jason Momoa is the only passable part of this whole show. Well, and the beautiful scenery. I mean, the area this show is filmed in is crazy gorgeous.  But I will not be participating in season 2 at all.

Should I watch Ted Lasso because everyone says I should watch it so much that its kinda flipped that switch in my brain thats like “Nah, It wont be nearly as good as everyone says it is and I will just be disappointed”

I really enjoyed it and would recommend watching because it’s a great feel good show. Watching it just makes me happy. It gave me the same type of feeling as watching The Good Place did. Sometimes you need something positive in your life and Ted Lasso delivers on that front.

Should I watch Ted Lasso because everyone says I should watch it No. You should watch it because you are a human person who enjoys great television. I assume.

Yes, you should. It’s not a genius, ground-breaking comedy by any means, but it is so sweetly charming and good-hearted and you will find yourself incredibly invested in the characters. A lot of people compare it to Schitt’s Creek in that it is equally a fish-out-of-water sitcom that is less concerned with plot than it is about characterization and emotional growth.Anyway, if nothing else, everyone needs Keeley Jones, Independent Woman Insert Sunday Edition, in their lives.

It is a good show. It is very much worth a watch, but there is also a lot of hype so temper your expectations, especially in back half of the season. I feel that it drags a bit leading into the end before rebounding.
So far on Apple TV+ I’ve enjoyed Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Dickinson, Mythic Quest, and some of the documentary stuff.

So far on Apple TV+ I’ve enjoyed Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Dickinson, Mythic Quest I’ve seen Ted Lasso and Mythic Quest, which are both excellent, in my opinion. Haven’t started For All Mankind but I’ve heard good things.  Apple TV doesn’t have much (yet) but so far so good. They have that Springsteen thing, Letter to You, and Wolfwalkers, so… I’ll keep paying my 5.99 or whatever.

I had never heard of Ted Lasso until I started watching the show.  So I went into it with zero expectations, but I will admit that I was absolutely floored with how good it was.  I really appreciated the fact that Sudeikis played the character as a three-dimensional human instead of the goofy, SNL-type character that it could have easily been.  It is solidly written, well acted, and has wonderful bits of humanity and comedy thrown in to every episode.  If you’re constantly hearing good things about this show, it’s because it deserves the praise.

I also feel some of the Tom Hanks Effect where the surly teenager in me wants to rebel against every single person on the fucking internet saying how nice it is by boycotting or naysaying but… It’s a good show and wasn’t nearly as cloying or schmaltzy as I expected. Lasso is just a great character and there’s some life lesson wisdom here about how to be a genuinely good person that you rarely see elsewhere.

look up the old NBC ted lasso promo commercials. if those five minutes don’t grab you then go ahead and skip the series.

It’s more of a paci or binky than an actual piece of human expression, but then again so are most things.

I’m a pretty cynical guy. I like cynical humour and people firing flip one liners as comedy. This show hits none of those boxes. It goes totally the opposite way, resolutely, and is pretty cool for that. It’s not a cutesy comedy either. It’s like someone pitched it as “Major League in England” and then some much friendlier Dan Harmon guy got a hold of it. It’s just so damned amiable that I went with it. You should try it.On the other hand. I totally get that getting overhyped on something is to that thing’s detriment. Good luck.

If you like nice things, you should watch it. It’s very nice.

Ted Lasso is just SUCH a delight. I hemmed and hawed about watching it because I didn’t want another streaming service, but it is worth the 5 bucks a month just to be able to pop on an episode when I’m feeling down. Also I’m married to a Brit who is, of course, a soccer fanatic, so it’s one of the few shows we both love as it allows us to laugh at each other’s dumb traditions and customs.

I am, admittedly, a sucker for a good trailer, but a lot of these look pretty rad. Also, holy famous people. It’s like they wrote a show, then made sure they could land an A-list actor to be in it.Also also, I’m most pumped for the Tom Hanks one (and Ted Lasso, I just hope they don’t screw it up).

Are you guys at AVClub actually going to review and recap it this time? Or ignore it again to focus on more celebrity shaming on Twitter?
