Nope, we don’t know much about Jordan Peele’s third feature, Nope. We know that it has a very bold and negative title, calling dibs on one of the English language’s most magnificent words. It is, after all, part of “littlest nope ever,” a viral photo of a singular paw print in a blanket of fresh snow. We must assume that the film isn’t an adaptation of the picture, but one can hope.

But what we do know about Nope is that principal photography is complete, and some of it was shot in IMAX. Per Variety, cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot the movie on Kodak film, capturing some of it on 65mm for IMAX. Hoytema is best known for Christopher Nolan’s films Tenet, Interstellar, and Dunkirk, which earned him an Oscar nomination. Next, he’ll be rejoining his longtime collaborator Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer. So it sounds like that ominous cloud from the poster will be big as heck.

Nope reunites Peele with Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya, who went on to shoot that terrifying scene in Widows and win an Oscar for Judas And The Black Messiah. The rest of the announced cast includes Emmy-winner Keke Palmer and Oscar-nominee Steven Yeun.

One of Hollywood’s most popular Oscar winners, Peele has been quite successful at keeping a lid on his movies. Thanks to provocative titles like Get Out and Us, which tell you nothing about the plot, Peele’s been one of the few directors making original genre movies that people turn out in droves for. It doesn’t hurt that both his previous works were also really, really friggin’ good.

Yeah, we don’t know that much about Nope. But can you blame us for being excited that Jordan Peele is shooting a movie for IMAX? Nope.

Nope is scheduled to hit theaters on July 22, 2022.

Is it the feature-length expansion of the Geico ad where the new African-American homeowner discovers that his attic is full of creepy dolls and puppets, and he says “nope, no thank you” as he walks out?

    • pocrow-av says:

I think it’s safe to assume that Geico plows 100% of their profits into their advertising, which is a bold choice. Good for the public, but bold.

Which comes from Eddie Murphy’s joke about the black man buying the Amityville horror house.

      • yawantpancakes-av says:

Which comes from a skit from a Richard Pryor record. He was talking about the Amityville Horror or the Exorcist. I forget which one. Anyway, the joke is Black people in a movie enter a haunted house and hear someone or something say “hello”. The Black family say “goodbye” and that’s the end of the movie.

    • hootiehoo2-av says:

I’m sure that will be the premise. The main character will be too smart to get caught in this horror movie while his friends and family are too dumb to see whats about to happen.

Look, far be it for me to bemoan losing filmmakers to gadgetry, I really hope we don’t lose Jordan Peele to futzing and technical experimentation.

    • dr-darke-av says:

What? You don’t want Peele’s next movie in 8K at 120 frames/second, with 2.76:1 Ultra Panavision 7o aspect ratio so it looks like a Very Long Soap Opera?Kind of like Ang Lee did with Gemini Man….

If anyone could go Full Zemeckis and survive, it’s him.

      • frankwalkerbarr-av says:

He could do a “Welcome to Marwen” style movie only where the dolls are of the members of the 761st Tank Battalion (“Patton’s Panthers”).

  • labbla-av says:

Awesome, loved his first two movies and can’t wait for this.

  • thomasjsfld-av says:

but when nolan does this kinda stuff its self indulgent bullshit? okay!

  • ohnoray-av says:

    also barbie ferreira!

  • anathanoffillions-av says:

I mean…most people on the internets know what “nope” means…actually the GEICO commercial with the Cabin in the Woods attic uses it correctly…in the recent “Candyman” there’s a great nope where the female lead opens a door, looks down into a dark basement and goes “nope!”A Nope is an invitation to do or look at something that you REALLY do not want to.  Click on this link to find out what goat.se was!  Watch a “Fear Factor” bug eating contest!  Nope.So I would maybe think this storm is a Stephen King The Mist type storm with things you really don’t want to encounter?

    • mifrochi-av says:

Candyman also had maybe the meanest smash cut in recent memory, where it goes directly from the Back protagonists wondering who would intentionally do the Candyman-mirror thing to a white high schooler walking into the bathroom. That movie rules.

      Yep.

  • moggett-av says:

At first, no lie, I read this headline as “Jordan Peterson” and was filled with a kind of fascinated horror. I blame that Succession review for reminding me he exists.

  • refinedbean-av says:

I’m excited for this despite how disappointing Us was. You’ve still got me, Jordan Peele! Just…just wanted you to know.

    • mifrochi-av says:

I love my horror movies overstuffed and borderline incoherent. Us was the bomb (and it was even visually stylish).

      • refinedbean-av says:

Hey, more power to you. I can see people absolutely enjoying it, and it had some elements that I liked, but overall the whole thing wasn’t for me.

        • callmeshoebox-av says:

There was so much that I liked about it it makes the letdown of the explanation even more disappointing

      • rowan5215-av says:

hell yeah. give me all the big-swing, inconsistent, passion-project horror movies anyday. I’ll take them all over another mediocre reboot or shitty Slenderman movie

  • putusernamehere-av says:

But did he survive getting attacked by that giant assassin nun? Way to bury the lede, guys.

  • dirtside-av says:

I think the titles of Peele’s films will eventually form a weird, terse conversation. So far, it’s:“Get out!”“Us?”“Nope.”

    • igotlickfootagain-av says:

“Jordan Peele has revealed the title of his next film, ‘Then Why Were You Looking in Our Direction When You Said Get Out? That’s Really Confusing, Man. We Were Totally Freaking Out Over Here’.”
