Our favorite anthropomorphic animated birds and friendship duo, Tuca & Bertie, will return for more chaotic and delightful adventures together. Adult Swim orders a third season of the Lisa Hanawalt series. Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong will return as the toucan and the song thrush who are trying to get their lives together as things continuously fall apart in the bustling metropolis of Bird Town. Other members of the voice cast include: Nicole Byer (Nailed It!), Richard E. Grant, Reggie Watts, and Pamela Adlon.

Throughout the currently airing second season, Tuca (Haddish) and Bertie (Wong) have taken on handling the ghosts of their past and present. Bertie’s been busy excavating her inner ghouls with the help of a therapist, while Tuca prefers to stuff hers behind the toilet. Meanwhile, the beloved architect Speckle (Steven Yeun) is building a new house that drives him to the brink of insanity. As the second season finale airs Sunday, August 15, we look forward to more shenanigans while exploring female friendships, trauma, and the healing power of baking.

Tuca & Bertie received a second shot at life when Adult Swim swooped in to save the animated series after Netflix cancelled it after its first season. As one of the few women-centric adult animated series—with a similar air to the kookiness of Broad City—fans decried the sudden cancellation. But even before the show was picked up by Adult Swim, Haddish told The A.V. Club that she was confident the show would find a new home. “We’re amazing—Ali and I are amazing,” she explained. “You would be a complete idiot not to want to work with both of us, not to have us somewhere. And, apparently, Adult Swim could afford us and they’re not dumb. They’re quite intelligent over there at Adult Swim, and they picked us up immediately.”

Wonderful news! I don’t think this second season is as strong as the first, but it’s still enjoyable television.

This is great news! The second season has been really good so far: a playful animation style, a lot of heart (without devolving into treacly sentiment), some killer jokes, and just enough worldbuilding to make this “birds and plants as people” world feel like its own universe with its own weird holidays and tourist traps and customs. Considering how UGLY most modern American animation shows are (not everything has to look like “Bob’s Burgers,” people), it’s just so nice to have a show that makes an effort to be visually appealing & interesting.Maybe we can get some recaps going for season 3. 🙂

I’ve really been enjoying the more high concept episodes, like Tuca walking around alone at night. The whole design aesthetic reminds me of a children’s book and that episode in particular was like Harold and the Purple Crayon.

That was the episode that convinced me to give it another shot since I didn’t get into it when it was on Netflix. I went back and watched season one, which I should’ve watched it further than giving up on it. Now, I love it and look forward to it more than Rick and Morty on Sundays.

Someone in the Rick & Morty thread was talking up how good S2 was, and I’m so glad I listened. I liked but didn’t love season 1, but they’ve really found their footing in season 2. Genuinely hilarious and really moving. And as others have mentioned, the animation is gorgeous.

I read those comments too and gave it another shot after not getting into it when season 1 came out. I ended up watching what was already aired on Adult Swim, then went back to Netflix to watch the first season. Made me a fan.

Netflix canned the show barely after it aired; Adult Swim renews it before it’s even done. That is a night-and-day difference in how to handle a show like this, wow.

Netflix cancelling shows with female leads/producers after the first season is PURE COINCIDENCE. They will tell you their AI is totally neutral, just like the facial recognition one.

I am very here for Haddish’s shade towards Netflix.

Hey, what if y’all gave it weekly coverage?

Just frickin’ great to hear about another show renewed that’s stuck in the streaming cracks between countries. Season 1 is on Netflix but no sign of season 2 on the joint venture Corus/Adult Swim we have here in Canada.
