Pierce Brosnan may not be the best Bond, but he’s, like, the best Bond, if that makes any sense. He certainly appears to be one of the most enjoyable guys outside of the 007 suit, and like any fine wine, seems to have only gotten better with age. It’s with this in mind that we are pleased to report that earlier this week the fifth Bond took a couple hours to sit down in his sun-drenched Hawaiian “pavilion”and watch the entirety of his first outing as 007, 1995’s GoldenEye, courtesy of Esquire UK.

After a few moments of charming befuddlement over the tech setup provided to him by his kids, we then get two very sexy hours of sultry Irish ASMR courtesy of Sir Pierce as he proceeds to give all sorts of behind-the-scenes memories, Hollywood trivia, and answers to fan questions. Just press play below and be instantly lulled by Brosnan’s dulcet brogue as he murmurs “Metro-Goldwyn Mayer…the roaring lion…”

Honestly, there’s just too much to highlight in one post here. Maybe we even blacked out for a few minutes here and there from the Brosnan’s wanton suaveness, a man who—we feel it’s important to add—now somehow looks like the “Good Joe Biden” if the presidential candidate suddenly split into two halves. Also, the screen he’s watching GoldenEye from is slightly to his left, making it look like he’s constantly, wistfully gazing off into the distance.

“I wanted to have my hair like Roger Moore…look at that hair on that fine fellow there,” Brosnan purringly recalls of his childhood idolization with Roger Moore, which culminated in a set visit from the previous Bond. No, look at that hair on you, Sir Pierce. Specifically that salt-and-pepper chest hair.

Was still working at a movie theater when the first teaser trailer for this came out. Walked into the back of the theater showing Waterworld to a packed house, (yes, it was Waterworld) to see the audience react to it. You have to remember it had been 6 years since a Bond movie had been released at this point when there had never been more than 2 years between them in the history of the franchise, so this was a big deal. When he walks into focus with the ‘oo7′ floating behind him, one guy in the theater shouts “Oh, shit, it’s James Bond!!!” Got a huge laugh and then the audience started applauding. I don’t know if it was for what the guy said or for the trailer, but I’ve never forgotten it. Considering what they were about to see, it was probably the highlight of those people’s moviegoing experience that day.

I wouldn’t put it that high, Goldfinger and Dr. No immediately come to mind as being superior IMHO, but its my favorite of the modern-era Bond films.(If you consider 25 years ago to be ‘modern era’. Damn I’m getting old).

Oh this is my activity tonight! SUCH a shame we didn’t get this from Moore.

I like to think of him as the Architect if you get the meme.

Pierce Brosnan may not be the best Bond, but he’s, like, the best Bond, if that makes any sense. He’s my favorite Bond and I honestly can’t put my finger on why, even though he’s not the best Bond. It’s probably a combination of a few things. He was Bond when I was growing up, and all the games I played with his likeness probably had an effect on me.

My parents took me to see Dr. No (1962) when I was six years old and subsequent Bond movies through Diamonds Are Forever (1971). James Bond, having seen all of the movies, has been a constant for most of my life. Picking a favorite Bond actor would be, for me, like picking a favorite child. I’m lucky to have lived so long as to be older than Daniel Craig, the current Bond. I’m practically an age-contemporary of Mr. Brosnan but the comparisons end there. What a ride it’s been.

I feel like Brosnan had a bunch of good qualities from all the other Bonds. He was a jack-of-all-Bonds – he could be suave and charming, cold-hearted and brutal, a little funny, etc. Like, if you ranked the Bonds on the various personality traits, Brosnan wouldn’t come in first for any of them, but he’d be second or third for all of them.

That’s a fair assessment that I can agree with.

I’ve posted this before, so apologies for the repetition, but Brosnan is easily the most “Bond’ Jame Bond of them all. He’s tough like Connery, a bit sensitive like Lazenby, quick with a one-liner like Moore and yet serious like Dalton. He’s the perfect synthesis of all that is Bond, and GoldenEye was the perfect movie to introduce him after a five year break because it also balanced out everything that you want in a bond film without going overboard in any specific area to the point of being distracting.

Hot take:  Everything or Nothing > Goldeneye

It’s neat that he did this (I just rewatched GoldenEye for the first time since seeing it in theaters 25 years ago) but it’d have been nice if they’d given him a lav mike or something.

In-the-moment it was an unparalleled experience. I was running GoldenEye (1995) on the TV, watching YouTube on my tablet as Mr. Brosnan wove something exquisite. I’ll screw-up my little review attempting to cram-in more superlatives so I’ll just leave it at “exquisite”.

I was sitting here thinking of options for how get them both on the same screen, and suddenly realized…I have two TVs. One is Roku! The other has an HDMI input!! I’m going to do this, sqeeeeee!!!

On the big screen it’s like he’s right in the room or, better yet, it felt like I was there in Hawaii. Pretty cool.

Thanks for this. Lol, really liking it so far.

Brilliant!  13 minutes in “I hope this is recording…”

  • maymar-av says:

Pierce Brosnan is an absolute delight, but considering Daniel Craig is pretty great now, imagine how he’ll be once he’s a decade removed from the franchise, having done nothing but whatever quirky, Southern accented roles which please him as he has truckloads of Eon money to live off of. Granted, he’s probably never going to be as enthusiastic to do a commentary like this, if that’s part of your metric of *i*best*/i* Bond. Also, Lazenby, Moore, and Dalton could all be wonderful. It might be a 5-way tie for *i*best*/i* with Connery in tenth.

  • igotlickfootagain-av says:

I’d love a Daniel Craig one of these.“This scene, I hated doing this one. This whole third act is crap. That take’s not bad. Ugh, this part. Christ, I need a drink.”
