The Lost City actor is happy with keeping the glasses and scar in retirement for now

He may be ready to throw on a permed wig and a classic 1980s mustache for the Weird Al biopic, but Daniel Radcliffe isn’t going to re-apply that lightning bolt scar or reprise his role as The Boy Who Lived in the near future.

While discussing his upcoming rom-com adventure flick The Lost City with co-stars Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock, Radcliffe tells The New York Times that returning to the Wizarding World isn’t something in the cards for him at the moment.

“This isn’t the answer that anybody’s going to want, but I think I was so able to go back and enjoy it because it’s not a part of my day-to-day life anymore,” says Radcliffe. “I’m getting to a point where I feel like I made it out of ‘Potter’ OK and I’m really happy with where I am now, and to go back would be such a massive change to my life.”

Yet, the Miracle Workers star does leave the option to come back as Harry Potter open-ended—give or take a few decades.

“I’m never going to say never, but the Star Wars guys had like 30, 40 years before they went back,” Radcliffe explains. “For me, it’s only been 10. It’s not something I’m really interested in doing right now.”

His answer was in response to director Chris Columbus mentioning to Variety that he’d like to bring the original trio of Rupert Grint, Emma Watson and Radcliffe back for a Harry Potter And The Cursed Child adaption. The three actors made a semi-return to the magical boarding school with HBO Max’s Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts earlier this year.

Though we might not be getting a Cursed Child film anytime soon, maybe Radcliffe wants to continue his streak of playing villains like his eccentric billionaire from The Lost City. With his former Swiss Army Knife costar Paul Dano transforming into the terrifying Riddler in The Batman, perhaps Radcliffe could pop into Gotham as one of the Dark Knight’s many foes. Nicolas Cage has dibs on Egghead, though!

Maybe in another 10 years and without She Who Must Not Be Named anywhere near it.

    • scottsummers76-av says:

How do you tell someone theyre not allowed anywhere near the thing they created? Unless they gave her some astronomical paycheck to go away.

  • ryanlohner-av says:

And I’m sure this has absolutely nothing to do with his wanting to stay as far the hell away from now uncloseted transphobe JK Rowling as humanly possible.

    • ohnoray-av says:

lol exactly, love Emma Watson’s shade towards Rowling at the BAFTA’s.

      • milligna000-av says:

Hell, she even liked a few of my INCREDIBLY obscure tweets mocking Graham Linehan right before he got kicked off twitter for being a huge transphobe. The kids are alright!

and the fact that he probably has a hefty royalty check every month from the licensing of his likeness, or at least I would fucking hope so.Once that dries up, I see him donning the glasses once again. his career has hit a very good stride outside of the HP universe and he has been able to do some pretty fun things which is really the best anyone could wish him.

    • abrassea-av says:

I read this article specifically to see if he said that.

    • themanfrompluto-av says:

For sure. Not to mention the way JKR’s transphobia has spilled over into a broader picking over of her constant interjections into the mythos/franchise. In hindsight, maybe insisting that a black portrayal of Hermione being totally sanctioned by the canon you built up doesn’t fit altogether well with the fact that that same character spent the better part of 3 books being ridiculed for thinking slavery was bad, huh Jo?

      • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I insist to people that I’ve always hated J.K. Rowling. Although I guess it’s popular these days. She has so many sins to her name.

For starters WTF is with her retroactively declaring Dumbledore is gay?? Let’s bury all our gays and furthermore there was no evidence of this in the book so was she just trying to win PC point? Second to my beef about that is absolutely her insisting that Hermoine could have always been interpreted as Black. Yah, okay. Based on what? The fact that she (thankfully in her mind) only described Hermoine as having curly hair without describing her skin tone.

Come the fuck on J.K. Rowling. I’d love to hold a match up against her just to see if she is totally made of paper or not, I’d love to know.

      • npr-pledge-drive1-av says:

Also theirs a whole passage in the 4th book about how she goes to the Wizard Dance and gets her hair straightened for it… Which yeah you really thought this one out JK

      • banezy451-av says:

jk’s literally bile, fuck her. no justifications necessary

    • tormentedthoughts3rd-av says:

At this point, they’re probably more likely to do a reboot as a 7 season HBOMAX series than they are to do Cursed Child. So that’s probably a reason too.

    • geralyn-av says:

I was thinking it’s because he read the Cursed Child’s script.

    • cosmicghostrider-av says:

I think it also probably has to do with him wanting to do other things as an actor. I mean yes to what you just said but I really don’t think that’s his primary reason. Radcliffe really doesn’t seem like someone sitting by a phone waiting for the Harry Potter people to call.

