There are loads of Stan Lee cameos yet to be seen

Aux Features Stan Lee

Cameos can be annoying, especially when they exist only to go viral (hi, SNL!). Stan Lee’s routine Marvel cameos, on the other hand, are different, serving not only as a bit of fan service, but also as an homage to the legend who created a universe that still captivates to this day. Lee died yesterday at the age of 95, and while, yes, that means his onscreen appearances will come to an end, rest assured that it won’t come anytime soon.

“I’m not going to tell you what specifically, but Stan always appreciated a good surprise,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Variety yesterday, teasing that some of Lee’s cameos were already in the can.

Of course, that Lee filmed his cameos in batches is no great surprise. “Stan, typically we try to get him out, he doesn’t love to fly, so we try to get him out for his cameos around the same time,” Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo told the BBC in April. “So if we have other movies shooting on the same lot that we’re on, for instance Ant-Man [And The Wasp] or Avengers 4; we group his cameos together and then move him from one set to the next and get him through his cameos in one day.”

If you’re wondering, then, just when you can expect to see Lee’s smiling, sunglass-clad mug, TheWrap reports that he already filmed cameos for both Avengers 4 and Captain Marvel, as well as non-Disney Marvel films like Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Also, he’ll emerge from a throng of Disney princesses and Snow White dwarves this weekend when he blips by in Ralph Breaks The Internet. Sure, that movie’s trailers haven’t done it any favors, but hearing Stan The Man’s voice again would be good for all of us about now.

He seems like the kind of guy that would have had a full scan, voice recording, and signed over rights so they can CGI him into every movie for the next 100 years.

  • coolmanguy-av says:

His cameo in Teen Titans go to the movies was probably the best one. And I say that as a huge Marvel fan.

  • MrTexas-av says:

Nah, his cameos were still annoying.

  • captain-splendid-av says:

As an old-school Marvel Zombie, I have to admit to being a bit verklempt at the way his passing is being mentioned and honoured by pretty much the whole world, instead of just the comics industry and fans.  That’s a true legend.

  • chancellorpuddinghead-av says:

I’m not worried. Even after they run out of new material, there will be no stopping them from making sure he appears in every property in some fashion. Honestly, I wouldn’t even be surprised if he becomes a cartoon mascot ala Colonel Sanders.

    • therealvajayjayleno-av says:

That’s how Stan would’ve wanted it.

Not sarcasm, he would’ve been extremely cool with it.

      • alliterator85-av says:

Oh, I have no doubt. Hell, he put himself into the comics already — Doom threatens him and Kirby back in Fantastic Four #10.

        • nilus-av says:

He and Jack were also not allowed into Reed and Sues Wedding

        • 555-2323-av says:

Doom threatens him and Kirby back in Fantastic Four #10. And he and Jack attended Sue and Reed’s wedding — or tried to.  Didn’t they get tossed by Nick Fury because they didn’t have invitations?

        • jek-av says:

Not to mention that legendary issue of What If where the cosmic rays struck four members of the Marvel Bullpen (including Lee and Kirby).

      • chancellorpuddinghead-av says:

I agree.  That’s why I’m not worried about it.

    • dereader-av says:

I wonder if they’ll go with a photo cameo of him in future MCU movies like they did in the Netflix shows. I think it would too soon for an impersonator right now.

      • chancellorpuddinghead-av says:

That’s a cool way to do it.  Truth is, there is plenty of audio/video of Stan Lee being “Stan Lee” that they could mine for CGI and holograms for years to come.  They’ll never need to hire an impersonator.

      • TomKVideo-av says:

They’ll definitely at least put photos of him someplace. Like he’ll be on the wall of the US embassy in Spiderman Far From Home. I don’t believe he filmed a live action cameo for that one before he passed.

        • nilus-av says:

I kinda like the idea that he would be pictured as President of the USA in the Marvel universe.  Just like one of the pictures in the post office.

      • debeuliou-av says:

they wouldn’t go impersonator, Disney doesn’t need actors to act, be there, or even be alive anymore ^^

    • bros402-av says:

It’d be great if they had photos of him just show up after they run out of tbe filmed cameos.

