Bernie Sanders, one of the more clear-headed politicians currently campaigning for the American presidency, must have a hard time being interviewed by his mirror image. And yet, despite the psychological turmoil that must surely accompany sitting a few feet away from someone refusing to break character as they impersonate you, Sanders acquits himself very well in a surreal chat with the alternate reality version of him played by comedian James Adomian.

The two Bernies, dressed in matching outfits, enjoy a conversation that ranges from Sanders’ views on economic inequality, universal health care, and climate change to the intricacies of acting and looking like the Vermont senator. The real Sanders provides excellent advice for anyone hoping to walk around cosplaying the politician. “Oh, good. Long socks,” he notes at the beginning, monitoring his mirror image. “Very good.”

Adomian-Bernie asks if ordering a suit in “a size rumpled” is appropriate, and original-Bernie explains the importance of sitting down in the suit to get it properly wrinkled. We also receive notes on how to gesture like Sanders, extending and waving the arms around in order not just to underscore a message, but to get a little extra exercise in, too.

At times the clone Bernies talk over one another, identical voices blending until the line between subject and artist blurs into an indistinguishable whole. Throughout this strange scene, Sanders laughs along and basically just shows how game he is to do whatever he needs to do in order to reach voters. If, as in the past, that means that a 78-year-old man needs to start a podcast or get a Twitch channel off the ground, so be it. If it now requires him to risk annihilating the boundaries between his inner self and the surrounding world by staring into the face of his doppelgänger, well, apparently he’ll do that, too.

Bernie’s probably my #1 choice for the nomination, but I think we need to prepare ourselves for the idea that he may lose because voters actually prefer someone else. I keep reading people warning that the Dems will lose if they nominate someone other than their preferred candidate. What I find interesting is that they always say “If the Dems nominate..,” not “If the voters vote for…” I think some people subconsciously assume that there’s no way their candidate could possibly lose a “fair” election.

My simple solution to anybody who is on the fence about voting for Bernie/Warren/Biden/etc: keep repeating “Supreme Court” over and over until they recant in agony and promise to vote Democrat.

Yeah, if Bernie loses I think it will partially be due to unfair media coverage, but the actual numbers I think will be mostly accurate to what voters want. While shady stuff can happen the votes are too decentralized for true fraud in most places. In 2016 the scale was definitely tipped for Hillary, but she still likely would’ve won on name recognition alone. So she stole nothing, just used her clout and years of experience with the party to her advantage….then blew the general in epic fashion.

Right now, with no candidate polling higher than 25% in the aggregate, it means that at least 75% of Democrats are going to be disappointed that their candidate did not win the nomination. I think preparing that 75% for that eventuality is a good thing.

Not understanding how democracy works is a key characteristic of extreme leftwing voters. “I want it so how can everyone else not want it,” basically.

This is hysterical. I am not supporting Bernie, but he’s clearly game for a laugh and deserves a lot of credit for being able to laugh at himself.

I hope whoever the nominee is this time – if it isn’t Bernie – picks Bernie as VP, because forget policy, to win this time around Democrats need someone with a die-hard fanbase on the ticket.

A lot is made in the media of Bernie being very “always serious”, but it always has seemed to me that quite to the contrary he’s maybe the only candidate with a good sense of humor.

G/O Media gives Bernie so much free time I expect them to show up on his campaign finance reporting as a full-on donor.