    • scottsummers76-av says:

Probably not. The path he chose for acting, he’s been doing it way before Rowling started with her bullshit. It probably doesnt make him any more eager to go back, but its not the main reason, most likely.

  • Meander061-av says:

He did seven movies with the character – leave him alone about it.

  • iambrett-av says:

He made something like $50 million from these movies, plus whatever royalties he negotiated, so it could be definitely be a while. Maybe ten years from now if he’s had to go through an expensive divorce or two. And of course Rowling hasn’t really covered herself in glory lately. People might not care if the next movie does really well and onward, but in the mean-time the main cast probably want to steer clear.

    • lilnapoleon24-av says:

You have no reason to think the need for money is the only thing that could make him play the role again.

      • iambrett-av says:

I can’t imagine him coming back for an adaptation of The Cursed Child for any reason other than needing money. For anything else, it would have to be something really different.

      • scottsummers76-av says:

what other reason could there be?

  • bupropionxl-av says:

I never thought the kid who got to play Harry Potter would turn out to be so fucking cool.

    • danposluns-av says:

We got to see him playing the lead on Broadway in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. In a meta-way, it was just kind of neat to see him getting on with his life and being good at stuff that wasn’t HP. I don’t think he’s quite the next Neil Patrick Harris but he held his own on that stage with literally some of the best ensemble singers and dancers in the world. I hope he has as wonderfully diverse a career as he both clearly wants and has earned.

    • drpumernickelesq-av says:

Yeah, he’s just so genuinely goddamn delightful in ever interview I see of him. Glad he conquered his demons early and has emerged a happy and healthy person, and somehow managed to maintain a sense of being down to Earth despite playing the most famous character in modern fiction history.

    • coatituesday-av says:

He’s done a lot since the Potter movies, and he’s always good. But he knocked me out with 2016’s Imperium. An incredible job of acting – plus the script was so much more nuanced than I’d expected from a “FBI agent goes undercover in a neo-Nazi gang” movie.  [Not that they did a “good people on both sides” thing – but it was a smart script with not-cartoonish characters.]

    • better-than-working-av says:

      It’s a….strange… mini-series, but he’s great in A Young Doctor’s Notebook opposite Jon Hamm.

    • doclawyer-av says:

I remember reading Chris Columbus auditioned actors in part by looking at their home lives. It’s why all three of them were able to avoid falling into the child star trap.

  • carrercrytharis-av says:

I’ll tell you what, I’d watch a ‘Potter and Malfoy’ show where they team up as private detectives to solve magical murder mysteries (with Granger as the Minister for Security who fired Potter under ambiguous circumstances). Also, keep Rowling and Yates as far away from it as possible…

  • bigburit0-av says:

I’m glad radcliffe managed to get away from being typecast and has moved on to doing the kind of weird shit nick cage dreams about.

  • genejacket-av says:

I love that we have actors like Radcliffe that used their big breaks/early successes in world-dominating IP as a springboard to pursue the smaller and/or weirder projects they’re actually passionate about. Even if he never did anything I ever enjoyed again, at least he’s doing what he actually wants to do instead of going back to the well and chasing those big paydays, and I have nothing but respect for him for it.

    • JohnCon-av says:

Seconded! I’ve seen a lot of his post-Potter product, not loved much, and still think he’s the best.

  • kencerveny-av says:

Yeah, not everyone wants to be like Vin Diesel and sleepwalk their way through ten movies playing the exact same character the exact same way.

  • adam-802-av says:

    Hogwarts Legacy looks amazing thankfully.

  • thecoffeegotburnt-av says:

I’m still on the “let Daniel Radcliffe play Wolverine” train. He could do it. I know he could.

  • garland137-av says:

I’m OK with him refusing to return for the boy wizard equivalent of the Star Wars Christmas Special.  The Cursed Child is like bad fanfiction, and no good would come from making it into a movie.

  • skoc211-av says:

The only thing Cursed Child really has going for it* is seeing the brilliant staging and production design/effects live on stage. Replace that with your standard movie CGI and then you’ll have more time for the audience to focus on the absolutely horrid plot. There is absolutely no reason to make it into a film.*Though I vaguely remember a really touching scene between Harry and his son at the very end of the second part.

  • cosmicghostrider-av says:

    Yes to all of this.

  • anthonypirtle-av says:

To be honest, while he was fine in the role, the movies are a mixed bag. The books are much better, and they’re now problematic, so I don’t think most people are ready to dive in again.

  • scottsummers76-av says:

Yeah, i like that if you look at everything hes done post Harry Potter, you can tell he definitely didnt do it for a paycheck or prestige/more fame.

  • luke512-av says:

Given what happened to Katherine Waterson, would jk even let him back? She’s revealed just how petty and retalitory she really is