  • dereader-av says:

Bummer. I was really hoping that he would have filmed his cameo in Spider-Man: Far From Home from the list above just so he could have a final appearance with his famous character. His voice cameo in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse still works though.

  • akaneskiryu-av says:

“created a universe”Co-created a universe along with Kirby and Ditko. Also, I really can’t wait to stop seeing him pop up in every single Marvel film. It was cute once or twice but it got old fast.

    • ghboyette-av says:

      You can fuck right off.

      • akaneskiryu-av says:

No, you can fuck right off. I’m sick of hearing people praise a man all fucking day who stole people’s credit and claimed he was the sole creator from fucking decades and it’s gotten so bad that even character’s Stan admits he didn’t create people are making stupid fucking comics and memes giving him credit for. He is not the single creator of the Marvel universe and he profited off of the backs of artists who died in poverty. You know once in an interview he tried to take credit for something Chris Claremont wrote in the ‘70’s? He’s that kind of person. And so what if I don’t enjoy his cameos? Who cares?

    • nilus-av says:

I think they were fine. Some better then others. I think him yelling out the window in an old Queens neighborhood in Spider-Man: Homecoming was kinda perfect. The Thor:Ragnarok one….not so much

      • 555-2323-av says:

Am I imagining things or did he play Willie Lumpkin the mailman in that first FF movie?

        • nilus-av says:

He did, in the second one he tried to crash the wedding(like in the original comic)He also played a mailman at the end of Civil War

          • mathasahumanities-av says:

Strip club DJ in Deadpool with always be the most Stan “The Man” cameo ever.Over Hef in Iron Man, even.

          • theodorexxfrostxxmca-av says:

Yup. DJ Dirty Stan will always be my favorite because it was unexpected to me that he’d pop up in an R-rated film, let alone in that strip club scene… (I forgot he helped create Stripperella.)

      • sarcastro6-av says:

Jaded Old Bus Driver in Infinity War was pretty good, too.  I also loved his Ant-Man And The Wasp one, although given the more openly comic tone of that sub-franchise there’s more leeway to begin with.

      • paulkinsey-av says:

I think my favorite is still him playing Hugh Hefner in Iron Man.

      • akaneskiryu-av says:

I prefer the ones where he’s just kind of in the background and it’s just a quick moment. I actually really was into the unused original Guardians cameo where he was going to be part of the Collector’s collection before they decided it was “too dark”.

      • soylent-gr33n-av says:

Some came across as really forced (looking at you, Spider-Man 3), others, like Tony Stark calling him “Hef” in Iron Man, were pretty awesome.

    • nunya-biz-av says:

      Stop. Just stop.

  • dremiliolizardo-av says:

It’s a comic book movie. Dead isn’t really dead, right?

    • evansent-av says:

So they could do a series where he is in a block of ice, a cocoon, in pieces on a mad science lab bench, trapped in a time loop, a vast room full of aged clones, petrified, changed into an energy being and seen in dozens of parallel dimensions.

    • brontosaurian-av says:

      Tell that to Peter Parker.

  • hendenburg3-av says:

I remember reading that he was really ticked off about his Deadpool cameo.

Because they didn’t film it on the same set as the rest of that scene.

  • kaingerc-av says:

Too bad we are only going to have the comics book version of this:(The wedding of Luke Cage and Jessica Jones)

  • 555-2323-av says:

They put a poster with Stan’s face on it in a scene from one of the Netflix shows? Daredevil or Jessica Jones maybe? When Hitchcock was still alive, he started putting his walk-ons earlier and earlier into his films. Otherwise, he noted, people wouldn’t pay attention to the plot, they’d be too busy looking for him.In the MCU’s case? They’d better put the new Stan cameos somewhere in non-plot-heavy scenes that can sustain 30 seconds of solid applause. I’m don’t think I’m exaggerating.

  • urambotauro-av says:

I’m not sure of the true extent of Stan’s involvement in the development of these movies, but his cameos always gave me the feeling that he was giving them his official stamp of approval. I don’t know that I’ll get the same feeling from the upcoming cameos, but it will be nice to see his face nonetheless.

  • thepowell2099-av says:

I always appreciated how willing he was to lend his voice to animated projects and video games. Nothing’s cooler than booting up the PS1 Spider-Man and being met with that familiar, “Greetings, True Believers!”
